A bit of history...esp for horse men
« on: December 05, 2021, 12:29:41 PM »
.
My Grandpa...about 1880s through early 1900s.  Gramp raced on the hig wheel sulkies, low steel tired wheel sulkies and on into the low rubber wheeled sulkies as the Photo shows...

They used to race extremely light 4 wheel rigs back then too !

Never rode a buggy like that. Set on the seat with my grandpa behind his team of horses. He called'em "Slim and Shorty". A matched set of bays.

My ride until I turned 21 was a saddle on one of Bunker Hunts' Charolias ranches.
About that time I got a little smarter and went back to college.

Watched them trot and pace at DuQuoin Illinois many times.    Home of the Hambletonian.
I even owned a big pacer mare, not for pulling a sulky but to ride.
She would shake your teeth loose if you let her pace, so I made her stay at a walk when I rode her.

A good cow horse with an easy short lope was like finding gold.  If a horse was choppy and rough, he'd wear you both out.

This area wasn't as built up back
when,  and it wasn't annexed until the
later part of the 50's.  Used to be
lots of pasture and stables around.
An uncle had one place just a few
blocks down that was easy bicycle
riding to get to.  He had a nice saddle
mule that I used to ride around and
shoot wabbits off off. He also had a
vile appaloosa stud that was a bad
cribber and the durn thing would catch
me with my back turned if I was
close enough to  reach, and it would
clamp down on the top of my shoulder
and neck and I'd swear it would laugh
about it. There was also a cute
girl older than me ( probably 16 or 17)
that had a nice bay and would ride
for a very long time. I was pretty naive
about why she would ride so much
and return all red faced.
I wouldn't want the expense and trouble
of any equines this day and age.
Decent riding or work stock needs to be
worked with every day and groomed
and you have to nearly beg to find a
proper farrier much less to get one
to come out.  A good many will muck
up your riding stock's feet, then it'll
cost 2 fortunes to find someone to
straighten it out God forbid if it needs
corrective shoeing to straighten the
mess out.  I guess one could do like
the border jumpers here do, and let
them eat weeds and carry about a
belly full of worms and let them
get all fence cut. Pretty much like
they treat their canines. Keep em
till they drop and go find another
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Yes, that's Grandpa Billy!  After his racing days, he purchased 3-4 farms and did some dairying, although his main thrust was as a horse  trainer/shipper& dealer.  I regret that I never met him, since he died before I was born.
..A pleasant natiured man, he did  leave many "happy tracks" behind ..and a supply of very interesting life events to be related.  Grandma, from what I understand, was a bit more of a severe .

A good point...  I could modify or reshape a shoe and affix it to the hoof or if need be, make a shoe.  ...But I have never studied the physiology of the horse .   Since a horse may well at times, spend 24/7 on it's feet, and in work place great stress on their hooves, an ill fitting shoe can do real damage...Therefore, I never ventured into the farrier's field....I've been happy enough with the rest of blacksmithing..

My history with horses ended as a teenager on the farm.  I did some riding on a neighbor lad's old nag but that's about all th eriding I did.  Most of my experience was with draft horses..weighing up there near a ton each.
However, that was my teenage years..which all too soon passed..

We do have a few well qualified farriers around here..and they can command a good fee.  Many horsemen use the Amish farriers.  Hopefully, the information passed down through the years is solid.

Below, the only other photo I have of Gramps with horses, is this one, where he set a new world's record with this 4 wheel racing rig.  ..And on a "kite shaped" track... Whew! ..those corners must have added a bit of excitement !

I trimmed a lot of feet to set a horse up, and put a few shoes back on that were lost in my pens.
I've also had horses that had to be "fore-footed" and shod laying on the ground.
Shoeing every horse that came down the road wasn't something that interested me. The job full time, could be hazardous.

Not only the unruly horses, which can do real damage, but i can feature the pain from a shy horse, as he quickly pulls his hoof away..BEFORE you have crimped and twisted off the nail ends..  OUCH!

That I've had happen, but it snagged an old pair of chaps I was wearing.
Most folks have never seen what your talkin about, but those are some of the nastier hazards of shoeing horses.

Are you implying that a Buick is smoother than a Mustang? ..Or a Camry easier riding than a Bronco?  ;) ;)  ;D ;D

I really love horses.     I’ve ridden them from a little boy and owned a bunch from my teen years but now I have to go to north Georgia to a stable and trail ride.
Nancy will pet one but won’t ride.:)

It was near the last time I ever rode a horse, and I was on my neighbor's old nag.  He and my brother had nice horses .  His was a tall bay..rather flighty though, my brother had a beautiful pinto..great little horse, not more than 14-15 hands.
We got to fooling around and they tried to rope me..  Well, I don't know if that old nag held her breath when I saddled her ..or I just didn't cinch her down well...but I ended up riding under that horse for about 80 yards ..before I hit the mud...

LOL, I've had horses hold their breath when saddling up. Just before I strapped off at the D-ring I knee'em in the belly. Then I'd cinch up.
We seldom roped calves, but sometimes ornery momma cows, or a bull that had got into the wrong pasture. That usually ended up a double roping with 2 ponies dragging him through the closest gate.
A loose cinch was a guaranteed pasture wreck.

The relative that had pasture and stables
had a jenny for a few months that I rode a
good bit. Once I guess I rode it too long
because all of a sudden it decided not
to respond to any knees or reining and
trotted to a large tree in the middle of the
pasture with low hanging limbs
and more or less swept me off
her back and trotted back up to the
stalls without me on top. After that, whenever
it started toward that tree I knew to
slide off and walk her back up to the
stall
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Old farmer Jones was hauling a load of wood down the road one day, with his old mule. Soon the mule  refused to go a step further. Try what he may..that old mule flat refused to budge !  As he was trying to urge his mule along ,    his neighbor Harris, stopped in his Model A.

Harris asks.."what's the matter, won't your mule move for you"?  Jones replies..'He sure won't"!

Harris:.. "So why don't you just build a fire under his belly"?

Jones:...  "Won't work...I tried that last week...and he only stepped far enough ahead, to burn the wagon up"!
