Huge water discovery announced on Mars...!
« on: December 17, 2021, 08:11:48 AM »
And recent photos showing blue sky.
Which means there is an atmosphere on Mars, and likely life forms.

That was interesting. If it’s true a blue sky means oxygen.

Well that's exciting. Absolute proof of water, and life on Mars.
Maybe we could go up there and bring back some virus that could accomplish what China so far is struggling to do.

I tried TM7, I really did, but I could barely take one minute of that yo-yo before I had to close him out and move on.

The fellow narrating the video from Brighteon is remarkably uninformed. His judgements about Mars atmosphere are incorrect. Of course, he can say whatever he wants to say as it is his website and no one there to contradict.
He is particularly off base with his comments about the Ingenuity helicopter brought to Mars as part of the Perseverance mission.
He doesn’t remember the name of the machine. He calls it Scout. Since “Mars has no atmosphere”, he says, it is impossible for a helicopter to fly. He uses the inapt analogy to a helicopter rescue from Mt. Everest.
Mars’ atmosphere maybe very thin but it is there and able to produce massive dust storms visible from Earth through telescopes. The Viking landers back more than 40 years ago recorded hurricane velocities. The little Ingenuity copter makes use of this by having a rotor speed about five to ten times faster than a helicopter on Earth (2700 rpm vs. 225-500 rpm).
Blue sky? Well….yes and no. Photos of the sky close to the Sun will show a blue tint. The further away from the Sun, the more atmospheric dust (lots of iron oxide) absorbs color leaving the red. The gas composition of Mars atmosphere is similar to our own though much thinner.

TM7: Thanks for the note about the “scout” function of the Ingenuity ‘copter..
About the atmosphere or lack thereof…I have been interested in astronomy since I got my first “Golden Book of stars and Planets” 70 years ago when I was five. I have known that Mars had dust storms - thus an atmosphere - nearly that long and someplace and time read about water ice in the polar caps. The point being that these ideas have been common knowledge for a long time……Though, evidently, not to the man from Brighteon.
This does not diminish the importance of the discovery by the ESA of water deposits in the Valles Marineris.

Well, all I can say is; thank goodness for the GBO members that have actually been to mars and truly understand the situation, climate and flight restrictions on the planet.
Without these brave explorers we'd have no 1st hand knowledge of the real challenges of walkin around on that angry red planet.

The name of the Mars helicopter is Integrity. Apparently he wasn’t paying any attention to this mission.  To be able to comment on it.

Maybe not, but it wouldn't matter if they "think" they've found a ski lodge on Mars with an all day happy hour. Can't get there from here. Its more than an all day drive.

I think it’s a worthless venture. Only when we have humans on the planet will we know for sure. And that isn’t going to be in our lifetimes.

Ok, interesting device.
The fact sheet says it was designed to fly in the Martian atmosphere which is 1% of earth's and with 1/3 the gravity. That's fine.
But the question, or controversy, is if that near vacuum atmosphere is enough to support the liquid or solid phase of water in huge amounts?
That's the question I have, not if we like Adams or give him a B or C for his news report.

Btw, you mentioned astronomers have observed polar ice caps on Mars for many years _ _ would you have a photo of these ice caps that you can post?
.
Martian water is detected by Gas trace. The technology allows for detection of water as deep as one meter below the Martian surface. Such water deposits are insulated by the soil and protected against evaporation. In addition, the region in question, the Valle Marineris, is an extensive canyon system as deep as five miles in places. The depth further insulates.
Martian north polar ice cap can be seen to change size as shape as the planet progresses from Winter to Summer.
While most of the visible ice is layers of frozen CO2, water vapor in the atmosphere also freezes and is trapped. The topnpicture is the Northern ice cap. The other is the southern cap.
The Southern cap is perhaps more interesting as a subsurface glacial lakebwas discovered there in July, 2018

I agree. Way to much to improve right here to waste our money on a planet that would take probably trillions to have a handful of people on a planet with not enough air to breath. Heck i rarely leave the state. Sure dont give a rats ass whats on mars.

