Drat! Out of Stock.
« on: March 09, 2004, 06:09:17 PM »
I tried to order a .17HMR NEF through Wally World Tuesday but got told that Sports South told them that they're out of stock and couldn't tell them when they were getting any more. Drat!

I guess I'll have to keep trying. Wish me luck.

hellacatcher, they are pretty scarce around here also. I got mine only after the fellow who had put it on layaway failed to pick it up for more than 2 months after the expiration date of the layaway "hold" time. They sent him back his deposit money and sold me the gun!!! I had tried that store a couple of times in the past late last summer and they kept saying none in stock, finally one of the salesmen questioned the "one out back", after a check they were shocked and told me they would sell it to me in about a week when they checked with the guy who had placed a hold on the gun, was I happy, I picked it up a week later. The only problem was they had no .17 HMR ammo. I did find a store near me with no guns but ammo in stock. Now the ammo is available almost everywhere!!!....<><....

I have a plan for the future with that 17HMR...I am going to buy the 22Mag Ultra Rifle and then send in the receiver, forearm and stock for the 17HMR barrel.  That way I will have two sweet shooting guns and they will both wear the laminate stock and forearm instead of the plastic stock.

WNY_Whitetailer,

I was giving that some thought myself, only I'd probably opt for buying a .22lr version and having a .17HMR barrel fitted. It's just that I would rather have avoided the wait.

Oh well, I'll just have to make up my mind which way I want to go, wait for a .17HMR or wait for a .22lr and then wait for NEF to ship it back with the .17HMR barrel.

I've wondered why they cannot simply make the barrels to interchange like Thompson/Center.

Brian,

As a mechanical engineer I can answer that.   It is called money.

To make the barrels completely interchangeable like Thompson/Center they would have to tighten up the manufacturing tolerances.   Not just on the barrels but on the actions as well.   Tight tolerances cost a lot of money because the tighter the tolerances are made the higher the rejection rate becomes.   Then the action would need to be redesigned to prevent a newer barrel from being put on an old frame that was too loose.   So it is more cost effective for them (and us) to hand fit another barrel to our action when we send in for another barrel.   If they were to be completely interchangeable like Thompson/Center then they would cost just as much.   Myself, I like such a great shooting gun with more barrels available for such a low price.   Their business plan sure makes since to me.

I agree that it would be nice if they would hire more workers so the process of fitting extra barrels didn’t take so long but I figure it is a small thing for us to go through to keep the prices down.   Remember that the world operates around money.   At least in a capitalist society.

Major,

:D Thanks for your explanation. I agree about the tradeoff between money and time. I can see waiting longer so I can spend less. But, I can dream, can't I?

You bet you can dream… I do a lot of that too.

We are selling our house and moving to a warmer climate now that I have retired.     All my plans are on hold and I have nothing but dreams until I get a new permanent address.     The last thing I want is a rifle being forwarded in the mail.

Poor Man's Gun Maker

Well let's face it. H&R and NEF are the working man's gun manufacturer. They sell their products at very reasonable prices and are a great value for the money. Yes, sometimes it is a bummer to send your reciever back and wait for 2 or 3 months to get it back but look at the value for the money spent. As an alternative you have the Mossberg SSI which goes for $300 to $500 or the Blaser which goes for $2000 on up. I almost forgot now there is also tha Baikal which is priced competively with the NEF but made in Russia. When I get ready I know where my money is going. I will support an American company anytime and that is H&R-NEF. My 3 cents. :D
