No dead bears?
« on: February 25, 2022, 04:54:58 PM »
There was a short piece on the
"news " a while ago,  and I heard
them say that there were problems
with some nuisance bears causing
destruction at residences and
they'd used DNA tests to try to
pinpoint the offending bear(s)

Do the ptb not kill nuisance
animals anymore in other parts
of the US?  I can't imagine spending
taxpayer dollars for DNA testing
for an animal.  If not killing it, trapping
and relocating at the most.

Ever watched "Lone Star Law"? Game Wardens will pickup run over terrapins and take ta vet for rehab. How much does it cost the state to rehabilitate a turtle?

Don't have cable or satellite myself

I do know that TPWD personnel
were butt shooting hogs where we
used to bowhunt ( not that it particular
bothers me) and that they spotlight
culled whitetails at another place
we went. They also used to swear up
one side and down the other that there
weren't any big cats left in east Texas
and many other "secret " things on
our dime

ive complained to the MI dnr a number of times about problem bears in my neighborhood. In 20 years of dealing with it they trapped and relocated just ONE. It was wondering into a local campground not far from the house and scaring the tourists. There sollutions have been a joke. One year they gave my m-80s or the equivelent. that would chase them off for a hour or two. The next year they said no more m-80s because a couple idiots got hurt with them and gave me some explosive shot gun shells that sounded about like a black cat firecracker and the bears usually didnt even raise there head so I learned that year to just shoot the bear with them. Still didnt cure the problem but they didnt like that. then a couple years later they quit giving out those shells because they said someone shot at someones house wiht them. what they gave me was a couple of those flashing lights like they put  on road barriers or construction sites. they said the strobe effect scared them. I put one right on an apple tree in the yard that they usually head to and put a game camera up and called the dnr after 3 days to come pick up there (censored word) lights and showed him pictures of the bear tearing it off the tree and biting it. When he was done he went back to eating.

Its not like the scare me. theyve allways been here and theres no more little kids in the neighborhood but there a pest. thhey will tear up anything in your yard. tear apart garbage cans and i had one even dent the crap out of my garage door trying to get my trash and ill end with the funniest one. I came back from crop damage shooting one night and parked the truck with two does in it outside the barn and went into go to sleep. got up the next morning popped the tail gait and there was one deer. I sat there slacked jawed. First thought was someone stole one. they i walked over to the other side of the truck and it had mud on it major scratches all ove the box and two places that were caved in. A bear actually crawled up in there took a deer and drug it off. I tried following it but it had rained that night. i could see in my lawn where he drug it but once i hit the woods the trail ended. My insurance guy laughed his ass off. said it should have been on one of those tv commercials about odd claims. After that happened i told myself from here on out i handle them my way not the dnrs. Anyone want some summer sausage?? ;)

No personal encounters for me
so far,  but I've seen what they
can do as far as tearing up a a
house or vehicle to get at something
they smell.  There's videos online of
them tearing the siding and trim and
door and window frames off of a
house,  and pulling on car doors to the
point of bending them to a useless
condition to get inside to where there
was a food smell. I viewed one where
the bear tore the door off a small car
and ripped the interior out looking for
hamburgers after the people had brought
fast food back from wherever in their
car, and the lingering odor inside the
car attracted the bear.
Big nuisance rats IMO

Crazy bass akward world we live in today. Nothing means the same anymore. Up is down, Boys can be girls, and the Ladies can be men. Left is right, and right is wrong. People care more about an animal than innocent children. It cost more to take a sick cat to a vet, than we spend going to a DR. (About the same anyway)we celebrate Black history month, but Whites don't deserve one because we are Privileged and Racist. You just are because you were born that way. No one makes any sense anymore except me and you, and I;m starting to worry about you. :)

The black bears are starting to
move into east Texas ( they've
said from Louisiana and Arkansas)
and there's at least one that the
neighbor has on one of his cameras
and it dug a hole a few yards from
his house big enough to bury 2
refrigerators in. Sure don't want em
tearing stuff up like a big vandal
in a fur coat

NM suffers from drouth regularly and bears will come into residential areas looking for something to eat. If they hang around the Game Dept. traps them and hauls them off to another area. Bears share a trait with cats, haul one off and dump it somewhere and lots of times it comes back. Bears that are just a nuisance get a road trip, those that are a menace get a one way trip to somewhere that is never mentioned on the news and it isn't a problem anymore.

