Was in Laredo for the first part of this week, low 100s, low humidity and a good breeze. I was pretty comfortable working in it. Went up to Dallas and it was 99 and higher humidity. Not terrible, but definitely less comfortable to work.

It’s only 80 out there now. Grandsons coming over to mow the lawn. I think $50.00 is fair. Maybe more.
I don't know what’s a fair price. I think i should add more for his gas out here.

Just ain't right for family to charge to help you out. That is something this modern all wrong world has brought on. Never before in history I don't think has such happened. I'll let mine grow into a forest before I'd pay family to do it. I've already spent a ton of money on all of them.

In fact I am allowing my blueberry orchard and the field to return to a forest and will be glad when it has.

Our 3 kiddos never had an allowance and were expected to do their fair share of keeping the house clean, taking the trash out, cleaning up after the dogs and cats etc., helping with our garden and when they were old enough learned how to wash their clothes and use an iron if they didn't want to wear wrinkled clothes after leaving them in the dryer too long. They also were expected to help cook supper on occasion and learn how to be self reliant.

They learned about work and the value of a dollar by earning it and not being given it. When there were family projects at our home or extended family no matter what it was they were there doing their part at and money was not a part of equation then and is not to this day. Family helps family bottom line and there are no expectations.

All 3 are grown now with families of their own and they work their butts off making a living to provide for their kiddos. On occasion we have helped them out financially when they were going through a really tough time but there was no expectation from them for us to do it. We did it out of love and respect for them trying to make their own way in life and sometimes needing a hand up in really hard times if we were able to do so.

The world is a different place now compared to decades ago and not for the better. Elderly people abandoned by their children and left to their own in a time of need because the children are too selfish or uncaring to help seems to be becoming the norm.

Darn shame.

Seen a bunch of it over the years.
My mother worked at nursing care
facilities at the end of her work life,
and I was with a woman that worked
in a couple for a good many years.
Way too many people look at it like
people look at daycare these days.
It's a place to get mom and pop
out of their hair.  They're a good many
that genuinely love their folks, but
just aren't able to care for them at
home so they need professional care,
but sadly they're too few.
A lot of the ones I've seen are busy
living it up on mom and dad's dollars.
Shame to say some of my relatives
are that way

You know, when I lived in the Phoenix area years ago, I quickly learned that when it got hot, that any work I wanted to do on my car had to be finished by 7 AM or the car was too hot to touch. Just have to learn to work within the limits of the weather.

Well so far Junuary hasn't broken any records up here in the PNW.  Not that it is too cold, but no one would complain if it warmed up a bit.  Last year we actually had a June and I think some folks got spoiled as the weather usually doesn't settle down and act like summer until after the 4th of July.  Last year was a real blow torch in July and most are probably hoping that doesn't repeat.  I'll be satisfied if we have an average summer as it has been for most of my nearly eight decades in these parts.

As for paying grand kids to do chores like mow the lawn.  Ain't happening here; I recently bought a battery powered mower and I really enjoy using this new toy.  It does a real nice job and doesn't use a drop of gas, or oil.  The batteries must be made of gold, but they are useable on other battery powered tools too.  Electricity is relatively cheap up here--mostly hydro, but don't tell Joe Brandon, or he'll make us share.

Laredo was over 100 last week and Dallas 99 and humid. I worked through it all just drank a lot of water.  Northwood Ohio looks to be hot and humid this week,  I'll get it done

suppose to be in the 90s the next couple days even up here in the North. Problem we have is its like the coastal states. The great lakes create alot of humidity. So for the few days a year we get real hot weather its pretty miserable.

Supposed to be really hot here next week (starting tomorrow, Sunday) so I'm sure we'll stay home except maybe a morning trip to the range for a couple of hours.

No way criticizing Phalanx here, but my grandkids don't charge me for favors either..

First grandson... any gunsmithing or other skills done freely...inconvenient though, since he does live far away.

Second grandson..High tech stuff, professional DJ or videography free..if I should want it.

Third grandson..Haircuts free, any kind of help and a gift custom knife now and then.

Grandaughter..All kinds of love..and a free class on how to do makeup.. (She is a beauty consultant)  ;D

Pretty much goes for great grandkids too !

Of course much love to all in return and help them wherever I can.  Just seems like the "family" thing to do..

My wifes family are the only ones close, and it would make'm mad if you tried to pay'em.

As for the heat? It was 110 degrees here 2 days in a row.

I went to Tularosa New Mexico Thursday to look at a horse, and it was over 100 there. You get used to it, and slow down.

Last time my niece watched my kids/her cousins she charged me $10 an hour and then on the way out tried to tell me I should let my daughter be a little girl. I. E. Allow her to wear makeup and nail polish at 4 yrs old. That was a while back and she has not watched my kids since. Had nothing to do with the money just her trying to tell me how to raise my kids... Although I thought $10 a hr was a bit steep to sit on her ass, eat my food and spend the day on her I phone.

It was warm up here for the past two weeks, the doom and gloom babble about 100 never came but high ninties for a few days.
Babbling heads on weather forecasts act as if this a new thing , or it has never been this bad before, and so many of the population take that in as fact.

When I landscaped in Mn you could have high of fifties to 100 plus in July, bone dry or sauna humid, you just got used to it and moved on.

When I was home working in the car, I had the garage door open, South side, but had a large garage fan blowing under the car so air was always moving; in the old days I would not have had a shirt on and probably got a nasty sun-burn.

Seventies and low eighties up here for the next week.

Kinda thought it was more like that ..that you  insisted. When my grandson cuts my hair..he refuses any payment.

But often as not, I take a couple half-gallons of ice cream over for his kids to enjoy.. that way, Grandpa can sneak something in past his protests.

He did do a barber apprenticeship during his spare time a couple years ago..  While not working as a barber, after a few tips from Gramps, he is the only currently operating barber I know locally, who can do a proper military style crew cut.

Yeah it's done here as well. We ran our orchard for a good many years but we've just gotten too old and health isn't good enough to continue it. We started planting in '95 and opened to the public around 3-4 years later.

Our health just will not allow us to keep the place clean and neat as we always did so we just shut it down. I removed around a third of the bushes and the rest are still here. Us and family pick whatever we want and let the critters have the rest.

One of the families in our church has a blueberry farm.  He said on Sunday, that they at peak right now, but will taper off both in quantity and quality, over the next 2 weeks.  ..And yes, they have to share with the bears..

He said that Saturday was their biggest day ever, and they have had that blueberry patch for decades..

I have a cousin, a blueberry grower who lives about 30 miles east of me.  She has to just about give over the last row next to trhe woods, to the bruins.

Been hot here as well, way above 90 most days, but I can deal with that, but the humidity kills me, I am drenched 5 minutes into any task, and it seems to get worse once I come inside into the A/C.

It is another 100 degree day here today as most days have been this month except for a few that surpassed 100. It is July on the south plains and that is completely normal. Nothing to get excited about. I would like to find a way to capture some of it to release on some of the colder winter days coming.
