Fun with old .22 rifles
« on: March 21, 2022, 01:55:16 PM »
I have picked up some old .22 rifles to play with.

I get them for $100 or less.  Most look on the surface, like they need a lot of work, but that can be deceiving.  Actually ech i bought was a "gem in disguise", just needing some detailing and TLC.

TheSE Oolder rifles often are very well made, and the materials they are made from, would often put their price in upper brackets today.

First one was a Stevens 66B "Buckhorn"..  That cleaned up and refinished very nicely.  Accuracy was great right off, but it needed a decent rear sight.  So, I got a Marbles Bullseye and paired it ith a Fiber optic front sight.  I went to my local rod & gun club, placed some found clay pigeons @ 50 yards.
Fasily broke the clys..then broke the pieces..could easily Sadly, the Marbles Bullseye got lost somehow..should have set it with loctite.
A couple years ago, I attended a gun show and in a dealer's "junk box" found a rear sight that looked like the original for a 6B, which was missing when i purchased the gun.  It is a peep that mounts on the very rear of the barrel.
Lady said she wanted $20 for i, so i decided to try it...don't know why ,but when i went to pay, she said $15 will be fine.  Took it home..and it fits perfectly.. but I learned to like that Bullseye, so I may put another one on that gun.

I am just finishing a Winchester model 67 single shot..  It's a "long Tom" 27" barrel..   The steel blued up nicely, and the walnut stock took stainnicely, finished with about 5 coats of Tru-oil.

Took it out yesterday..and it is a crack-shot, even with the old dovetail & bead.. I will be putting a Bullseye sight & probably a  fiber optic ramp on that one.  As is, if I have some vermin to dispatch..I can do it at a low sound level with that 27" barrel and subsonic rounds.

Next up.. i have a Mossy 152K, semi auto carbine..all steel and walnut..except for the plastic fold down forestock.  I first ried it  and found it would not group as I woild like.
Even though those old Mossberg rifles were lower priced, they had a reputation for accuracy, so I wasn't about to ive up.
Looking closely, I suspected the crown may have been nicked a bit, so i recrowned the barrel..
I haven't taken it out yet, so I still am not sure..
If/when it is shooting good again, it will get some glass..  I hav ethis old Redfield 4x scope with a 3/4" tube, that served for years on my old, original 10/22..

..But those old .22 can furnish much satisfaction..just restoring, refinishing and having fun just "bringing them back"..

I should have furnished some photos, bnut don't have any right now..Here's something I found on the web..a model 67 Winchester.

I've got a Marlin Golden 39A that was made in 1959. I likely have killed a 60 or 70 squirrels a year with for more than a decade. It was used when I got it.

They say it's worth about $800.00, but I wouldn't take a thousand for it.

Those Marlin levers are a great rifle.  My eldest son, who died young, had a Model 39..which I passed on to his first born grandson.. his baby nephew, who he used to hold and who was about a year old when my son passed away.
My grandson sure treasures that rifle..

I was given a gun tinker rehab that wouldnt work right.
This local gun tinker would barter for a batch of old beat up .22's and fix them up and sell them.
This 1970's era Rem Speedmaster 552 kicked his butt.
It kicked mine from 2016 to 2019

As you can see the old codger swiped the sights and bailed on the project giving it to me.
