Wording aside, it seems like a logical way of thinking to me.

Putin went on television to excoriate Russians who don’t back him, even as both sides expressed optimism over efforts to negotiate an end to the fighting,

Russians “will always be able to distinguish true patriots from scum and traitors and will simply spit them out like a gnat that accidentally flew into their mouths,” he said. “I am convinced that such a natural and necessary self-purification of society will only strengthen our country.”

To me it sounds like he is saying that weeding out of non patriotic Russians is what he is calling "self-purification", which, let's be honest here, is what is needed here as well.

Most folks that are "for" troops being sent into combat, have never been themselves, and will never go. Their experience with death involves a mortuary, a casket, makeup, and the correct lighting.
But their rarin to send somebody else.

Like this "bleeding heart" for a people halfway around the world, while ignoring his own countrymen on the southern border.

OK, then I take back my words concerning you and the Wuhan labs.. 
   Some are claiming that the labs in Ukraine are holdovers from labs installed during the old Soviet occupation.  I won't take that at face value..as you said we will just have to see how it shakes out !
