I went to Dodge after a lifetime of Chevy and GMC. I can't see the value in a pickup costing that much.

Checked on a slightly used GMC 3/4 ton for my BIL.

Loaded out but used.$83,000.00.

when i bought the truck before the ram i have now. A 2017 silverado. I thought at 45 it was HIGH. Went back in the service dept (they sold junk food) and they had a beautiful 3/4 duramax sitting there they were prepping for the showroom. 88k!!!!!!!!!  Almost twice what mine cost. Theres good and bad today. I payed 47 for my 2020 ram off road big horn. they called me about 3 months ago and asked me if i wanted to sell it. they offered me 43 for it with 35k on it. Very fair offer and they had me thinking right up to when i looked at the new ones that they wanted 53 for and wouldnt dicker a dime. Bottom line is that offer was no better then any trade ive done in the past. They just added to the trade in and took away any rebates. Told the wife the other day its time. Either tires and keep it or trade it now. But with the crap selection available and no real deals out there i think income tax return is going to tires. It will be the first truck since my 2004 silverado i kept more then 3 years. I had that one for 10. Might be time to keep another one for a while. Its been a real good truck so far.

LOL, reminds me of an uncle I had that would trade cars when he needed tires.
Dad explained to me that the uncle didn't have the money for new tires, so he'd trade cars.
My Ram isn't the loaded out version, but I've never bought those kinda pickups.
It runs, rides, looks, and drives, as good as any Chevy or GMC I've ever owned, and was "thousands" cheaper.

Downsized to three trucks. Sold the Vette, Blazer and Jeep. Too much keeping everything running.

Three trucks might seem overkill. We have a small farm with steep slopes on gravel driveway. All Chevy’s. 2003 ZR2, 2019 ZR2 and 2016 3/4 Duramax.

The 03 ZR2 is the farm / hunting truck. Good for those times where you can’t see the driveway in the snow and may wreck getting to the road.

The Diesel has 15k miles. Didn’t drive it for a year. Only took two days for me to change the batteries.

I'm guessing pickups wouldn't be as expensive if people were not buying them just to use for transportation.  I know quite a number of people like that, A pickup is something like a status symbol for them. Not saying people shouldn't have a right to buy whatever transportation they want, but just sayin.  Even trucks with high miles on them are insanely expensive, and many of them are nothing but a piece of junk, with frames built out of garbage Chinese steel, that rust away. Especially if its in the environment where salt is used on the roads and humidity is part of the atmosphere.

i kind of fall in the middle. Im not a farmer or a logger but Ive about always had a 4x4 truck. Mostly though because of winters here. I like full sized trucks because i feel if my wife (who drives it everyday) gets in a wreck theres much more steel to protect her. I haul stuff occasionaly but not very often and could probably get by with my trailer and the jeep. But the jeep is a 2 door and if you ever drove one on slippery roads youd know there not really the answer for that. I dont know about where you live but up here probably 90 percent of the familys i know have a pickup for there #1 vehicle. Theres a few that have sport utilitys but there mostly the yuppies and very few that have cars. Most of the cars are second vehicles that mostly are used in the summer. Obviously a good part of America agrees with me even down south because pickups outsell cars by A LOT and they do all over the country even down south where there is no snow. They sure arent some status symbol up here. What they are is the most practical mode of transportation. They will go through snow and ice, take you out in the woods hunting or fishing, pull your camper or your boat or atv and do that riding as well or better then most cars and getting darned near as good of fuel economy unless your idea of a car is one of those silly smart cars that should be considered a go cart not a real car. My ram has more back seat room then most cars have combined front and back room. You could darned near camp in the back seat. Gets 20mpg (which is on the low side if compared to a chev or ford) and rides much better then my dads suburu outback does. It will haull six people in comfort with a 4 wheeler in the back and make it in or out of camp in the middle of a blizzard. Hardly a status symbol when over 3/4s of the vehicles on the road are just like it.

So you think 3/4 of the vehicles on the road in this country are pick ups?  Its actually around 20%, and yes I'm standing by my statement that for some people a pickup is a status symbol. They buy big wheels and tires for it, and never take it off asphalt. Not knowing that big tires actually makes it worse for driving in snow.  They use it for transportation, and never haul anything but groceries.

you havent been on the roads up here. All you see are pickups and suvs. cars are much more rare. Look at any car lot  up here and its 3/4s pickups. The only dealers with more cars then trucks are the import lots. Ive drove trucks since 1977 and sure never bought one to impress anyone. Id about bet if you got out of the citys in states like TX its the same. Funny thing is the 3 best selling vehicles in this country are trucks. Take a look here https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g36005989/best-selling-cars-2021/#:~:text=Top%2025%20Best-Selling%20Cars%2C%20Trucks%2C%20and%20SUVs%20of,units%20sold%29%2025%20Nissan%20Sentra%20%2837%2C237%20units%20sold%29  I guess theres a crap pile of us trying to impress the girls with our macho trucks. Take away the city people and the liberal trash and that 2o percent would probably at least triple. What you fail to see and probably because of where you live is that some of us live where theres snow and ice on the roads for at least 3 months out of the year. A causual snow that my wife drives through 4 days a week would probably shut down most citys in the south. I always said if nascar ran one race up here in the winter on ice my mother would out drive about all of them. We get 200-300 inches of snow a year here and some counties twice that. Aint prius or corolla territory up here.

There was a thread on RFC titled, “Do you need a truck?”.  My contribution was a post saying. A better question may be, Do you need two trucks?

With no trash collection in rural areas, a truck bed comes in mighty handy. Some prefer a truck due to the driving position. Thinking the advent and plushness of the modern crew cab interior has helped drive truck sales.

