When I was 16 years old I bought a Rem. BDL in 25-06. At that time in the same gun store I bought a Leupold Vari X ll 3x9  scope for 80 bucks. . I put it on the gun, and was on there and used for the last 48 years. Just this year I took it off and sent it to Leupold because the clarity had diminished. The scope was never damaged. Didn't have any dings or scratches on it. The clarity just diminished probably due to being in hot sun, being in cold temperatures then bringing it inside. I really didn't know what Leupold would do with it, but they are sending me a new VX-Freedom 3-9x40 Hunt-Plex .  Don't know how a company can stay in business doing such things, but it proves they stand behind their lifetime guarantee.

they did the same for me about 5 years ago. I had an old vari x 2 2x7 that lost its seal due to the orings drying up over the years. They sent me a brand new vx2 2x7 that is probably 4 times better then the old ones optically. Had click adjustments to and i learned to hate the friction adjustments on the old ones. THey were fine if you left them on a gun with one load forever but im changing loads about every year in my guns to test different bullets. I MUCH prefer a click adjustment. All of my Leopold now are click adjust models. My oldest is a var x 3 and to be honest the newer vx1 and freedoms have better glass then the old 3s did.

Maybe because they don't have to do it too often.

I have an old vari-II 2 to 7 power. I sent it off about 20 years ago and got it serviced.
Been thinking about sending it back and seeing if they could service it, and maybe put a BDC elevation knob on it and click adjustment windage.

I just use the iron sights. They are like the M14. So is my Ruger 10l22.

I have an Eotech on mine, and love it, but the leupold would be a good backup.

i can shoot a scope faster then open sights and something like an eotech or red dot faster yet. Add to that that open sights are about useless in the dark. My preference for an ar is a red dot thats got battery life long enough to allow me to leave it on all the time or one of the instant on ones. If they made an eotech like that there probably all id buy because nothings faster. But i dont like having to flip safetys or light switches when something goes bump in the night.

The gloss black does look nicer, but that won't matter all that much to me. I'm pretty happy they are sending me a new scope at no cost.  Vortex is another company that offers lifetime warrenty even if the scope is damaged, but most of their scopes are made in Philippines, and China. Only one that is made in the US, is the Razor HD.  Leupold is strictly made in the US at the facility in Oregon. 

There still are some companies that still have awesome customer service. I would think that it would pay off in the long run, by getting repeat customers buying their products. Another company I just dealt with that has great customer service. Is SVS sound in Ohio.

Agreed! I prefer the gloss on a wood stocked, blued gun. But I prefer free a whole lot more!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to like gloss on a gloss blued gun but anymore like the look of matte even on them.

I like gloss. My quarry likes it too... Hence matte for me.

A few years back I was looking for a gloss Leupold scope made the same year as my trusty old 6mm. I love that old gun and just wanted it to be period correct. Spoke with a real nice fella who dealt in Leupold scopes. He told me optics had advanced so far that $100 bargain scopes had better quality glass than the old Leupolds I was looking at. Old trusty wears a matte Nikon Monarch now with the fast focus eyepiece. Great scope but no Leupold warranty.

Friends we are!!! Like everything else, those old gloss Leupolds are bringing crazy money.

yup those old varix 2s i used to swoon over look like looking through the bottom of a drinking glass compared to the last  sig sauer i picked up a while back for a 120 bucks. comical thing is we payed that much for a vari x 2 in the early 80s and that would be probably be over 700 bucks today
