Ruger semi-auto pistols in 9 MM?
« on: March 10, 2004, 06:44:10 AM »
I have been thinking of getting a Ruger 9 MM auto and have noticed quite a selection to choose from.  You have the  older P89, the newer aluminum framed P94, and the polymer framed P95.

From what I have heard, the aluminum framed guns are supposed to be more accurate than the polymer, but they may need an additional recoil buffer spring put into them to protect the frame and soften the recoil.  But I have heard that they have been shot heavily without this being a problem.  I found the aluminum frame to be a slightly better feel for my hands.  In the aluminum you have the full length frame pattern, on the P94, and the partial length pattern on the P89.

The polymer frames have a 2 stage recoil spring, to protect the frame from impact, and I have heard that you can run quite a bit of 9 MM +P+ into it, which would be nice for occasions where more firepower is needed.  Also, you can get blued steel slides, or stainless steel slides.  Wouldn't the stainless steel gaul after awhile as I have heard some of the high mileage Kimbers have been showing this?

Does anybody have experience between the different models to have an opinion of which they thought was best?  My need is for all around use, mostly plinking, target practice, and as personal protection for open holster carry while hunting in black bear country.  I already have a .357 magnum and a .40 S&W auto if I need more hitting power.

Thanks.

I've got a KP-95 D, which is the SS version of the P-95. It's about 3-4 years old now. I've had zero malfunctions, FTF/FTE, to this date. It will fire/eject anything that you put into it. Accuracy is quite good for a "self-defense" weapon. I have experienced no galling of the stainless steel. This gun was tested with over 20,000 rounds of +P+ ammo by Ruger before it was introduced to the public. I'd say that it's going to be very durable. I'm happy with mine. MI VHNTR

I just sold my KP95D.  It was reliable and easy to use.  I hated the trigger and although I agree it worked well for a self defense weapon I wanted something more accurate.  Being a double action gun the trigger was crap, and I wanted something better.  I had no problems with it in general, but it wasn't for me.  Hope this helps.  For what it's worth I bought it used and sold it for $75 more than I paid for it.  I have to think they hold their value <vbg>.  If only I could do as well with my investments...
