Your choice of a real.."down and out" survival knife..
« on: December 09, 2021, 03:22:43 AM »
.
I am not referring to camping, bushcraft or recreation..but say your piper cub has crashed or you are lost somehow, in a deserted area..  Dare I say "Naked and Afraid" situation?

In such aa case, which would you choose?  I

I would go for an Ontario Air Force survival knife..  Not just because Bob, the guy who runs Ontario is a friend and fellow elder at my church. but because the AF survival is one of the toughest, most capable ones around.
...Plus, Ontario has a wealtof experience, building for the military..

   Here's the Air force survival knife;

  https://www.knifecenter.com/item/ON499/ontario-499-air-force-survival-knife-sawback-blade-with-false-top-edge-and-blood-grooves-natural-leather-handle-and-sheath

  My suggestion...what's yours?

I already have one.

Besides my ever present pocket knife, I'd choose my stainless Remington bird and fish knife, and my 18" machete.

I've got a Benchmade 710 that would do anything I needed to do.

Gave mine to my daughter and haven't gotten another one.  It came with a south paw sheath and she is a south paw. I'll get another some day.

Fair price for a good piece of steel. In one of my packs I have a Ontario spec raider.

It comes with a stone to sharpen it, which could prove handy.  I suspect I have mentioned this before, but Ontario save my grandson a pretty good sum during his first combat deployment in Iraq.
As they got ready to leave the "sandbox", My grandson being the armorer..was responsible for all weapons.

Seems all the firearms were accounted for...but there were 5 bayonets missing.  Who knows what happened to them/  They could have gotten lost at any time..kicking in house doors, rapelling down from a chopper or even could have been blown away i an IED attack.

...But rules are rules..and if he couldn'r round up the 5 bayonets..he had to buy them!  So my grandson calls (sat phone) and asks if Bob can supply enough stray parts to look like 5 Ontario M9 bayonets (valued at $109 @)
I spoke to Bob about it...and shortly, 5 new Ontario bayonets showed up at his forward operating base in Iraq..

At that time, and I suppose it still hold true..for edged weapons, the Marines used only Ontario.

When my grandson was home just before that deployment, Bob showed me, my son and  him through the Ontario plant.  They were just about to introduce the ASEK survival knife, aimed especially at Chopper pilots' but no deliveries had been made yet.

When the tour was over, Bob presented him with an ASEK (Aircraft Survival and Escape Knife). That made my
grandson, the first ever warrior to carry that knife into combat !

Some years back there was a
program called Knife for a soldier
that was a deal with Cold Steel that
sent personal knives to service members
in the middle east and other areas
overseas. I used to frequently donate
to it,  but I haven't heard anything about
it for a while

I have some run of the mill hunting
type knives that work pretty well
for what I do.  I also use my knives
for knife jobs and use saws, axes,
hatchets and chainsaws for cutting
up wood and cutting limbs.
I've never been a fan of trying to
split logs by " batoning"
I know it's the big fad , but I can
get that chore done quicker and
easier with the tools designed for
it. I used to have a pilot knife, but
it's become MIA over the years.
I still have an Ontario made
marine combat knife. I wouldn't
feel nekkid with that on my belt.

Most of my expensive knives I
bought in years past, the Randalls
and such went to other people
that stacked the bills high enough.

I have both, except my M9 is made by Buck Knives, the other is an Ontario version.  Not a fan of the M9, I prefer a smaller one, like the old pilot survival knife you linked to.  But for survival, I would probably opt for a multitool, just way more useful.

JMHO-  personally never really cared
for any multi tools
I had one of the first Leatherman tools
in this area, and never saw all that much
use for it.  Way back when I had a friend
that was a wholesaler for such toys and
similar items, and he was always getting
all kinds of new goodies at SHOT shows
and trade shows, etc.
My hunting buddy had a Gerber whatever
their Leatherman thing was, and he never
used it all that much either.

I just prefer a decent knife that I can
abuse some if need be, and if it comes
down to it, the knife can be expendable
and easily replaceable without having
to scrimp and save to replace it.
There's still plenty of knives that won't
break the budget and will perform well
and last for years with care

The older I get, the less knife I carry. I occasionally carry my Benchmade 710, but for the most part I carry a Case Stockman single blade carbon steel, with a pocket clipt and thumb stud. And, it's a lock blade.
I've gutted, and skinned deer with less.

I have seen most of "Last Alaskan" series (love that show), and watched ole Hemo start to finish, butcher an entire bull moose with a diamond stone, and a Leatherman multitool 3" blade.

Some years ago I used a Minibuck
knife to dress a deer after my regular
knife got misplaced on a trip. I did
get it done, but it was a pain
My buddy has used a small (SAK?)
knife to dress a hog in the headlights
on one of our trips, and that was a pain.
I can do it with anything sharp, but
things go a lot easier with the proper
cutlery for the job

I should add that the same Minibuck knife
caused a rentacop to come unglued at a
security checkpoint even though I didn't
conceal it.  It went in the tray with all my
change and pen and pocket junk, but
she still signaled for the troops and they
(not quite) stuck me against the wall and
tried to lecture me about "weapons " nah

My veterinary friend had a son come to visit him from N Carolina.  When his son was just starting his trip, he
was dropped at the airport, and waiting to go through the  check, when he realized he had brought his pocket
  knife in his with him.

What to do?  He figured if he let them grab it at the check in, he would never see it again...and even may get some hassle over it.
Fortunate for him, there were some large potted plants over by the windows...so he went over there, dug a little hole on the off side...and buried the knife.
He figured even if somebody found it, maybe they would get some use out of it..rather than ending up in some
  junk pile, somewhere.

HJe visited his Dad up here for 2 weeks...then went back and found his knife just where he buried it !

Many years ago I was taking a one day trip to Southern California; as I got out of the car (running late) I realized I had a large two blade Case in a sheath on my belt. Left the knife with my wife, flew, came back late in the afternoon. That's when security got exercised over the empty sheath. Wasn't illegal, so he couldn't do anything.

Having been inthe business back innthe 90s, I have a couple plastic boxes (cigar box size) that are full of pocket knives I use, some trade-ins, some never sold.. One box, larger (3" up), and the other smaller ones. I will use one for a week or so, then go to another.  Those do not include the bigger, folding hunters.

Suddenly I find myself carrying the same small knife for the past 2-3 weeks. It is a USA made Camillus Yellow-Jacket 710.

It is only about 2 & 3/4 inches long, but handy as all get-out !  Sold quite a few of them back in the day..only
  only have the one left.

Sadly, it is 440 stainless.  Although it works well, I still wish it were carbon..

I carry a case xx in my pocket every day. It’s an xchanger but only carry sheath with xtra blades when hunting. I do use them tiny knives to field strip deer but used my case this time.

I was rummaging around in an old box of 'goodies' the other day, and came upon a knife I must have taken in trade.  It is an old, original Cold Streel SRK (search & rescue knife).

Today the SRK has a kraton handle, but this one has a stacked leather washer handle, but it has no end cap.
Nevertheless, the leather is still tightly stacked.  Usa made of course, with a Carbon V steel blade.

The finish seems to be a thick black coating of some kind..which is scarred up badly, although the blade itself is in very good condition...and about 1/4" thick.

I look forward to refurbishing it soon.  The closest pic I could find to the leather stacked model..was this stripped unit.
