Best holster for a blued gun?
« on: March 09, 2004, 05:30:49 PM »
I'm looking for a holster to carry my new Beretta Stampede. I would like to keep the blue as nice as possible. What would be the best holster for this gun? I will use the holster in the field and under the jacket so if possible I would like the holster as slim as possible. Thank you!

After more than 30 years of experience with many different types, styles, and makers of holsters, I can 100% support the choice of a silicone suede-lined full flap holster.  That gives the best gun and finish protection of any other design, PERIOD!

It doesn't look cowboy "period authentic" and is certainly not for quick-draw, but for complete gun and finish protection, there is nothing better!

Field guns generally get "use marks" so being overly concerned about the finish for a gun of this purpose isn't really 100% expected.  That said,  a soft inside leather piece.

Tom Threepersons holster from El Paso Saddlery.  I purchased a second from a dealer at a gun show for $20 but they usually go for $65.  Check El Paso Saddlery website.  Excellent holster and lined with finished horse hide (will not shrink) that will never allow your gun to slip N slide inside the holster and buff the finish.  I believe they come left, right and true crossdraw.  Strong side draw is quickest but crossdraw is great if you spend alot of time carrying while driving.  I carried a Ruger in a Ruger flap holster and the above poster is correct that it is almost 100% protection.  I carried my new gun on an Elk hunt in the Snowy range of Wyoming and the gun didn't suffer even a tiny scratch.  The holster suffered many rock abrasions.  My $.02........................Mike

Suede lining is great unless you carry consistently where it is dusty.  Over time the dust will gather in the suede and begin to act as an abrasive, speeding blue wear.  In these areas, I've found a well formed, unlined holster of very stiff leather to be kinder.  And be sure that the maker leaves a small gap at the toe of the holster when he inserts the welt.  This allows dust, debris and rainwater (if you get caught out) to pass on through.
