Ammo Carry?
« on: March 11, 2004, 02:52:02 AM »
I was checking out a Sportster (heavy barrel version) at a local gun shop and was very much impressed with the handy little thing & I'm thiking about getting one for squirrel hunting. What would be a good way to carry a quick secound round or two with out exposing the cartridges to dirt?
Thanks

I do real good out of my right front pocket don't seem to slow me down may be just a long time habit. My daddy would carrier his shot gun shells between his fingers could make a old single shot sound like a automatic.

For carring 22 long , I picked up a Dail a Cartiage at a gun show,
it would hold box of shell click one time one shell fall in your hand.
Never saw them for Mag's. one other thing I have thought of is get a clip for semi-auto, Then you could slid a round right into the camber with
you thumb of your off hand.  Just my 2 1/2 cents Marv.

Marv,

That's a marvelous idea. Just flick a round out of a magazine right into the breech. Wish I had thought of it. A Marlin magazine would work great for this as it is flat and compact. Any other magazine that would fit comfortably in the hand would work real fine as well.

Kudos to you, sir!

That does sound like a good idea, it would keep dirt from sticking to the lube on the bullets and be quick to use.
So who makes the least expensive mag?

I took a some dense closed cell foam 1" thick and 3" long and drilled 5 holes in it just a little smaller that the diameter of the .22 mag. rounds. Then I used 2 rubber bands to hold it to the stock. Kind of like the neoprene ones for .243 or shotgun rounds. It keeps them clean and close for the follow up shot.

On my 22mag I picked up a centerfire rifle shell holder that fits over the stock made by Allan.  I used superglue (don't know how to sew...) to shrink the holes a bit for the smaller 22 mag casings.  It works ok, but I find myself just using an open pocket in my jacket most of the time.

Yes, what a good idea.   I will give that one a try for sure.   Thank you, Marv.       :D
