More food shortages
« on: March 17, 2022, 02:59:32 PM »
I get different kinds of messages
all the time. Some halfway believable,
most are fairly whacky.
I got one that was fairly alarmist
" grocery store shortages nationwide.  ."

I thought " where have these people been?"

Shelves have been pretty empty around
here for a while. Took some pics to send
to a relative that thought I was fibbing.
BTW- the store workers don't like you
taking pictures in the store

We have had some shortages, but not quite like that !

Do you think they are trying to hget us used to how it will be if they get their communism into power.

It seems commie countries are continually having shortages..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

I have a friend who's mother is
from the USSR.
I've been told about how they stand
in line for hours to get a few groceries.
If you want a kilo of meat, that's exactly
what you would get. You didn't get to
pick and choose what cut you wanted.
You might get a piece of shoulder or
a strip of jowl. The men at the meat
counter might stand and smoke and
yak yak for 5-10 minutes before you
get waited on. You didn't just walk in
and stir through a display.
Not sure how things are there now

I’ve read where it is better now than the USSR was.

Where we are I'm not seeing much shortage. The store folks are still spending all day stocking the shelves and there are still big stacks of markdowns each time I stop, at least once a week when I go to the PO and library.

It’s not bad here either, neither is Lubbock TX which seems to be fine also.

Looks like border jumpers with EBT cards hit the place.

I always encounter a few empty spots in our grocery stores but not large ones. We seldom go to Lubbock but Sam's club has always been out of paper plates since covid stared and still were last week.

My only problem has been keeping
something on those plates   ;D

All that said,
It's really not as bad as the
people on the far side of the
spectrum say it is.
The shortages of food items are
because of the same reasons there
was a toilet paper shortage,  an ammo
shortage, a primer and powder shortage,
all of the current shortages.
People buying and hoarding and
reselling at jacked up prices
and the enablers that are willing
to pay whatever to get whatever

It has been at least 3 months since the wife has been able to find Ortega mild enchilada sauce at any of three wal-marts that she can shop.  10 Box has not had any either.  They have medium and hot, but no mild.  Wal-mart has even removed the labels for mild.

That's the bad part about all the big corporate
chains like wally world and online retailers.
You're pretty much at the mercy of whatever
whim their " buyers " think they should sell.

I used to buy a particular brand of pickled
jalapenos because they had just the right
flavor,  and they were economical enough
to buy them ready made ready to use.
I'd ran out for whatever reason, and thought
I'd pick some up at wally world when I was
there. I made several laps up and down looking
for the peppers, and I finally found someone
to ask.  He says " why no, we've never carried
those.  . " and me knowing I've been buying
the product in that very store for a couple of
years. I got aggravated enough to make the
trip back home and retrieve the empty jar
and bring it back up to the store.  Still get
the same answer. Nope,  never had em.
I found some eventually at another place.
After about a year or so,  I happened to
see them back on the shelf at the first
store and they've been in stock for some
years since.
JMHO- the modern business practices
and buying from the big box stores and
online instead of patronizing the mom
and pops has screwed things overall
for the consumer

Amazon has it available. Just go to Amazon, and insert "Ortega mild enchilada sauce " in their search function.

What is a dew berry? All we got is mesquite beans.

I have seen quite a few products on the grocery store shelves that have never been available until recently and also some brands that I have never heard of.

I’ve got 3 bottles of taco sauce mild thick & smooth by Ortega and it’s pretty good. I’ll have to try the enchilada sauce.

A friend and his wife used to live in
a fairly remote place with a bunch of
thick woods behind them, and they
had acres of dewberry vines right
there in sight of the house.
Every season they would give me a
couple of big freezer bags of those
good dewberries and I made up
some cobblers that would make you
want to cry. Scoop of vanilla ice cream
on top hot out of the oven.
Only bad thing is those dewberry
patches were about the most perfect
copperhead habitat there was in the area
