Brrrrr
« on: January 31, 2022, 04:44:17 AM »
The weather guy is forecasting a low of 8 degrees Wednesday night and 3 for Thursday night. I know that is ordinary weather for some of you but this is the sunny southwest. It's not supposed to get that cold. Ma Nature should keep it up north where it belongs and people like Lloyd are used to it.

It should increase business for the plumbers and hardware stores.

It sounds like that barbwire fence is still down up there. We are supposed to hit 40 Wednesday before the freezing rain arrives that will change to snow and continue into Thursday with a high of 21. Darn. I though we might make it thru winter without a really cold spell like we managed to do last winter. I know where I will be Wednesday, Thursday, and probably Friday. In the house where it's warm. No job to go to, no stock to feed anymore, so no need to even open an outside door.

Well I can feed, and hay without getting outta the truck if I can get into the section. One gate to open, but I've put enough hay that should get'em through this one.
Just checked the weather again. 7 degree low Wednesday, 2 degrees Thursday, and 8 degrees Friday.

The highs are 21, 28, and 32.

Having an ole fashioned winter here. Had one night last week it reached 10 below here. Have had a number of nights near zero. Last night was 3.  Supposed to have a couple days in the 40's next two days, with rain and ice, then snow. I wish it would just stay cold.

Only reached 69 here today according to the thermometer on my front porch. I was hoping for 70. I suspect that thermometer is reading high tho due to late afternoon sun.

I went to the drug store to pick up some meds and my Tundra thermometer said it was 63 when I left and 55 when I got back home.

I dont like winter anymore. Used to live for it when i raced snowmobiles but now its just cold and most of my time outside is blowing snow. I made a decision about 10 years ago. I could either buy something down south to spend winters or i could stay here and afford toys like side by sides, new vehciles, harleys  ect and not have to worry to much about the crap going on today like food prices and gas prices spiking. Plus my parents are old (dad passed a few months ago but mas still here and needs help) I also remembered when i was stationed down south that oppressive summer heat and humidity is just as bad as cold and snow. Yup most of that is summer but it still gets warm down there this time of year. So i decided to stay. Built myself a hell of a reloading room and a heated garage to work on vehicles to have something to do in the winter. Some days i still question my decisions. I almost did it once. Buddy from the service lived in south east North Carolina. terrain there is very much like up here. Could have had a decent place at a reasonable price. But heck then youd all call me a snowbird. Lately up here we see as many people from teh south comming up here and buying summer homes as we see locals going south. I guess it comes down to what your used to. If you grew up in the south and the heat doesnt bother you then thats great. If you grew up up here and cold and two weeks of straight snow doesnt bother you then thats great. I guess i kind of fall in the middle anymore. Sure dont like heat and snow and cold gets old too. But I guess it just wasnt worth it to me to spend the money to get around it.

I guess one advantage i had if you can call it that was i was an electrical lineman. Outside was my office. Only concessions our company made to weather was if it was below zero and there wasnt trouble we could stay in the shop and work on our trucks. Snow storms werent something we dreaded. No storm was. We make good money when the crap hit the fan. A decent blizzard usually added a grand to our pay checks, sometimes more. When everyone else was hiding in the house because of a blizzard or wind storm we were out making money. Ya it sucked sometimes but we had fun with it too sometimes. Use to make us laugh when some idiot would come out and bitch his power was off for 8 hours and he missed his foot ball game or favorite tv show.

Makes me kind of chuckle when someone down south gets hit with a winter storm and bitches about how cold it was. There sitting in there warm house or work place and the lineman, tree services, police and emergency service guys are actually out working in it. We almost got shipped down for katrina. Our truck was packed and our suit cases were on it and they ended up canceling it. I can just imagine those lineman pulling up to miles of broken poles and wire down and wading through water to get the power back so some yuppy can run his ac and watch tv.

Well when retirement time came for me I had to chose between my adopted home of Alaska or going back to the south where I grew up. Our last spring in Alaska I drove down the Kenai from Anchorage, the snow was piled up at least 30 ft high on both sides of the road. When I got back to Metlakatla I called my friend that owns the ranch and asked if they had any houses for sale. And here I am. Haven’t shoveled any snow in 10 years now.