More trucks on the road then 20% in this area. Most of the guys I know, have at least two trucks.

Lloyd. Can you guys use studded snow tires? Grew up in SD and that was the way to go back then. People had two sets of tires. Summer and winter.

they were allowed up to the late 60s then were banned because they tore up the roads. Back them there was alot of rear wheel drive cars and very few 4x4s. Today there not needed. Snow on roads doesnt even slow down traffic now that most have 4x4s.

Way more than 20% of vehicles on the road here are trucks. I'd bet if ya count SUV as trucks, which I do, it's more like 80%. I've never tried to count them but watching out the window looking at the highway out front it seems pickups are close to half of the traffic.

as to jacked up big tire rigs. Im kind of guilty of it. My wrangler has a 2 inch lift and 34 inch tires. Without them i would not get into my deer blind. Only other rig going in there is a atv or side by side. As to using it in the snow. Ive busted through 3 foot drifts (on the highway) a few times. Ive driven it down roads covered with well over 2 feet of snow. Not everyone with big tires and or a winch is trying to impress you. The ram is ready for new tires and it will get at least 33 inch tires and probably bigger. Never saw where a couple more inches of ground clearance hurt a thing. Now come summer we get a bunch of poser jeeps and trucks. Lifted to the sky with do dads all over them and not surprisingly a better wax job then my challenger. Probably never been dirty unless the freeway had some dirt on it. Again most drove by liberal city idiots that think they look cool. Now want to make me laugh. Have someone in one of those poser jeeps wave to me. I wave to my friends not to idiots.

when i moved here in the mid 80s this town had some tourists but not a 1/10 of what we have now. We get absolutly overun in the summers now. People parking campers on every two track dirt road around here. Ive even had to chase them off of the road to my house that has signs everywhere. The beaches look like (censored word) woodstock in the middle of the summer with whole communes of tents set up. I think part of it is covid. People think if they come up here in the wilderness there less likely to be infected but then park there camper 10 feet from the next one. Had to chuckle last year. we have an indian casino about a 1/2 mile from here. They even camp in there parking lot. I kind of chuckle these days at the people bitching about snow birds invading the south in the winter. Its just as bad up here with people from the south invading us in the summer. Probably to get out of the heat and i lived there and can understand it. We have whole subdivisions on some lakes up here that are owned by people fromt the south that come up here in the summer. That said its the same bunch of city liberals as we send down there in the winter. When i moved here there was 2 campgrounds in our country. today theres 17!!! and they still park on the side roads because theres no room. Its a beautiful place to live but the wife and I are considering moving 200 miles east to where i was born and most of my relitives live. its just as nice of an area if not nicer and the tourism isnt near as bad.

If the uncontrolled EPA gets to continue its abuse of power without question. Many will be priced out of owning a pickup.

My jeep is the same as Lloyd's except in color, wheels and it wears a Warn winch. My wife insisted we have a winch after we got seriously stuck in loose gravel in the creek in Montacello canyon box one time and spent several hours getting free. I have used it exactly three times since I installed and it was to free other vehicles, not my jeep. I call it grandma's security blanket.   ;D Petroleum production is the 800# gorilla in this area with farming and ranching bringing up the tail end so you see a lot of pickups on the roads here. I really don't know the ratio but trucks are the majority of transportation with suvs being the second and cars a distant third.

Trucks with extremely high lifts and huge tires were the fad for several years here. I called them step ladder rigs. You don't see many now as I suppose people learned just how rough they are on running gears and how much gas it requires to move those huge tires.

And here i thought my 2020 truck was expensive at 36k. My banker said no, that is not expensive for that truck.
I guess having a BIL who is the #2 man at the dealership helped.

8000 on mine. That is twice what the jeep weighs so I though that should be plenty of grunt. The three trucks it has pulled out of the mud have been bigger and heavier than the jeep and it had no trouble.

i owned a couple of them back then including one with a 304. Funny how we thought they were so stout when in fact they put out about the same hp as a tj with a 4 cyl. I drove a old cj5 6 cyl last summer. Couldnt beleive the differncei a cj and a tj let alone my jk. Those were some crudely built old units. But that said they were great off road due to there size. I always thought about getting one to play with but that drive last summer cured me of that. I do still miss the tjs though.
When Jeep was still AMC, that was all I drove. That 304 V8 engine in them.

Sold the 67 Jeepster Commando. Cool Jeep. Metal doors, steel half cab and small bed. Totally rust free with a 350 in it. Came out of Oregon. Never drove it in the rain or snow. It spent most of its time in the barn collecting dust.

The heater was sort of wishful thinking but it could idle up steep hills in 2nd gear. Biggest thing I didn’t like was the brakes. Knew one day I’d forget and brake at the normal time and it’d be too late.

Replaced it with a ext cab 03 ZR2 which is a very small truck by today’s standards. It “floats” like a Jeep in the muck, has a bed and just the right amount of room inside for one guy hunting or farm work.

Ammunition is like firewood. The more you have, the warmer you feel.

The Warn name has been around for a long time, and everyone assumes they build the best winches. There is a guy in Utah that has a business called Matts offroad recovery. He travels for hours at times to pull stuck people out of places. He has a jeep, and a vehicle called a morrvair that was built from a corvair station wagon. He uses Apex winches that Harbor Freight sells. there is another guy out there that does fabrication work, and he is in the process of building a rock crawler. He just installed a 12000 Lb. Apex winch on it. His youtube channel is called Fab Rats. The guy is very good at what he does, and I think I would trust their judgement on what winch is best.  Both Matts Off Road Recovery,  and Fab Rats have youtube channels. Quite interesting to watch.

Here is Paul building a bumper that will hold air pressure and a winch mount for the Apex winch.
