Anyone reading sci-fi novels

The subject sort of died with Argent's demise on the forum so I thought I might revive it. I have been a sci-fi fan since a kid reading the Flash Gordon comic strip in the Sunday funnies. I have been a fan of Keith Laumer's Bolos novels although other authors that have taken over the stories were superior to him IMO. Right now I am working on a book written by Linda Evans and David Weber, "Bolos, Book 3" that is a series of stories and very well written. Again, IMO, " The Road To Damascus" is the best of the Bolo stories, written by John Ringo and Linda Evans.

Anyone got any favorites they can recommend?

Dune by Robert E Howard. Excellent sci fi material. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hobbit and lord of the rings trilogy are fantastic. Good luck finding their equal and you can only read it for the first time once. Sword and Sorcery ya can’t beat Robert E Howard’s Conan the Barbarian writings and the art work by Frazetta is awesome. I can no longer read fiction as my mind won’t allow it. I envy all who can.

I like Sci Fi, but not fantasy, will sit down one of these days and make a list. Mostly though I am attracted to short stories rather than novels.

Frazzeta did great art for a re-issue of some of Edgar Rice Burrows books also. "Moon Maid" for one and you can tell a Frazzeta painting of a woman easily. All five of Frazzeta'a art books have a place in my bookcase. I have a couple of Harrison books that I have never read. The "Stainless Steel Rat" was the first of his stories I read. John Ringo is one of my favorite authors and when he gets started on liberal leadership in his novels I love it. I just finished "The Last Centurion" and he really got wound up about them in that book. Very entertaining.

In my view, fantasy has witches and magic and stuff like that; while Sci Fi is based on science and scientific type tweeks to reality. But many now seem to consider it Sci Fi.

To me fantasy is werewolves, witches, and goblins, Casting spells, magical powers, etc. Sci-fi is based on science although sometimes unproven or impossible science. Dean Ing was an aeronautical engineer that wrote novels that expanded on scientific concepts and some of the things he wrote about have actually been developed to some extent.

My brother gave me a couple of science fiction books last year, started reading but stopped and will get going again after the New Year; the big theme in the late fifties early sixties was -- telepathic bs -- to the point it can ruin a story.
My brother, fifty years after I did has discovered Ace sci-fi books, two stories to covers to a book.

I have some audio books that I get from a SciFi site. They are fairly cheap about the cost of a hard back book from that site. On a CD if you want, or you can download them to your devises off the site.

I usually read sci fi short stories 8 to 2 over sci fi novels. I really love Edgar Rice Burroughs series (great cover art too) except for the Tarzan series, I don't know why but just never have had an interest in them. Some of my favorite short stories are from,

 I believe there were 25 books in the series. I have several authors I like.

This is why Star Trek various series were so popular.  With the exception of the transporter, almost everything they use is possible.  Much has already happened.  Cell phones were developed by a guy back in the 1970's who first saw the "communicators" on Star Trek.  Also, the cell phone today has many functions, kind of like the Star Treck tricorder.  We have lasers, but not phasers.  We haven't conquered fusion yet.  However, they have transported a few molecules over a laser beam.  We are developing reusable rockets.  Rockets have landed (SpaceX) over 110 times now after being used. 

I too like sci-fi, but not fantasy or witchcraft or magic junk.  I also liked Stargate SG1

However, NASA says to have warp drive or "space wormholes" would require a tremendous amount of power.  Thus we need to conquer fusion.

You mentioning the transporter made me think about them using the base of the transporter (the part they stood on) on the original series was the overhead part of the transporter on TNG.

I Dont see much difference in sci fi and fiction. Star Trek. Has a whooki. That’s sci fi not fiction right. How about the questionable aliens that are both male and female? Must be sci fi and not false errr fiction. Pretty sure I could come up with more comparisons..

I have been re-reading a four novel series by John Ringo and am about half way through the last book. Far, far in the future one guy sets off a civil war which included the whole world. From tech that is impossible now and probably forever in real life back to basically nothing except horses and oxen with most people knowing nothing of what to do with them. Fun times , well, not really, for those that managed to live through the fall.
