Question on Broadband TV service
« on: December 22, 2021, 08:03:54 AM »
I need to find something a lot cheaper than Direct TV so I can have a little TV. I see this Hulu ad for around 12 bucks with no ads. I watch History, Fox news, NGO and NGO2, RFDTV, Animal plant, and Discovery and the local Channels 6 and PBS 11. Most all that I watch are really reruns anyway and of course on a one hour show such as life below zero there are at least 25 minutes of ads. once a week they run a new show but even then, there are a lot of commercials app. 25 minutes. I do use the DVR, record a show and then I can fast forward to skip ads. Right now, I pay 113.00 a month.
I have Broad band now which takes care of my internet at only a fixed price of 55 dollars a month. Just trying to save some money. I do not watch movies at all as in my opinion they are for the most part trash.

We use DISH and was thinking about switching to Direct to save some dollars . They dont even give  you a reason  before they go up ,it just shows up on the next bill  And we have not upgraded since installation . I only watch a dozen or so channels like the ones you list . I dont need the other 600 .

We check reruns out of the library. There isn't any reception here.

Streaming via wifi is the future. Dish Network, and Direct tv are expensive, and they continue to do what they always have. Raise prices with no additional programing. I have Dish Network and have all these channels, but a large majority of them are garbage that I never watch. I'm about ready to ditch them and get Hulu, or one of the many other streaming sources for about half the cost.  If you want to hang onto your dish service call them up and tell them you want to cancel your service. they will instantly offer you a cheaper cost for what you have. My son just did this, but he canceled anyway and went with Hulu plus for about 60 a month.

To get Hulu and similar such items you have to be in an area where that is possible, often unless you are within X miles of a large city, it is not possible.

My two living locations are within 60 miles of the Twin Cities and cannot get it, without additional costs.

AT& T owns Direct TV now they play games you have to up grade or no TV will not cost anything then you up grade get the bill and the cost is up 32 dollars more a month if you don't like it pay 200 dollars for the equipment. That is what they did to me been with Direct TV since it first started 19.00 a month.  we had to buy the system and install it ourselves then make a phone call with the card that came with the equipment, and they set up the account. that was back around 95 and over the years it would go up a few dollars then AT&T took over and up went cost they play the same type games with cell phone promise you the world and then throw the screws to you. My Broadband services will support these options like Hula and our coop electric company owns Ecolink which is the Broad ban server. Another thing AT&T does is send the bill and only give you 8 days to return payment otherwise 40 bucks late charge. another way to stick it to you as the mail services is so slow you can just get it back to them is there is no problem with mail, of course they promote payment from your bank account and who knows what would happen as crooked as they are.

Well, I have hulu and I live a long way from any major city. I did the Direct TV thing like Deacon did but eventually dropped them and went to Dish because they had local channels. If not for the  local thing I would be long gone from them but I can only get CBS and NBC without a complicated antenna setup so dish stays for now.

Don't know where you live, but if you want to cut the cable why don't you get an antenna.
I live in northern New England and on my homemade four bowtie antenna with refector and signal booster I get about 20 or so stations including major networks with my antenna inside in a window,,, probably more if I put the antenna outside.

When I lived in NY during hurricane Sandy I put the same antenna outside the house and got 46 to 50 channels.  Since television is digital broadcast now, you either receive the channel or you don't- - no more fuzzy weak reception, and it's basically all high def over the air.

Btw, my homemade antenna beats all commercial store bought long range antennae I've tried, and takes up no space and cost a few bucks.
.
I would have posted similarly butt get next to zero response from der deacon... No help from me. Must really want to save some pizza money as he’s actually responding “ this time”

My wifi is through a phone line called DSL. Its not the fastest, but does okay for streaming content. So no, I don't think it has anything to do with living near a big city.

Deacon stated in his OP that he had broadband internet. I use exactly the same thing to stream hulu. 18 mbps is the only speed available for me and it works great. On air tv varies greatly depending on the population of the area in which you live. Those of us that live kind of in the sticks sometime don't have a great selection

How much do you pay, that is the reason we did not get even though we now have Smart TV.
I checked and commercial free is an additional 5 bucks a month.

With the Smart TV we can just add it , without one there are more gimmicks.

It is $12.99 a month for the commercial free version. I share the cost with my son. We also share a Prime account and I use the firestick to run everything and leave the tv control alone except to switch inputs.
