Hmmm, it produced a record amount of power for -- 5 whole seconds -- before it overheated.
Still Buck Rogers.

I just read a more recent post that was more down to earth and less rah, rah, rah.

I wonder about the failure modes. Like when the containment field collapses.

Producing lots of cheap heat is great but it still requires a system to convert heat to power. Steam is the conventional answer.

I remember when Nuke power first came out. Too cheap to measure was the claim. Irregardless, solving the fission waste problem would be highly worthwhile.

The navy has several patents for systems that power what most would call a UFO. Like cold fusion, they require a tremendously powerful magnetic field.

Ammunition is like firewood. The more you have, the warmer you feel.

The quick and dirty answer is that the fusion reaction stops.
The longer and more detailed answer depends on what kind of reactor is being used. The one that we see most often, the tokamak style, uses powerful magnets to create a “container” within which the fusion reaction  occurs. The big problem with a failure is that the heat of the reaction is released (150 million degrees F) This release occurs next to the field magnets which operate at close to absolute zero. You can extrapolate the result. Along with this, tritium is released as a gas. It is radioactive and bonds easily with water. Fortunately, there is not a whole lot of tritium involved…about 10 ounces.

Relax...Do you really think a breakthrough in cold fusion, would bring on an energy Utopia for all of us?

I am old enough to recall promises of "plenty for everybody", only to see such silly hopes dashed.
It seems the industrial revolution was the last big movement to pay off for John Q Public.

After a hundred years or so, the industrial revolution started to show benefits in everyman's life.

I can recall when silly promises were made..
Progress after WW2 would provide every family with a quality home and all the trimmings.

Nuclear power generation would all but wipe out the monthly family electric bill.

New drugs would be developed, wherein with one pill, horrifying diseases could be eradicated from a sufferer's life...(and perhaps it could.)

The League of  Nations..later the UN...would wipe warfare out of the world.

Obama & Biden said "if we would just "be nice" to the bad guys, the bad guys would be nice to us.

Lefties from around the world said socialism would wipe out poverty.

The computer age would cut the work week to a few short hours...and the workers would still collect full pay.

Democrats said lifting people out of poverty via government 'programs', would cut crime to a minimum..so they launched their "war on poverty"..

How are all those promises and programs doing these days?

Now with cold fusion, we have the pending promise of abundant and virtually free energy for everyone..  Do you really think the billionaires will allow that?

...Seems like Nicolai Tesla came up with a way for each of us to enjoy plentiful energy for a very low cost..   WHAT HAPPENED?

What happened is nobody has been able to actually make it work.  If it were possible, some visionary like Musk would be working on it.  I'm of the opinion that although Tesla was a brilliant man who pioneered amazing technology, this particular time he was either perpetuating a hoax or kept the necessary details so secret that they died with him.  I tend toward the former.

Did Tesla have a background of perpetrating hoaxes?

Possibly, noone knows for sure but some of his demonstrations can't be replicated so there is considerable doubt.

just saw where theres a joint deal between yamaha and toyota that has a v8 hydrogen powered v8 that makes like 400 hp. Maybe thats our future. Sure beats the hell out of this silly push to electric cars. Maybe they will get that techonology to the point it can power a power plant.

Anybody wonder how far down the road on one of those Michigan winter days one of those electric cars would get running the heater and the defrosters on the windows and mirrors, not to mention the headlights?

I know one fellow locally who has a Tesla..he says it is not particularly noticable from a regular gas driven car.
I asked for that reason, and his reply caused me to rethink.  He is not a man who is prone to lying.

dee if facts and common sense meant anything to these global warming conspiracy nut cases we wouldnt be wasting a dime on electric cars that we have no capacity to charge in the first place. But what you said is fact. Look at where there tested. It isnt up here in the UP of michigan. its for the most part in southern CA which is about like testing snow tires in LA. But what you said is fact. If you doubt it take two identical flashlights with brand new batteries out of the same batch. Put one on your kitchen table turned on and the other in your freezer turned on and see which dies first. It applies not only to the northern regions but the south too. See how many of those charge mileage ratings are done with the AC running. Its all just a big lie by the left. The people that think there power comes from a power fairy in the ground, not from a fossil fuel powered power plant. what we need to do in this country is get REAL. We NEED to become energy independent to be a real super power. We need to spend our tax money on our military not some welfare trash pumping out babies or 3rd generation welfare familys or inviting foreigners from any country to come here and add to our welfare list.

I'm not sure any of us here have the intellect to know whether this is possible or not. In 1945 before the atomic bombs if splitting atoms would have been discussed in public I'm sure a majority of people would have thought it a fantasy.

Well, you ain't gonna get it as long as slo jo is in charge. He shut our supply down and is purchasing it from the Arabs and Russians. Just think, energy independent and gas well below $2 when he took office and look at what it is now. For that matter look at the price of just about anything today compared to when he took office. Been to the grocery store lately?

Calling Biden a fool would be high praise. He has to be the most worthless SOB ever to sit in the President's chair and some before him have been pretty worthless but not on the scale he is.

Right now, I could handle all kinds of "mean tweets"..if gas were still $1.98 a gallon..
