This new "part time" job is a cake walk. They moved the cake hopper controls inside to the dash, along with the hay spike controls so in bad weather, I don't have to get outside.
My biggest issue so far, is finding the cattle. Its 700+ acres of canyons, and draws and I haven't learned all the roads and cow trails yet.

Their pretty typical "black Angus". Pretty laid back if you work'em slow.

Made a mistake with one little Heifer. She was very friendly and I let her eat out of the bucket. Now she’s over 1000 lbs and REAL bossy. My neighbor recommends a 2x4.

When I learned more, found that’s how ranchers get killed by their “pet” bulls.

I'm not a fan of antelope meat, and I see'em every day, but the mule deer are big, and I think a buck, and or two does every year would be about right

Where I live is like no other place. When you go to town for dinner, there are pickups with half cover stock trailers on restaurant, and cafe parking lots, and in the stock trailers are saddled horses and every saddle has a rope on it.. These guys out here are real cowboys, not pretenders.

Like no other place? Not really as you see the same thing here. Do your real cowboys ride the cafe chairs with their spurs on? Some of ours do, others just wear tennies.

Well I didn't mean to slight New Mexico, I was describing where I live, but no doubt New Mexico has its share.

I don't see many cowboys getting outta those pickups wearing tennis shoes (fact I don't remember any), and yes, I see the occasional set of spurs at a restaurant table.

Thought I made in my point in my post. Your town is not unlike about any other among cow country towns. You haul what you make your living with. In my case the oil producing equipment outnumbers the cow producing equipment a lot but there are still quite a few cowboys parking at the cafes and some of them do tromp around in tennies. One ranch hand I knew seldom wore anything else.

We lost a neighbor cattleman last year , killed by one of his Brahma bulls . never turn your back to any of them .

I have been around holesteins all my life. I remember being in kindergarten having to walk a mile to get the bus when dad was working 3rd shift. When walking along the pasture field all the cows would come running to the fence out of curiosity and scare the daylights out of me. I was always assured they wouldn't hurt me, but for a little kids it was terrifying. Any bull that they had for breeding always had a nose ring, and many times a chain attached to it. I remember a couple of them being pretty bad tempered. I think if I remember correctly one of them was pushing 2500 lbs.

Dairy Breed Bulls tend to get Meaner then Beef Breeds....And Surprising...Pound for Pound...Jerseys are the Worst....

This type of grazing is pretty much sparc and you have to be aware of how many acres per cow.
At the present, its drought conditions and has been a while.

When I was kid my grandpa had a Holstein bull and he was equipped with a nose rig and blinders. He could see down thru little slits in the blinders to graze and that was all. We were all warned to stay away from him and not bother him because he would come after you by sound if riled up. I learned at an early age to carry a pitchfork when going into a pen with any bull we had. I never had one get after me as I gave them a wide berth but I did see my dad fend one off a couple of time with a pitchfork. Bulls don't like pitchforks. One of our neighbors had a Jersey bull that got him hemmed up in their barn and darn near killed him. Broken ribs, arm, and internal injuries. It took him quite a few months just to be able to get up and around again. The bull got sold.

Ya know, I've never been around dairy bulls, but have heard about'em all my life.
When I was a kid we had a Jersey milk cow that was as gentle as an old dog.

Dairy bulls get mean for obvious reasons because they are penned up and usually in a barn full of cows. If on pasture they are generally pretty docile, although they do like to be heard and sometimes throw some dirt. I've been around cattle my whole life and the only times I've ever heard of a bull getting real snotty is in a pen. Of course you need to know how to read and handle them as well, just like any other animal.

Dad rented his pasture to a neighbor for a while. One afternoon the neighbors wife came down to feed a the bull pinned her to the barn. Dad had a catahoula that zipped in and bit down on the bull's nose. Dad said the bull started slinging his head and Freckles hit the ground 3 or 4 times but did not let go. Before his teeth tore out of the bull's nose Diane was able to get away, though she had some bad bruises and sore ribs.

Grass here cures on the stem. There's some that grow irrigated hay for sail, but where those pictures were taken, little or no farming.
