bad experience hog hunting have a confession
« on: March 09, 2004, 02:48:57 AM »
Last  night  me  and  my 8 yr  old  daughter  jasmine  went  on  a  quick  hunt  at  the  lease.   i  have  some holes  baited  up  with  sweet  feed  and   the  pigs  are  everywhere  i  knew  id  see  a  pig.  without  thinking  i  grabbed  my  270  instead  of my  trusty  old   NEF 45-70   which  i  have  become   dependant  on    my  load  was  150 gr  nosler  partitions.   i  have  been  hunting   this  one  big  boar  i  never  have  seen  him   but seen  his  track   he  was  impressive  at  about 800 pm   i  heard  a  light  grunt  and  i  turned  on  my  nightblaster light  and  seen  him   he  was  slightly  angling  away   so  i  rushed  the  shot   and placed   the  crosshairs behind  his  shoulders   and  squeezed  the  trigger.   he  dropped  in  his  tracks.  silly  me  i  was  celebrating  waking  jasmine  up  in  the  stand  and  said   daddy  shot  a  pig!   as  i  did  this  he   started  movig      i  cycled  the  bolt  on  my  gun  knocked  my  cord  loose  from  my  light   and  i  watched  him  run in  circles  in  front  of  me  and take  off.  we  started  to  track  him   i  fiound  good  fresh  lung  blood   real   foamy   it  was  everywhere      to  end  the  story  i  tracked  and  looked   til  2  am   i  finally  lost  the blood  trail  and admitted  defeat.  i honestly  believe  if  i  had  the  45-70   i  would  have recovered  my pig   ive  tried  every caliber  imaginable on  pigs  some  i am  not  proud  to  admit,  sometimes  even being  a  little  cocky  while  doing  so   I  have  killed  many  pigs  more  than  i  care  to  even  share   but  in  the  last  year  i have lost  2  pigs  due  to  rushed  shots  not  following through  and  a  sort  of  cockiness, forgetting  that  pigs  are  super  tough  animals  i believe  i  have  learned  my  lesson  on  lesser  calibers   for  pigs    they  work    just  not  for  me   i  am  goijg  to stick  to  my  45-70  as  i  have  a  lot  of  trust  in  her.  thanks   for  all  of  the  advice  you  fine  gentleman  have  given  me   it  was  all  well  taken     good  hunting

Sounds like you busted him pretty good but sometimes they get up and run off.  I have had it happen with deer and hogs.  I prefer the 45-70 also but that 270 killed him.  I just hope you can find that old man and at least save the head if the rest spoils.

Howie,

A 270 bullet behind the shoulder is quite lethal, even if the kill isn't instantaneous. I would bet my favorite pair of jeans that he is lying within 50 yards of where you lost the blood trail. On a good lung hit like that, when the heavy bleeding stops they are nearly finished. I have found several deer that way.  Even if it is too late for a full mount, you could at least maybe do a European skull mount with the impressive tusks.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.
