How about when homes had that big square gas heater grill on the floor. Many a kid got burned by them. Or a toddler would walk across them. It would burn the crap out of them.

Used to be a floor furnace right in the
other room here. Big natural gas job.
I forgot why they had to remove it.
Probably like everything else and it
worked too good

I lived in a house that had one of those heaters and it did work very well. Just don't step on it when its on. There was a kid on that block who somehow sat on one, he had a checker board second degree burn on his butt. I didn’t  know if it scared him or not. It must have been running full blast.

Had one of those in an old rent house when I was a kid. A little cousin fell on it when he was about 2. Got the little square blisters on his hands and screamed like a panther.
Stayed clear of after that.

We lived in a house with a floor furnace in our very early married years. We were in a prolonged cold spell and the furnace was running constantly and our daughter managed to fall on it. You can still see the scars on the palms of her hands if you look closely. We warned her constantly to not walk across the thing but being a little kid she went ahead and got burned but she never walked across the thing again. Not only were they dangerous for little kids, they were inefficient gas hogs.

probably 90 percent of the people up here heat with gas and the rest with wood. I think i remember once that co2 killed a guy that had a gas heater. probably a bigger chance of dying choking on your supper or getting hit by lightning 3 times. Its the ONLY economical answer up here unless your young and have access to wood and do all the work yourself. Electric might work down south but it would destroy your budget up here. Geothermal just doesnt cut it up here either unless you have a back up source of heat. Buddy put one in his 2000 square foot well insulated new home and when it gets around zero the best it will do is keeping his house at about 60 degrees. Good cheap air though. But for the days i use air it sure woulnt ever pay me back in savings over my central air. bottom line is wood kills more up here with fires hands down compared to gas. Electric? I cant tell you about any dangers of it because i dont know a single soul up here that uses electric heat.

Wood is only used here as feel good thing in the fireplace on really cold days. The only source is to have it hauled in and it is expensive plus no one wants the work involved with it. I live in the country so propane is my heat source, natural gas is cheaper but it isn't available out of town and then there is electric. My daughter and ex daughter-in-law use electric heat and their bills are about four times the size of mine. Electric heat, even here in the sunny southwest, is an expensive way to heat.

The only deaths I know of around here from using gas have been people using unvented heaters during cold spells but they have been few and far between. The blame is really on the person and not the gas.

If the forecast is correct the cold is gone for a time. Supposed to get into the 60's today as it did yesterday and continue on to next Wednesday.

I’m in a all electric house, the bill is usually $130.00 for heat or AC. But i don't know this time after those cold days and nights we just had.The meter reader told me probably $160.00 this time.

The problem with electric here is people think they can use just any  extension cord to run a portable  heater , dont even consider   what amps the heater is pulling .  Its a regular event in the Bham area of house fires being reported .

Was cold here yesterday evening. On the way to IHOP, the marquee at Walgreens was showing the temperature at -196 F.

Bottom edge lights out so if there had been a decimal point it would not have shown but the actual temp was in the 40's.

The 60+ weather until the middle of next week didn't happen. Got out of bed to find we were getting out fourth snow of '22. It appears out total of the white stuff might have reached 3 1/2". It made 43 today and the snow is all gone, just the way I like it to be.

We got a light dustin of snow, 29 degrees. Got up to 40. Fed the cows then met the family in Canyon for kids basketball games then dinner  in Amarillo. Finally made it home.

Well temp. is holding steady at -1 where it has been since noon, supposed to get to around -15 tonight but the weather forecasting up here for the past week has been lousy.

Went out and put some ice melt on the sheets of ice that the stinking high 30 day we had last week caused.
Nice thing is the snow is now has a hard crust so you can just walk on the snow and ignore the side walks.
Used to do that very often when hunting in winter as a youth, back when we had very high drifts every winter, then you would hit one of those weird soft spots and suddenly you were up to your chest in snow.

