Yup, but I go back into the fifties. AM stations and a single speaker in those years.

Barbara Ann and the Duke of Earl are the first two I remember really liking; before that there were one or two country/western songs that struck my fancy but after the first two mentioned rock & roll was what I preferred.
At least up here, a top 40 station had BROAD spectrum of music styles they played, and there was no straight talk radio, all stations played some music.

After the mid-nineties I pretty much stopped listening, to new rock & roll but in the aughts there was some good new stuff but I did not really hear the songs or know the bands names till years after they were first run.

I generally listen to classical music on radio most often but I have, quite surpisingly,  found that, that, is subject to the same , over and over and over till you are tired of it that cursed rock 7 roll.

Not sure what category it fits, but I will never hear Rhapsody in Blue, too often.

Some of what is popular to most
is stuff I can't listen to.
I call it warbling and wailing.
I usually just change it or turn it
off and don't let it bother me.
What does get me is those who
try to warble and wail their way
through the Star Spangled Banner.

Pink Floyd
Crosby stills nash and young
Eagles
Boston
Diar straights
skinnard
Fleetwood mac
The who
Moody blues
Bachman turner over drive
38 special
Those would probably be my favorites. Not necessarily in that order but pink floyd would be #1 and the eagles #2 and skinnard #3. Theres many more that could be put on that list though. I went through about a 15 year stage when i listened to only country because rock went to hell but now with satellite radio i can listen to real rock again. That said the best voice ever in my opinion was George Strait and best female a toss up between patsy cline and stevie nicks and if pinned down would choose patsy cline

For personal listening sure, if I don't like it, I can turn it off or turn the dial..each being entitled to his own preference.

What bothers me most, are those who whether home, in the park or driving in their car..especially at traffic lights... turn up the volume to a deafening level, which of course, causes all within a half mile, to be required to endure the outrageous cacophany of noise.

I have little doubt that they would complain, were someone to turn to the same volume for talk radio, preaching or even classical music.
..But of course, this does not happen...a very different class of people...

I had to go back and check so I found out when some songs first hit the air waves.

First songs I remember (outside of Sons of the Pioneers records I grew up with) and Vaughn Monroe  Ghost Riders in the Sky.

Please Help Me I'm Fallin, in Love with You -- Lawrence Hankin Locklin -- 1960
My Little Corner of the World -- Anita Bryant (that is a surprise to me) -- 1960

Barbara Ann -- The Regents -- 1961
Duke of Earl -- Gene Chandler -- 1961

In the decades I listened to rock music often only three songs really stick in my memory:
1966 -- Lovin Spoonfull -- Summer in the City]
1968 -- Mary Hopkin     -- Those were the Days
1978 -- Gerry Raferty   --  Baker Street

Those are the few I actually know some of the lyrics to.

if were talking country
George Strait is definitely #1 male
Patsy Kine #1 female
Others i like are
Vince Gill
Clint black
Darius Rucker.
Johny Cash
David Ball
Alabama
hank williams Jr.
Heck ill add that if they sang today many of the rock bands listed above WOULD BE COUNTRY and MOST of the country sang today would have been rock in the early 70s. Bands like the Eagles, Skynard, pure prairie league (vince gill) Darius Rucker (hootie and the blowfish) All are every bit as much country as rock. Heck most of southern Rock could pass for country today. Alot of what turned me away from country and back to OLD rock was that country has been invaded by liberals. Heck theres even rap music in some country today. Country music has turned into a whole new classification in the last two or three years and im just not on board.

All country rock does is take a rock and roll song and add a twang to then -- poof -- it becomes a country song.
Now whory lyrics define country as much as the sound.

Way back seventy years ago, Mountain did -- Theme from an Imaginary Western -- which was truly Western sounding song.

I checked on a thread from a search engine that called it, the 25 best instrumental rock songs, once the got out of the sixties, they DID just sound like noise verses music.

My young British art instructor in college loved Patsy Cline and played it during class EVERY day, if I never hear it again it will not be too soon.

Well I can finally put a title to that song; have not heard for  long time.

This is the into spiel of WXYG, which showed up probably close to ten years ago around here:
If you grew up listening to underground, progressive rock, free form radio, or if you're just discovering or re-discovering the golden age of rock for the first time, we think you will be really happy that you have finally found your radio home.

We are returning to a better time when radio played all the great music - GENRES BE DAMNED!  Thousands and thousands of the greatest album rock songs ever recorded.  This is not a classic rock station where they play the same 200 songs over and over again.  This is album rock WXYG.

I still listen at time but when I first heard them , I heard songs I had not heard for decades over the air-waves.

I liked a few of there songs. Even saw them in concert twice. Wont argue that garcia isnt a great guitar player. I just dont understand the cult following they had. Ill say the same about hendrix. He could play but his songs for the msot part sucked. Now a guitar player who could sing? Clapton all the way.
Lloyd.....
Jerry Garcia is considered one of the top guitarist of all time by those who rate those things. His guitar riffs are truly beautiful. And Robert Hunter wrote truly beautiful inspirational songs. The Dead started out as the Heart Valley Rovers, a blue grassy jug band with Garcia on banjo. The rest is history to become the top live performance band ever.
Alot of people think of the Dead as a psychedelic rock band, but actually they're a California country western band with alot of jazz fusion.
If you got SIRUS in your truck find the Dead channel and give a listen to them..... I think you'll agree they were a great band. In fact, the Dead is all I listen to these days. Btw, they were not anti gun.

If your refering to the stone poneys they had nothing to do with the eagles and none of them ever became eagles band members. Only simularity is they both played with linda rhonstadt

actually i have to admit that that answer came from my wife who is an eagles freak. She went to sacramento last summer to see them in concert (one of her sons lives a bit north of there) and is already making plans to go to detroit this summer with a few freinds to watch them again. Me? I wouldnt drive a 100 miles to see anyone in concert anymore. Well maybe George Strait or pink floyd but even then id put a 200 mile limit on it and theres no way either of them would perform within 200 miles of sticks up here.
Right you are. After the Stone Ponys Linda's band were the guys  that went on to form the Eagles, is what I meant to say., (Senior moment!)

Did we leave out CCR? I dont see it mentioned anywhere. They were one of my favorite bands growing up. They had their own style. Some kind of a Cajun rock.

The first time I ever heard "Proud Mary" I was backed up to a drilling rig a little north of Denver City, Texas waiting to make a cutoff about 10PM. I have been a CCR fan ever since. I faintly remember a rock album titled "Swamp Rock" but can't remember who it was by. Maybe the Ventures, the greatest instrumental rock group ever. I am going to sort through my old albums and see if that's it.

Pink Floyd once made a VCR tape of some of their music in the Colosseum in Rome. I used to have it but I can’t remember where its at. It wasn’t a concert it was only a tape. No way would the authority’s in Rome allow that kind of crowd in there.

fact is most of the rock legends were liberals by our standards. Even southern rock bands like Lynard Skynyrd were anti gun.
