G, Washington was a great man and great leader, with a salient point that was mentioned by Omega.
He refused the offer of kingship...and when George III of England heard of it, he could hardly believe what he heard.
G. Washington was hardly alone however, he was among a group on contemporaries who stood in character and wisdom, far above the average.
Just as the West Point class of 1915, was the "class the stars fell upon"..starting with Eisenhower and Bradley...so our colonies in 1776 had a plethora of wise, brave and great leaders..who I personally were set there by God and Placed there to open a new land for His glory.
The men who signed the Declaration of Independence, knew full well that they were taking on the moist powerful army inthe world..and starting with the odds greatly against them!
Yet they pledged, "our lives, our fortunes and iour sacred honor".

One only has to read a few authoritative volumes concerning the Revolutionary war, to get a good picture.

2) Gen Daniel Morgan.. often credited with the single greatest tactical move in that war..a double envelopment at Cowpens...and
3) For courage, dash and elan..Gen Benedict Arnold, ...before his treason.
Still, perhaps none of them could have held the fledgling, continental army through the losing, starving years, quite as well as did G. Washington.
Some of the things which may have made him such a great leader in spite of himself, was his great upbringing, plus his unfailing faith in God.
