  We had one troop who lost control during steering and damaged a parked car, but it was only a short veer off course. 
  The M47 Patton was a bit differentthan later models, in that it steered by a wobble stick, which took a bit of dexterity.  If you don't force enough, you don't steer..a bit too much force, and you veer sharply.

   I have seen that happen, but not nearly as drastic as that tracked vehicle did.  It even appears to have scuffed up the pavement.
   Later track laying vehicles..at least ours anyway, seem to have a different steering system.

Not really much different, icy roads just make it easier to happen for training purposes, we also use dirt roads for the same training.  Heavy vehicle operators must take this training prior to deployment overseas, specially if needing to operate in populated areas.  Just like an 18 wheeler, inertia will take that heavy military vehicle in weird directions depending on road conditions, track conditions (some have rubber pads) and operator reactions.  There have been plenty of accidents where our military vehicles have run civilian vehicles over, in our first sand trip a duece and a half had a head-on with a Saudi vehicle killing all aboard, we had to fly our driver home to keep him out of legal troubles even though it was the Saudi's fault (and SOFA applied).
