Is now the time to sell ?
« on: February 10, 2022, 04:09:39 AM »
I have a lot of guns that I think should be thinned some and the one I am debating on selling is a first year production Marlin 1895 in 45-70.  It has the square lever, strait grip stock, and half mag and is a pre micro groove said to be a Douglas barreled early# B0 serial number.
I have noticed watching gunbroker that the 1895’s are going for crazy money and this one is a little rare so would probably do pretty good at auction if there are more than 1 person interested.

I own at least 6 45-70’s of different styles, trapdoors, hi walls, break actions etc. so it wount really leave me 45-70 poor.
I am just wondering what some of you think about this current madness of high gun prices lately ?
I have noticed the new Ruger / Marlin 1895 that is out is selling for at least 25 % over MSRP just like new cars ???

Should I sell it now or are prices going to continue to clime on original JM Marlin lever rifles ?

I sure got no crystal ball but I have to think prices are pretty much maxxed out now and have to begin going down soon. I'm already seeing ads for ammo with prices not a lot higher than they were before all this madness began. Since that pushing 2 years now I don't honestly expect the ammo to drop below some of the prices I'm now seeing.

Word out yesterday is we have the highest inflation in 40 years at about 7.5%.  This is not good.  Too much government spending with not enough tax money to pay for it.  Too many stupid programs, like giving out crack pipes, and paying for student loans for French literature and such nonsense that the kid can't make a living from.  To many on welfare for too long.  They should be required to learn a skill and get a job.  Only people who need help are the elderly and disabled.

Then you can think of it another way. When the cost of living doubles your guns might be your most valuable possessions. You may need them to protect the food you have. History shows that the worse the economy and politics get the more valuable guns become. Guns and ammo might be the best long term bartering thing you can buy. Bottom line is if crap hits the fan what the hell good is gold to you. Unless you can throw it real fast it aint going to put meat on the table and is a pretty poor home defense product.

Just me- I'd sit on it a while, then sit
on it some more before you get shed
of it. A decade or two ago it was pretty
simple to replace most any modern
gun with just a bit of shopping around.
These days a Marlin lever that you could
buy at most any pawn shop ( around here
anyway) for a couple of hundred dollars
is now five hundred on up for well used
and any of the big bores can't be had
for less than a thousand. If you think
you might have any regrets about
selling a firearm, I'd rethink it, then
rethink it again. Some of the new
plastic handguns or the budget
bolt rifles are still fairly plentiful,
but the 80's and older are bringing
collector's prices to replace.
If you decide later on that you want
another 45/70 Marlin, it's going to
cost you what 2 would cost a
decade ago
Good Luck

As long as Biden is President, prices will remain high.
How high is a different story.

Go to Gunbroker, if you have membership, and check prices they actually sold for, not listed but sold.
I was/may going to sell some more guns but thought -- just because they list that high does not mean they are selling -- so I did that and found I can make a nice profit on some of my firearms.

There is no crystal ball to find the peak time, but right now, if you find a buyer, is a good time.
Put a high reserve on it, and list it to see what happens,  if you decide that is a rare gun you can never replace.
