  I am surprised that any therapist these days would recommend the 4 footed cane.  Those are frowned upon by almost any therapist I know.  Here are the reasons they tell me;

  1) Most 4 footed canes are solid construction..which means all 4 feet must be touching th eground at the same time.

  2) Often, in order to get all 4 feet to touch before stepping..one has to place the cane just right..perhaps uncomfortably far from him.

 3) Solid, one piece construction is bad on any irregular surface...the canes with 3 pads are better..especially if they have a swivel near the ground.

  4) I have built some small forges to be used for outdoor demonstrations, as well as a couple podiums for outdoor..usually graveside services.  Three legs beat four every time..you can almost always get three legs to touch ground, while rarely can you get four legs to stand firmly.

Hint for an all wood cane that works well...whether you find it natural, steam bend it or cut it from plywood..
Bend the top 4-5 inches, so it fits the hand like the grip on your favorite pistol.  A pistol grip shaped top is so much more comfortable than a perfectly straight one.  It is t e natural angle for your wrist to be comfortable..
I have to admit using a 4 footed cane in the house. :)
My favorite walking cane has the gearshift knob from a 1957 ford dump truck or large flatbed.
I'm making another one that will have a cue ball on top, besides keeping me upright, it'll be a good shillelagh.

A 4 footed cane can be OK around the house, since the floors are level..   That being said, when I do use a cane, it is a regular single shaft cane.  I use a walking staff, when walking in the woods.

I really don’t like canes.

Nothing beats strength training especially as you get older, when you start losing muscle. Its why so many older people have falls, and need aids for walking. Its been proven even at 80 years old, people can benefit from strength straining.  I realize that some people have disabilities and cant do any strength training, but for many ageing people the only disability they have is weak muscles.

My daughter tried to get me to come to her yoga class but if I got down in the floor it would take a minimum of two ladies to get me up.
Besides I couldn’t fling my legs around like her.:)

Just yesterday, I completed my second visit with my VA physical therapist, and I am glad I did.  He agrees that even over 80..in my case 85, strength training works.
However, I found that I may have been over trainig in some ways.  Years ago, I had a "frozen shoulder", due to heavy work and a damaged rotator cuff.
I have been training on my own, and I believed the old Army & Marines adage that,  "pain is weakness leaving the body".  That was wrong in the case of physical therapy, since if you are going to the point of pain, hyou are likely doing more  damage than good.

He fitted me with a set of exercises for legs and arm that should work.  The arm exercises are new for me, but the leg exercises have been working well since my first visit.

As men, many of our body’s have have gone through a hard life and it shows up at old age. Especially due to construction or the oil field. Farm and Ranch, mechanics, machine shops , welding, its a long list. But one good thing is it kept me from getting fat lol.

Thats good IG you started a strength training program.  Just take it slow and easy at first. Your body will tell you how much you can do and when.  As we age our muscles take longer to repair from a workout than they did when younger. you gain strength from resting after a workout as your muscles repair themselves. If you work a certain muscle to often you can be over training, and will stop getting any benefit from your work you put in. Again pay close attention, and your body will let you know how often to train.  I think for just starting. One time a week per muscle group is enough.
If you live close to a gym, its nice to be able to join and go there, instead of buying equipment and doing it at home. Of course you don't need a lot to do basic exercises Even resistance bands work. there are benefits to working out at home. You don't have to drive to a gym which decreases your chance of even going there and working out.
Right now there are lots of people selling weight plates, dumbells, etc.. that was bought during covid lock downs with people intent on exercising at home. Some of those people returned to gyms that reopened, and some just like as the exercise bikes are collecting dust.  Weight plates and dumbells are going for $1.15 to $1.70 per pound. I remember when weight plates were less than .50 cents a pound.  If anyone is interested, you could probably find some good deals on Craigslist.
The best compound exercise that works the most muscles is the dead lift. Where you pick weight off the floor. Done correctly its a very safe and beneficial lift. I used to think it was bad for your lower back, and it is if you don't perform it right. Its very safe if done right, and there are many youtube videos explaining the right technique for doing it.   The only down side is that you generally need some heavier weight to do them.  Doing squats and dead lifts betters your balance, through more leg strength.  So pick up some weights, and get rid of the canes, walkers, and sticks.

I had both rotator cuffs fixed and then went to Pain & Torture for three times a week for three months. The advise there was "to the point of pain" and slack off as you were only doing damage past that point. Celebrex made the process easier. It seemed to work for me and I still have all the motion back in both shoulders after nine years with no pain. I knew when I tore one and am very careful not to repeat that action.

The body needs to move to be able to keep moving. The arthritis doctor my wife and I see reminds us of that. Sometimes it isn't exactly fun but we do it.

I'm going to get off here and go do some moving by digging up prickly pear and hauling them to my dumpster. I won't enjoy it but am going to do it anyway.

I like trekking poles. Adjust them long and like x-country skiing your arms can help propel you.
They also function as shooting sticks.

While prickly pear sniping this morning I discovered a common garden hoe works pretty well as a staff. It was a big help getting on and off the tractor to take some of the strain off my bum hip.

I have seen those trekking sticks, and they are pretty neat..th elopp could be used to hold a gun steady for a longer shot.
Guess I am too old fashioned, when I figure.."Why should I buy a stick, when my woods is full of them"?  :D  ;D

The Amish make some nice staffs, and they aren’t expensive. The problem here is trying to find a straight branch and make it yourself.  One made from mesquite would be nice and very strong. Folks were making gun stocks out of it years back, i dont see them anymore. An old fella down in Lea County makes pistol grips out of it. I have a pair on my 1911. That old fella i bought them from told me that mesquite is very hard to work.