In the vastness of God's universe. Earth and Mars are like specks of dust. Really I think its irrelevant what is on Mars, and what isn't.  What we do know is that there are no humans living on a planet in our solar system. I believe we have known that for a long time. I also think its a big waste of money to keep trying to explore Mars in depth. It takes a craft six and a half months to get there, and really we live right beside it.   Of all the space missions we have done. We still have no proof of life anywhere else.

and it just keeps increasing our debt and like it or not we pay for it with our taxes. I think God gave us this planet and expects us to make the best of it. Not waste money trying to replace it and we are a planet covered with water so why would we give a rats ass if theres a tiny bit on mars. Doubt ill ever drink any of it. If God wanted us to explore the planets he would have made it much easier.

I "personally" think the energy and taxpayer dollars spent on planets like Mars could be better spent here.
I can't imagine how ANY information "real or imagined" concerning Mars would benefit the people here on earth.
I also have to say, I'm not even mildly interested in any way of what might, or might not, be there, or any other planet for that matter.

Elon Musk has some huge rockets being built in Boca Chica, Texas near Brownsville.  12 million lbs thrust.  Waiting for FAA approvals to launch the test versions.  He plans to send people to Mars in 2024 or 2026 depending on how fast he can get his test versions fully reusable and operational.  The rocket is called Starship with a Superheavy booster.  30' in diameter and over 400' tall.  Will be able to take 150 tons to Mars for colonization building.  We knew Mars had water at the poles which is all ice.  Mars is colder than earth.  Mostly carbon dioxide atmosphere.  Would have to wear a space suit with oxygen outside.  If Covid don't destroy the economies of the world, Musk can make enough money to get to Mars in his lifetime.  He will use Tesla profits as well as his Starlink satellite internet service.  He already has launched over 2000 satellites for Starlink.  The antenna to send and receive is only 16" in diameter.  It will cost $99 a month and $500 for the satellite and set up for your computer.  He says when all 4,000+ satellites are operational, internet speeds will start at 100 mb/second, and shooting for 200 with additional satellites.  This internet service is mainly for people living in remote areas that can't get land line services.  It will also be mobile and can be put on an RV in a couple of years.  He will make billions if millions world wide use this service.  This is what he will use to finance his Mars colonization plans.

I don't understand people wanting to colonize a planet where the atmosphere is about 95% CO2 and less than 1% oxygen and where the temperature reaches -220F. It is fine for sci-fi movies and novels but has no place in reality.

I CAN understand the urge to explore it and discover just what it is and is not. Live there. NO.

So do I. That's why at one time it was discussed that only older volunteers would be making the trip.
If they were physically able and knew the consequences.

Martian summers can attain mid 70's*F. The fact that the ice caps are predominantly CO2 in the solid phase lends me to think the vapor pressure and atmosphere on Mars is much greater than once told.  The good news is Mars is blessed with the most life giving essential gas in the Universe - - - Carbon Dioxide!
Maybe Scout is also serving as an agricultural implement as well?
.
Tm7: About vapor pressure. I am attaching a research study about that. If you do not wish to read the whole thing, specific reference to vapor pressurevcan be found on p1, col2, parag “results”.

Air temperature because the air is so thin undergoes wide swings from 70f to -100f. The air just does not hold temperature.

Composition of air on Mars….95% CO2, 2.8% N, 2% Ar. Trace gases make the remainder

overall it seems highly feasible that a creative evolution could happen on Mars with introduction of lichens, algae, bacteria, mosses, etc. which might start a carbon cycle, oxygen cycle, CO2 cycle, nitrogen cycle; and darken the planet and warm it.
Evidently not. The very real problem is lack of enough gravity to hold on to an atmosphere. Mars has only a fraction of Earth’s mass…..less than 40%. In simple terms it could hold only 40% of what Earth has. In the past, Mars evidently had liquid water….lakes and rivers. Where did it go? It leaked into space. In the past Mars had a molten core like the Earth. This core, spinning the Earth makes our planet a dynamo producing the magnetic field which surrounds us and protects our atmosphere from deterioration caused by radiation from the Sun. Mars no longer has this.