It’s 46* outside right now but by noon it will be in the 70s.  :D

I have often thought about how nice it would be to spend winter down south, but then spending a winter in the north east just makes you appreciate spring, summer, and fall that much more.  In winter you can dress warm enough to do what needs done outside. Summer in Florida, you couldn't take enough clothes off to feel comfortable outside.
I always thought I live in one of the best places in the country. Get all four seasons. Winters are generally never that bad. Summers are generally never that hot. Spring and fall are awesome. No hurricanes, volcanoes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, mudslides, or forest fires.

We had several days of -20s weather in the early morning hours...with days that went just above zero.

We got 3-4 feet of snow with it, and cold snow is heavy..

Temps seem to be moderating this week though, we're up to +14.6 at present.

have agree with the clothes thing. up here at least you can dress for it. I remember our asphalt dock in south america being so hot your sneakers would stick to it. The air so thick if felt like you couldnt breath. I might be able to handle the dry heat in inland az or tx but no way i could put up with the coastal south. Norfolk was miserable for this guy. No way i could do florida in the summer.  Ill sit in my warm tractor and blow snow thank you. Its actually humid here too because of lake superior and when it gets up in the 90s its miserable. But we might get a half a dozen days of that crap in a year. Summers may not be as long here as some places but the weather is absolutely beautiful 90 percent of the time. Its why the southerners are buying up vacation property here and coming here for the summer to escape the heat.

bad thing is the same problem we have up here with people flocking here in the winter is the same you have in tx with all the northern lightweight jag offs heading there in the winter. i see alot more up here that head to texas then to florida anymore.

We get very few tourists here. The country is pretty rough, and Palo Duro Canyon is about it in the way of attractions.

It's the same deal in southeastern NM. Single digit humidity is the norm in summer. In August we will get some double digit days. I really don't care for the 30-40% stuff but it still isn't bad sitting in the shade on the patio and we almost always have a breeze and I have an outdoor fan for when we don't. Watch the birdies, read a book, or just relax and let the world pass by while drinking something cool. It's tea for the wife, water for me mostly but I will confess to a lite beer once in a while.

Tourists? Not many, it's flat and you have to drive at least 150 miles just to see a tree that wasn't planted by man. There are a few that come in winter to play golf at the county run course or just get out of most of the cold where it isn't crowded.

Although some here are still wintering in Florida, some are heading for inland Texas...i think primarily, because they are not yet ripped of as "snowbirds"..

I lived for some years in Texas, Ft Hood of course..and San Antonio....then I owned a home in the "golden triangle"..in a town named Vidor..near Beaumont.

I didn't really care for the coastal moist heat..  I suppose, if I were to do the Texas thing..I might try the "hill country"  out toward  Fredericksburg or Gruene, unless they are somewhat lefty being just west of Austin..

... But I am not about to be doing any of that kind of travel right  now..

One benefit of living in a northern, cold rural place or very small town...no homeless hanging around.

used to go home with a guy in the service from NC. they called me a yankee there too but would fight anyone that dared threaten me. I guess i was there pet yankee. What ive found is all that silliness goes away as soon as they get to know your character. Actually had a bar tender refuse to serve me when i went up to buy a round. I thought he was joking and went back to the table and told the boys what he said. My buddys brother was a middle weight golden gloves boxer and walked calmly up to the bar grabbed the bartender by the shirt and drug him across the bar and gave him a pretty good tune up. Told the guy he got off easy. Next time he was going to let me deal with it. I was never questioned again in there. Funny thing was that was back in the early 70s and the bar had a dotted line down the middle. I asked what it was for and they told me blacks on one side whites on the other and they had a white and black bartender. So i guess they would have rather served a black then a yankee ;) We dont like tourists much up here either or people from out of the area moving in. But there is no name calling or fighting over it and we dislike the people from lower michigan comming up here as much as someone from Alabama. But the  civil war bs ended long before i was born. We dont judge by where your from but how you act and for the most part a decent person from anywhere is welcomed. Its the yuppie city liberals that we detest. Ive got no problem being called a yankee but a smart man would do it smiling.

Dee. Any issues with cattle waterers? We have insulated waterers with a ball in the opening. They never freeze but if the power goes out, the AG well stops working.

Ours are on a timer, but the tanks freeze over. Its warmed up to 8 degrees this mornin, and the snow is drifting pretty good.
I'm waiting on a phone call to see if there will be somebody to available to come help me if I have problems.
Where I work is rough, and very isolated,  with spotty phone service.
