It took awhile. Mail is very slow here in Clovis.  And its getting worse. It’s one of Joan Baez and i know you guys don't like her. But i always have even as a kid. The first time i heard, The night they drove old Dixie down. I’ve always liked folk music anyway.

Well I think Tony Bennett is a piece of fecal debris but I still like some of his old jazz hits.

And Joan sang it ? That was 1965 when i first heard it on the radio. She has also done the sound track for Silent Running. I’m only going from my memory not the internet. Then who wrote diamonds and rust if Joan didnt?
And i also like Gracias a la vida its not Mexican. It’s Spaniard. ( heres to life ).

It was written in 1969, she recorded it in 1971, age screws with one's concept of time, often.

Huh?

I wasn tryin to be right, and prove you wrong. It's one of my favorite songs by the band, and I thought you might be interested in hearing the original version.

Good grief. I give up. ::)

The night they drove old Dixie down

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a song written by Robbie Robertson and originally recorded by the Canadian-American roots rock group The Band in 1969 and released on their eponymous second album. Levon Helm provided the lead vocals. The song is a first-person narrative relating the economic and social distress experienced by the protagonist, a poor white Southerner, during the last year of the American Civil War, when George Stoneman was raiding southwest Virginia. The song appeared at number 245 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

Joan Baez's version peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 on 2 October 1971; it did likewise on the Cashbox Top 100 chart. However, on the Record World Top Singles chart for the week of September 25, 1971, the Baez single hit #1 for one week

The most successful version of the song was the one by Joan Baez, which became a RIAA-certified Gold record on 22 October 1971.[16] In addition to chart action on the Hot 100, the record spent five weeks atop the easy listening chart.[17] Billboard ranked it as the No. 20 song for 1971. The version reached number six in the pop charts in the UK in October 1971.

The Baez recording had some changes in the lyrics.[18] Baez later told Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder that she initially learned the song by listening to the recording on the Band's album, and had never seen the printed lyrics at the time she recorded it, and thus sang the lyrics as she had (mis)heard them. In more recent years in her concerts, Baez has performed the song as originally written by Robertson

I thought the 8 track tape turned up it's toes in '88. Why would anyone want to revive those? They had a rather short service life compared to the cassette tapes that replaced them. I don't get the wi-fi thing either. I can plug right in to my obsolete ipod that still works great or my kindle, phone, or ipad with a cable if I want but blutooth is easier.

As an aside my wife received a record player, 45, 78, or LP in  a case for mother's day. It looks like a small suitcase and even has it's own sound system although it's rather cheesy but hooked up to something like a JBL speaker it sounds great. All those old records we have stored in a closet are going to get listened to again.
