Vinyl has become popular again. I gave a bunch to my granddaughter that she was interested in. I doubt this stage in life I was going to get back into playing vinyl.

On a market some of them are worth a lot of money. Artist, condition, it all boils down to that.

Spoke with my grandson, who happens to be a college trained DJ and makes a handsome weeks pay for playing one night a (8 hours) week at a resort club..and he clued me in.  While I don't know just what the  details are..and still don't get it, there are certain qualities the vinyl brings out, that is not present in other types  of recording.

However, one must be a hyper-purist of some kind to really appreciate it...but those folks are willing to pay for
them

I doubt also that a run of the mill vinyl player brings out the best sound. I'm sure the quality of the player and stylus have much to do with it. Thousands upon thousands can be spent on equipment to gain better sound.  Then the old vinyl I have has some scratches on it so that doesn't help with the sound either, and I don't care what kind of equipment you have. Its not going to help a vinyl album with fine scratches on it.

Pioneer makes a good player. I used to have one of those stack music setup cabinets. Amp, turntable, radio, tape player and recorder. And some big speakers. It was a hit with the military guys back then. As long as they weren’t on a ship.

Probably so; unless they were handled carefully and kept in their sheaths..they could well be scratched.

While sound and sound effects are far beyond my expertise ..or my interest, I know my grandson has many thousands invested in his equipment.

back years ago i moved and had about 300 records (conservative estimate). Most of them classic rock. I pretty much after i got married rarely listened to them. My little sister said shed sure like to have them so i gave here all of them. We were talking a few months ago and it came up in conversation. She said some of those albums are worth over 200 bucks to collectors. I told her i probably screwed up giving them away. She offered to give them back. I told her to keep them. She said he wouldnt sell them. One of her sons is into music and someday she will pass them on to him. That meant more to me then the money there worth. Hes a 8 year active duty air force sergeant and a good kid.

They may well have slightly better sound if you have the components to bring it out and the hearing ability to know. I certainly fail in that latter capacity as I imagine most on here do. CDs are good enough for me but I seldom play one anymore as I stream mostly. I have an old Pioneer stack rig missing the turntable and tuner since I have no need for either. I have it set up in my garage with the secondary speakers suspended in up in the top out of the way. The main speakers were just too big to put up there. Even with the smaller speakers it will blow you out the door when turned up. Sometimes when the clan gathers here and we adjourn to the patio after the meal I will fire it up using either my old ipod  as a music source or stream music to it so the younger ones can dance and have fun.

Vinyl has a fault. It sounds it's very best with the first play and degrades with each spin and it is easily scratched. Non the less there are a bunch of 78's that belonged to my dad, 45's, and LP's sitting in a closet and my wife expressed a desire to listen to them while doing her quilting thing. Her mother's day present was a record player that handles all three speeds and can be blutoothed to a speaker or just hooked up with a cable.

I used to have a good many 33
albums and 45 singles.
One of my sorry a$$ vulture
relatives helped themselves to
the bulk of them.  I still have a
good many cassettes and a few
8 tracks and 3 or 4 4 tracks
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

All the systems that were supposed to replace records have a similar failure of they lose clarity over time.

With tapes the larger the size of tape, the better the recording and the longer it will last.
There is a broadcast museum in the Twin Cities where they are transferring video tapes to the largest format so they do cease to exist.
Film still  pictures that were not on forever formats such as black & white or Kodachrome used to be transferred with film made for tranferring for history's sake.

Recording studios, in the past, with both records and tapes always had a master used only for transferring to commercial; those nowadays that go straight digital will eventually cease to exist, or sound like old 78 records, if the second coming is long way off.

Music never moved me much, but I did notice while serving in Germany, that the guys who were really into music, were buying a couple German brands..  Grundig or Blaupunkt..
The Grundig seemed to be preferred, but was more costly.  ..But then, the exchange rate was 4 Marks to a dollar, whereas it is now about 2 marks to a Dollar.
..Plus there was the PX discount..  Worth shipping home, I guess !

The first hi-fi rig I ever listened to was Grundig and it was fantastic compared to what I had. An older unmarried guy had it and also owned the first air conditioned car I ever road in. I asked him one time why he never married and he told me he could have a wife or the mechanical goodies but not both on his income and he opted for the mechanical stuff. He was smart and I learned to develop film from him. We worked together and I was constantly picking his brain for everything I could learn.

Between my son and myself..cleaning closets and storage, we came up with more than the equivalent of 2 of those warehouse sized egg crates..(are they 48 dozen each?), packed edges up.

We gave them all to the grandson, as he is the "music man" .  Most have little use, even though the covers show
some wear.  Most were C&W from the 1960s.

Hank Snow, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline  etc.

honestly i dont even have a home stereo anymore. Used to be really into them but now the only time i listen to music is in a vehicle. Wife does at home but just uses those music channels on tv through our surround sound. comical thing to me is we used to really think we had something if we had a 100 watt per channel amp. Now the stereo in my side by side has 200 watts per channel and my car has 600 watts per channel. i believe the one in the ram is around 300 watts and thats just there standard unit. I know my 5 speaker surround sound sounds better then any stereo i ever owned. I used to have bose 901 speakers. they were considered one of the better speakers back in the day. My neighbor has a small table top bose am/fm bluetooth stereo that isnt but about a foot and a half long and 6 inches high that would blow that stereo away.

Several factors in the quality of recording on Tape recorders. One important one is the tape speed. Working in radio back in the 60's we used eight track recorders for most of our spots (Commercials) 3 3/4 speed. The original  spots we usually recorded at 15 ips on reel to reel for quality. For longer, live event programs we used 3 3/4. The quality was less important, so we could get more on the reel.
