Historical note..bearing on today's events.
« on: March 07, 2022, 01:50:02 AM »
The apostle Andrew, went eastward from Jerusalem in his evangelical journeys.  He in fact is given credit for converting the people of the Ukraine to follow Christ.
Of course, he was evangelizing wherever he went..through parts of present Iraq & Iran (Scythia) and other people along the way.
He met his end in Patras, Greece..when he was tied to an X shaped cross.  ...Must have been a very slow and painful death..

Today his martyrdom is honored and displayed on the on the blue & white flag of Scotland..he at one time being considered the "patron saint" of Scotland.
His cross is also honored on the flag of the UK..being a Scotland is now part of the UK.

A touch of irony.. the atheistic Soviets flew the St Andrew flag from their ships,  and Russia still does.
How closely it resembles the flag of the UK !  The Russian ships carry 2 versions of the flag, the other being a copy of the flag of Scotland with colors reversed.

...Then there is the church of St Andrew in Kyiv, Ukraine.

This not from cannon, but from Eusebius and other ancient historians along with folk traditions.

There is also a St Andrew Catholic church in New York, a St Andrew Methodist Church in Texas , and a St Andrew Baptist Church in Louisiana, and a myriad of other churches worldwide with St Andrew on their church names.

Here is another flag with The Cross of St Andrew on it. And yes, Confederate General Beauregard designer of the Confederate Battle Flag, did know it was the Cross of St Andrew.

Shouldn't this be in the religious forums since it's of a religious nature, and religious message?

Thanks for the info on the Confederate flag and Gen Beauregard.  I was torn between history and religion, since both apply..so I placed it in the pot belly, figuring it to be general knowledge.

I don't remember where I read it many years ago, that when Andrew realized that he was to be crucified he stated that he wasn't worthy of being crucified on the same type of cross Christ was crucified on.
Thus the Cross of Saint Andrew. No idea if it was true, and don't remember the source.

As for the Confederate Battle Flag: the Cross of St Andrew, on each bar are 3 stars totaling12, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, with the center star representing Christ, the white represents the purity of Christ, the red represents the blood of Christ, and the blue the Heavenly assent of Christ.

.  Yes, there are St Andrew's churches in many places, but few that can claim to have been founded by St Andrew himself, where he preached in the mid first century.

I heard the same story about Peter, in that he didn't feel worthy to be crucified in like manner as Jesus was, and was martyred in Rome.

What we have is tradition and a 2nd century apocryphal stating such, but he could very well have been crucified in that manner..

Frankly, I have my doubts that Peter ever made it to Rome, and I am not alone.

That is why when I posted about Andrew, I specifically noted that..the story was no cannon, but by tradition and historians.
