Swedish Mauser Bolt Problem
« on: November 20, 2021, 06:02:53 AM »
I have a sporterized Carl Gustov Swedish Mauser dated 1905 that was given to me by a friend. I thought this would be the perfect rifle for my annual Missouri deer hunts. I mounted a 3x9 Leupold scope and took it to the range and it shot pretty good out to 300 yards. I have put about 60 rounds of 140 gr ammo through it with no problems. I took it on my hunt this year and dropped a deer with one shot. Unfortunately when I went to cycle my bolt, I could not engage the bolt forward. I think the firing pin may be locked forward as the rounded piece on the back of the bolt is pushed forward. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I really hope to get the rifle back in service as it did a great job on the deer. The picture shows the condition of the bolt which is as far forward as it will go. Thank you.

If you remove the bolt you should be able to push the sear back and turn it into the locked back position.

I completely disassembled the bolt, cleaned and reassembled and everything looked good but I can not engage the safety. It will only stay in fire position. If I unscrew the bolt sleeve one full revolution the safety will work but the bolt assembly is real sloppy and feels like it needs the additional turn to seat right. It looks like I have a small crack on the bolt sleeve. You can see the crack in the pictures. I found a new one on Numrich for $16 so I am going to try this. Will also replace the safety for $10. Can anyone verify what action this is? I thought it was a 98 but my cocking piece does not have the tail on it. I can not find a schematic that shows my piece. Thanks

On the pre 98 Mausers they are cock on close, meaning when you are pushing the bolt forward the sear which you see on the far left center of you lower picture should engage the trigger sear about the last  inch of closing the bolt before you turn it downward. I am thinking the trigger is the issue and is not catching the sear as you cycle the actioin.

A Carl Gustav would be a 94 or 96  Mauser, made whenever they were before WW2. The action is basically the same, even the later Husqavarna made during the war, it's a 94/96 action.

The cracked bolt sleeve may be the issue, without seeing it up close its hard to say. Maybe someone futzed with the sear engagement and it's shallow and with the bad bolt sleeve is acting in combo to not reset the sear properly.

You may be able to get the firing pin assy with bolt shroud and everything attached. Then insert the complete unit in and have a few spare parts when done.

Whatever happens let us know what you did and how it works out.
Hold still while I overthink this.

Thank you for the responses. I did more cleaning and worked the action repeatedly in the rifle. Safety was still not engaging then it worked. Think it just needed some TLC. I ordered a new bolt sleeve and safety and think this will take care of the problem. I will give an update after I get out to range. Thank you.
