Downed Russian fighter jets are being found with basic GPS 'taped to the dashboards,' UK defense minister says

Bill Bostock 8 hours ago

Russia is taping basic GPS devices to its fighter jets' dashboards, the UK's defense minister said.
Ben Wallace said this was due to "the poor quality" of Russia's own navigation systems.
Russia's military hardware, much of which appears outdated, is being tested as the invasion drags on.

Wrecked Russian fighter jets are being found with rudimentary GPS receivers "taped to the dashboards" in Ukraine because their inbuilt navigation systems are so bad, the UK's defense secretary, Ben Wallace, said.

Speaking at the National Army Museum in London Monday, Wallace commemorated those who died in World War II and called Russia's invasion of Ukraine "senseless and self-defeating."

He added that there was evidence suggesting Russian military hardware was being pushed to breaking point by the invasion of Ukraine.

"'GPS' receivers have been found taped to the dashboards of downed Russian Su-34s so the pilots knew where they were, due to the poor quality of their own systems," he said.

"The result is that whilst Russia have large amounts of artillery and armor that they like parading, they are unable to leverage them for combined arms maneuver and just resort to mass indiscriminate barrages," he added.

The Su-34 was first manufactured in the Soviet Union in the early 1990s but is still one of Russia's leading fighter jets.

Ukraine has shared abundant evidence of what it says are Russia's attempts to patch over issues with old military equipment and bypass equipment shortages.

Last month, Ukrainian troops paraded what they said was a Russian drone that had been covered in duct tape and fitted with a generic plastic bottle top for a fuel cap. In March, Ukrainian troops found what appeared to be Russian army bandages dating to 1978 discarded on a battlefield.

In his Monday speech, Wallace said Russian vehicles "are frequently found with 1980s paper maps of Ukraine in them" and that soldiers were using "pine logs as makeshift protection on logistical trucks" and attaching "overhead 'cope cages' to their tanks."

Russia held its annual Victory Day military parade in Moscow on Monday but canceled the air force flyby over what it said was bad weather.

During his speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin didn't declare all-out war on Ukraine as Western officials, including Wallace, had expected. He instead praised Russian troops fighting in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine and slammed NATO and the US.[/i]

This is amazing, to me, because I have book on the past Russian Air Force aircraft, written by a Russian, and this is not that far from the lack the Soviet Air Force way back in the fifties and sixties  -- (Turkey used to fly missions hundreds of miles into Soviet Air Space because the Soviets had no way to stop it and they did it just to piss the Soviets off)
It is amazing that a country that could successfully fly a remote control Space Shuttle has become stuck in time, or maybe it is an act of God.

The naive on both the left and right are gobbling up this propaganda,  whiles the politicians are getting kick backs. What a bunch of fools.

Planes don’t have dash boards. Planes have instrument panels. Gee whiz.

Not surprising Russian pilots using GPS. Guzzi probably has one for gliding.

Jamming is sort of intermittent from what I’ve heard. The TB2 drones use GPS. Power and distance key to effective jamming.

I don't suppose some official responsible for ordering up systems, took a huge cut..and let the GPS slip through....pocketing the "change'..  Something like the Chinese tires for their trucks, maybe ?

Keep in mind, Putin may just be the wealthiest man in the world..  Even being the grand Poobah of the revived soviet union, doesn't pay like that !

You must consider the source..perhaps an aged Brit defense minister.  To be fair some folks around here use that term in relation to cars also.

HJow about a bit of historical trivia?  Back in the horse & buggy days, the sleighs had a leather or treated board wall in front of the driver and passenger.  This was to prevent snow driven up by the horses feet, from dashing all over the riders' feet &legs.
Often they were curved toward the horse on top, further helping toi deflect snow.  Such protection was also used against rain and water splash.  The faster the horses, the more the snow would fly..I know from experience.

This may help to clarify the words from the old song... "dashing through the snow"

I was told as a youth, that when "horseless carriages" came upon the scene, the maker left a whip socket attached to the dashboard..just for a 'transition comfort'..

I'm wondering if these GPS units are a workaround for unavailable GLONASS or our own GPS system? Before GPS became so popular, and errors were deliberately introduced, many commercial units used LORAN signals to filter out the errors.  It wasn't as precise as it is now, but good enough for military purposes.  On some of my military excursions we used handheld and wrist worn commercial units, still do BTW.  There were jammers that would leave us blind off and on, but we used different units to error check our position, as well as classic paper maps.  Here is an article which may explain further:

Good post on glonass and LORAN.

Most all weather attack aircraft have a inertial Navigation system. If Russkie gear like some of ours, Garmin might be easier to use.

Pilots improvising and adapting. Like Omega’s experience.

Or maybe just using a GPS receiver to fly around and see what's jammed and what isn't jammed...
.
Our helo pilots would report when GPS would go wonky, with enough reports we could triangulate a location and call for fire, problem gone.