My wife's oldest sister lived in Cloudcroft for many years and they had to replace some garbage cans over the years. Nothing was ever done about the bear problem by the authorities but they shot and killed their little dog for running loose when it managed to escape their yard. Sometimes I wonder about the people in charge of protecting the citizens.

i know a number of people up here that prefer bear to deer for eating. Ive ate quite a bit of it. Mostly at camp because my dad liked it and would cook it. Once at camp when i was young someone shot a bear and my dad was cooking breakfast and cooked a plate of venison and a plate of bear. Everyone dug in and nobody knew and ate it up. There was two peices left on the bear plate and my dad told them it was bear and nobody would eat it. Back then we had open dumps and we all saw bears all over them digging through the trash and eating rancid food and covered with flys. Kind of turned off many. Today theres landfills and it isnt a problem but those memorys are hard to erase. Ive got a buddy that used to be on my crew when i was a lead lineman. He loves it and every year i shot one id give it to him and hed give me a deer later in deer season. When i started crop damange shooting i didnt need his deer so i just gave them to him. With the last deer i shot i actually kept it and made summer sausage and snack sticks out of the whole thing and you could use dog meat for that and not taste the difference.

Problem i have now is age. If youve every drug or tried to load a bear in a truck youd know its about 10 times harder then doing it with a deer. Especially a big bear. That and butchering them is a messy job because unlike a deer there loaded with greasy fat. Just to much work for this old man. The bear giving us trouble in the neighborhood is huge. North of 400lbs and id bet it might even go 500. No way i could handle a bear that big. I doubt my hoist would even lift it to butcher it.

DNR doesnt wat to do anything about it. As long as its not bothering the tourist they wont do much. Id hate to gut shoot one and let it run off to die. Im just not wired that way. But i did tell them id do it if they wont get it out of here. Cant get the dog bear hunters to hunt it because its to close to the roads and they worry there dogs will run out and get killed by a car. He doesnt seem aggressive but he sure isnt afraid of people either. I walked up within 20 yards of him and screemed and yelled and he wouldnt even lift his head up to acknowledge me. What i worry about is my dog going after it and getting killed or some little kid. Sad thing is the county i live in is lousy with bear but theres few deer because of its such a big snow area. Now we have wolves to add to the problem. THe dnr seems to think wolves and bear are more valuable then deer or even people. Dnr in MI is ran by a bunch of liberal save the planet idiots. So stupid that wolves were completely killed off here back in the 40s. There was even bounties on them. So what did they do? Reintroduced them and they bred like rabbits. Kill one and your lucky if you dont get prison time. THey were introduced back in the state and only in the UP and it was done by liberals hippys from the south of the state that thinks this is there playground and that dont have to have them in there back yards.

I have a news article here that says a federal judge put wolves back on the endangered list, and if a wolf threatens you, your dog, or your livestock, too bad.
About the only way you can kill one is if you have bite and claw marks on you.

we have lots of wolves and bear. I walk a trail by the house with the dog and usually carry a gun. Im not a bit afraid of bear. Ive lived around them all my life and have never had a single one even with cubs make a move at me. But wolves worry me. I worry my dog might even think its  a playmate and take off after it. Dont much give a rip what the dnr or anyone else says. One looks at me wrong its going down.

Oh I agree that they should be shot on sight if they are around people or livestock.
Killing them make them want to be living elsewhere.
Not killing them makes them a sure danger.

Some people I know believe  when endangered by a wild animal, practice the Three S's........ Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up! Keep it private and personal.

I'd hate to have to cheek swab a bear for DNA. I'd rather just assume it is guilty and sentence it to a 250 grain Barnes .348 .
