Retirement Is Over! Again!
« on: January 07, 2022, 12:23:19 PM »
Well sorta. Been fully retired for about 15 months, but was offered a 20 hour a week job checking cattle, and predator control.
I'll be taking care of 23 momma cows, and 18 yearlings.
Keep the fences checked, and set a round bail of hay out when needed.
Its cowboyin sands the horses.
Their furnishing me a Kubota 4X4 with a cab, a tractor with a  cab for haying.
Side bonus is a couple of mule deer if I can hit'em.
Its canyon pasture in part of the Palo Duro canyon complex on a little over a section of land backed up to the north end of the 6666 ranch.
I keep my own hours, ask for help when I need it. I start Monday morning.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

I thought about offering hunting rights for labor on my farm , but the chance of someone getting seriously injured and a lawsuit . I became reluctant to the idea .

Yeah.  People at the end of the road lost their
place in a lawsuit after a hired man died on
the job, even though it was his own fault and
carelessness that killed him

Not too awful bad with one of
those nice kubota cart/buggy
doo dads.  Cattle will surely find
a bad spot in a fence if there's
one to find, but not near as bad
as a horse. If there's one teeny
tiny sharp pointy something on
a mile of fence, a horse will surely
find it and cut itself seemingly
on purpose

I can't imagine having a better job at my age. If I can get Rufus to help me pen cattle occasionally, the pace is slow, and I'll have an entire canyon to myself.

Sounds like a winner to me.  A job you can enjoy, hunt , and still be contributing..ENJOY..

The only consultations I am sought for anymore, are either blacksmithing or spiritual/Bible issues...

However, those have no pay involved...beyond the satisfaction of helping others.

...Go ahead and savor your new job...

Great gig!  Our small herd of black angus stays together. Find one, you’ve pretty much found the herd.

Herding them is a different story. Bucket of feed or a round bale on the hay spike works better then chasing. Busy time will be calving. Sounds like they keep the bulls separate.

If good grass, water and no bull testing the fences to visit, you should be good. My biggest fence problem is misc trees that fall on the fence.

My cows don’t like dogs and will kill one if they can catch it.

Not sure about Texas winters but it was 8 degrees this AM in VA. Hopefully the side by side has a heater.

Congrats and post some cow pics!

Not many trees except mesquite. I'll get a better look at the fences Monday, and I'm not sure what breed their runnin.
As long as it's not Charolais I'm good.

The Palo Duro Canyon Complex is miles in scope. A portion of the southwestern area is tourism, while the rest is owned by cattle ranchers. I'll be working in the northeastern part of the complex.

Looks like interesting country if I found the general area on google earth. Yee Haw, giddy up, Kobota.

I grew up way down south on the western edge of Hackberry Draw  right at it's head and prowling the cap was a favorite pass time when I was a kid. Never did get caught while doing so.

So, what's with the Charolaise ?

Big & mean?
“The Charolais has earned a bad reputation for its temperament. Its personality can run the gamut from skittish to aggressive. Charolais also tend to fight with each other. Bulls are difficult to deal with, and cows protecting calves are equally dangerous.”

https://homesteadontherange.com/2013/12/11/charolais/

If in amongst em, inside the vehicle is a good spot. Friends wife left the golf cart and got chased by a angus cow last year.

Cows are funny. Normally laid back they act all suspicious if I bring my neighbor who just stands at the truck when I feed. He says yup....cows can count.

Charolais are easy to stir up. Once they are the can get dangerous. Older mamma cows can be super aggressive when they have a calf, and I've seen bulls in adjoining pastures tear down 50 yards of fence trying to fight through it.
The calves when born are big, and mamma cows many times have trouble calving on their on.
Charolais in short, are a pain in the ass.

Yep!
Went out to look at cattle today. All registered Black Angus cows and heifers. Already broke to a pickup with a cake box. I'm in business.
They also decided I needed a take home pickup, and the Kubota will be used if I decide I need it.

Black Angus & company truck! Great gig. If cows like mine, they’ll chase that truck like Indians after a stage coach.

Sounds like good outfit. Goes a long way.

Congrats and Black cows matter!

That's not a job, you should be paying them...

So the 6666 is a real ranch?  Saw their outfit on the show Yellowstone.  I think they are going to make a spinoff of it about the 6666.

Yes, the 6666 ranch is known for its cattle, and cuttin horses. I grew up around horses, and cattle, but the Quarter horses that come off the 6666s, and the King ranch are 2nd none.
Where I live is like no other place. When you go to town for dinner, there are pickups with half cover stock trailers on restaurant, and cafe parking lots, and in the stock trailers are saddled horses and every saddle has a rope on it.. These guys out here are real cowboys, not pretenders.

That is exactly how the show portraits it.
