Interesting, off the beaten path places..
« on: April 21, 2022, 09:06:51 AM »
Perhaps all of us know of a very pleasant, out of the way local spot, that strangers may pass right by, not realizing they are even there.
In deeply wooded, hilly areas, it is easy for strangers to miss such places.
Here is a spot less than 20 miles from my home, and even though it is now a park, set aside by a nearby county..few, outside of locals know about it.
This dam is located on a creek..in some areas it would be called a river... and was used to generate electric for a narby village of about 2500-3000 people..providing very low cost power.
With the growing village and more power needed for each home, the dam became outmoded and not worth the upkeep.
Now the dam nd surrounding acreage, are a small park.  Locals catch some nice fish there, when th esalmon are running.
This creek leads down through mysterious Zoar Valley, which I have covered in earlier posts.

Another spot, about 20 miles in the other direction fom ,me is a beautiful small falls.  As shown in the picture, there is a paved country road on the left about 20-30  ft above the level of the brink of the falls.

Biut for all the trees and a birm between the creek and the road, strangers if they happenthat way, likely don't even know they are passing by the falls.  Here's a verty short video my son posted on Youtube.

Major attractions, everyone knows about..buit I like those little, almost private atreas, where one can get back to natiure..  Here's a drone video of the same falls..at a lower, but still fresh.. water level..

Beautiful places, short video.  :)

Nancy and I have many adventures.
Sometimes when we are going someplace we'll see a road sign pointing to a place we might find interesting and we'll wheel in that direction.
Life's too short to ignore those kind of places.   It keeps our conversations from growing stale.

If the dam is there, there is no excuse, especially now, not to maintain its power delivery potential.

Used to be some "wild " spots
fairly close around here.
Down a few blocks was the "woods "
where a bunch of us played as kids.
A historical creek ran through the
middle of it. Used to be a couple of
spots where there were old Indian
camps and you could find the
occasional arrow head and lots
of shards.  Belle Starr and the
James's and the Youngers
lived here way back when.
Further east there was a patch
of "woods " that was a place
a bunch of us rode dirt bikes
and it was hidden enough to
"camp out " overnight.
It's all housing developments
and strip malls and such and
gubmint apartments now
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

There used to be  a lot of 10 plus acre woods where I grew up, they are all gone or turned into housing crap.

Farmers used to let there cattle in there in the summer.

These little nooks and crannies are always fun to "discover" for ourselves..especially when few others
understand the significance.  Some are not really doiscovered until probed.
Recently Great Lakes Cheese Inc., who owns many cheese making factories, decided to relocate one of their factories to acreage about 3 miles from my home.  They bought up a 235 acre farm on the main road.
My son has a contract to send the headquarters a drone video coverage each week.  Apparently the
headquarters will keep track of progress that way.
Any way, first week that construction started..a fenced area..maybe 1/2 acre was fenced off..Indian burial site.  I doubt  the local indians even knew it was there..

No real problen though..it may become lawn or perhaps a small park/memorial..who knows?

I was told when I bought my recreational acreage, that ther was an Indian site down near the creek, I haven't yet probed about for any relics.  I presume they will still be there for my grandkids to "discover" ..

I doubt that it would pay the wages of the men necessary to run it.

I cut my squirrel hunting teeth on farmer’s woodlots.
And yes, they are all gone.

After posting the info above, I happened to be talking with my brother, who lives in the same area where we were broughtup.  He has lived in that area since we moved there when he was 10 and myself 7 years of age.

I asked him if they were still using the generating capabilities.  He told me it was shut down years ago, but if they wanted to start it up again, the cost would be prohibitive, since it is in a remote area..and some thieves broke in shortly after shut down..and stripped the place of any valuable metals they could steal.. e.g. copper etc.

It is still as remote..and still rarely visited... except for fishermen and /or local picnickers...and some who launch their kayaks or canoes there during spring melt with high water, and careen through to exit into Lake Erie..