I miss the old days, often. 8)

newer unvented wall furnaces have to have a co2 detector on them that shuts them down if the level gets to high. Ive heated an apartment out back my son lives in for 10 years with an unvented wall furnace from menards that doesnt have the feature and it has two co2 alarms on the wall and neither have made a peep in 10 years. Had one guy tell me his would set off alarms all the time and asked if id look at it. come to find out he had it set for natural gas and it had about a 10 inch flame when it was on high.  cant fix stupid.

OK, come on down here in July and walk around outside while it's 105-106. Then I'll get a chuckle---or probably a big laugh. I understand about being used the cold when it get cold and stays that way. We never get the chance. It's t-shirt weather for a few days, then wear all the clothes you can find for a few days, and then back to t-shirts during the cold months plus the blankety-blank wind never ceases except for a few hours at a time. At least it only lasts a few weeks.

no thanks ill take the cold. But i think either way your body tends to adapt to it. I remember when i was stationed at little creek va it got down to 30 degrees and even snowed a bit one day. I thought i was going to (censored word) freeze. If you stuck me outside blindfolded i would have told you it was 10 below and i was in alaska!! One advantage to the cold is you can dress for it. Until they come up with air conditioned pants and shirts theres not much you can do about heat other then head indoors to the ac.

Spells like that only last a short time and I can stay in the cool now. Normal summer is in the 90's and that isn't bad especially since the humidity is usually in the teens or even lower. 95 degrees and 7% humidity with a 10 mph breeze is pretty pleasant.

I can still remember one of the worst jobs of my life though. Late July and I was building heavy duty shelving two tiers high around the inside of a 20'x35' metal storage building with no windows and only a roll up door and a walk in one right beside it which gave the building no air flow at all. By heavy duty I mean 2" tubing and #9 flat expanded metal that all had to be cut, fitted, and welded in place. No helper, just little ol' me, a victor cutting torch, Lincoln SA 200 welder, 7018 stick rods, and we had one of those hot spells that reached 108 while I was doing it. A box fan and extension cord saved my life as I kept it on high speed and about 3' from me. I also kept my 3 gallon water can close.

Ive gotten to where im pretty good making an oxy/acetylene weld with my torch using a wire coat hanger. I’m going to buy one of those welder/generator rigs this summer. I haven't figured out what make and model yet. I have a Lincoln AC cracker box but i want one with an engine and  wheels so i can move it around. Lincoln makes those also.

I gave one of those to my son years ago, an older one with copper windings. That is one of the best AC cracker box welders ever built. I have an old Wards with a sliding amp setting and a DC converter that sets on top of it that I bought back in the 60's. That makes it capable of using any stick rod. A welding supply dealer told me that Lincoln actually made it. Anyway it has been a good old machine although the cooling fan did eventually give up the ghost. I replaced it with a larger fan made for a Miller cracker box. The way my hands shake now stick welding is something I don't attempt any more. I have a small Lincoln wire welder and I can prop up where I can still make a fairly good looking weld with it and do the same with the acetylene torch as long as it's small stuff where I can stand the heat. A #4 tip is the largest I will use. The days of overhead are gone and vertical up and down have to be where I can brace my arms to stop the shakes.

With the sun as high in the sky, as it already is this time of year, temp. below 20 do not feel as biting as they do in Dec to early January.

The SouthEast side of the house here is a hot spot year round but some time I shovel snow there and think , this isn't so bad but as soon as I go around the corner, I change my mind quickly.

10 degrees right now and I just finished shoveling/blowing snow; it is odd how after only two weeks of not doing that , or any thing of much, this easy one today had me more tired than when I spend over two hours doing the same thing. :o

Don't believe in it. 8)

Do to the factor the streets in this town follow the river , not the compass, the house sits cock-eyed; go around to the North  by Northeast corner, any time of year where the sun does not shine it is a cold bitch in winter and nice and cool spot in a heat wave.
