I just heard where an old cemetery
south-southwest of here was vandalized,
and an estimated 200-275 headstones
were smashed and broken. Many were
over a hundred years old.
I was at the local cemetery this
last week to pay respects
and maintain my parent's
and other relatives graves. Of course,
there were some nearby having a
party and drinking around a plot with
lots of balloons and food and beer.
Used to be civilized people had respect
for hallowed places and conducted
themselves with a degree of respectability
and some bit of solemn behavior, but
no more. Churches have to have armed
security and elaborate burglar proofing,
and cemeteries and monuments of different
kinds are in constant danger of vandalism
and meanness of every degree
