9mm ammo
« on: July 05, 2022, 09:25:27 AM »
I’m sure this has already been addressed. Years ago i had a feeling about this under Clinton. So i really stocked up at every chance to do so. Primers also even large pistol and small,, rifle and large. Good thing ammo for my other guns is hard to find. So now i have a lot of 9MM. And 4 pistols, i do still have my 1911 with some ammo.
And my wife's 380 bodyguard.

I'm not understanding what you are getting at?

That 9mm is now the easiest to find and get. At least what i see. Unless you go online.

9mm and 7.62 (308) has never really been a problem to get, no current military ammo has.  Now price, yea, that has increased significantly lately, but if you are in need, it's available.  Can't really say the same for non military ammo, like .270, haven't seen any locally unless I would be willing to spend well above it's worth, even considering current prices.

The last gun I traded for
had several boxes of factory
ammunition with it
One had a price tag of nearly
$60.00 IIRC
That was an old tag
I saw the other day where common
30/30 brass cases were over a dollar
apiece, closer to $1.50 apiece  :o

I  have plenty of 9mm and 223. I also have plenty of all types of primers and stuff for reloading for all my guns.

I've noticed the same thing with brass prices, and not just new brass. Wonder what gives?????????

JMO-  more people are trying to shoot and load
than anytime before, and you also have the gougers
that buy up whatever might be getting halfway
scarce, no matter if it's T.P. or ammo and components
and they get online and resell high to those willing
to pay whatever.
Then , there's more people shooting semi auto
everything, and we all know how much
harder semi's are on the empties, and many
can't find their empties and that many
more never bother to look.
Then , there's the fad shooters that
buy whatever regardless of whether or
not their current setup is accurate and
functional. Sometime back, everybody
had to have Lake City brass. Then, it
was Lapua ( or something else- I think
Lapua is the thing now)
Not to mention Remington going under.
Etc. Etc.

Any or all screws up the flow

Just me-  I've not had that good of
luck using other people's once fireds
( another JMO- I think a whole lot of
once fireds that I've encountered are
anything but once fired)
The last ones I messed with gave me
fits trying to get them to properly
size, and the ones I got to work really
didn't work because they would
stick horribly after firing and some
had to be knocked out with a rod

Never minded rolling the dice on "once fired" brass when it was .10 a piece. At .50 - $1.00+ now, I look for new brass.

I guess i lucked out. Kids buy a 9mm and ammo then go to the range. I’ve watched them shoot and walk off.

Last time I started policing up brass the owner walked in with a large broom and swept it up. Kinda greedy as I’m sure he gets plenty... I no longer use ranges, only outside on private land for me.

Most every range I've ever
patronized has a no pick up
rule.  Some allow you to police
your own brass, one had the
rule of if it hits the ground it's
theirs

Same here! I have lots of public land to shoot on near me. I have a favorite spot I was at just yesterday. Practiced shooting a couple of double action handguns. 38 special, and a Sccy CPX2 9mm. I did pretty good with the Sccy, but not as well with the 38.  Also checked the penetration on some 38 special semi wadcutters with light trailboss loads. Really light at about 450 fps lol! Fun to shoot though.

I always pick up brass at our range. Sometimes people will even help. On the hunt for primers now.

I get or have gotten 90%+ of my brass from the range.  Most is college students spraying their AR's, AK's and SKS's as well as 9mm pistols.  I just pick them up.  I use a spring type nut picker upper for rifle brass.  Seems the 9mm and even 45 ACP is harder for it to pick up.  So, I use a broom.  I clean them before I size them, then clean them again to get the sizing lub off.  A little more work, but free brass.

ran out of 556 bullets the other day so ordered 2k and started on the 9mm stuff. Loading it on my 550. Pretty sad. I used to be able to crank out a couple thousand in a day. Now anything more then 400 and im suffering. Sure like it better then picking up those tiny 223 bullets though. 300 of them and my fingers are cramping. So ive just got it in my head ive got all winter. Probably have another 1000 556 to load and another 1000 9s. Then ive got a pile of 40 sw and probably 500 44 mag brass i told my brother in law id load for him IF the body holds up. I will officially be out of small pistol primers and down to a 1000 small rifle. Lots of lg rifle and pistol primers though. Thing is most of what i shoot anymore uses small primers. Looked on midway the other day and with shipping a brick of primers is a 100 BUCKS!! Wasnt to long ago and i could buy a case for a 150!! What a fool i was to convince myself i had enough.

i was given some that were 30 years old once and they all worked perfectly. I guess alot would depend on how they were stored. If its in a dry spot i cant see them going  bad. Other then those ones given to me im far from an expert on it because they seldom last more then a year here

Just lucky I guess
I've used some early 80's
late 70's vintage that still pop
off. Used some last session that
still had the dollar some odd
price tag from where I bought
them in the 80's

Enjoy that. checked the local gunshop for them yesterday figuring maybe theyd be cheaper then midways 10 bucks a 100 after shipping and found them at 11 bucks a hundred there. I have a substantial stash so ill roll the dice and hope prices come down even though i doubt they will.

9mm has been on store shelves here for a while now---if you didn't mind paying the price which was considerable to outrageous. Wednesday I picked up a couple of sacks of birdfeed at the local farm & ranch store and found the first 9mm I have seen since covid hit for less than $18 per 50 of plinking grade ammo. $16.99 per 50 of Monarch. 20 years ago I was buying this stuff for less than four bucks a box. The only change I can tell is it's comes in a nicer box now.

PS: My feathered friends just went on short rations as bird feed prices are outrageous.

There's primers to be had here, but
most are over $100.00+ a thousand

I know of a man that is a wholesaler
that I can get some for about 80
when he does have them, but I have
to be able to act immediately with
cash in hand,  as in drop everything
and go NOW
I need to inventory what brass I have
empty again and make a plan
I could use what's loaded and RTG
and not load and have something to
poke holes with until I am no longer
able to anymore

There are NO primers on the shelves here in the land of Female, Homosexual, governors in the Left coast state of Oregoon. Those queer gals are doing everything within their powers to shut us gun owners down. And so far, doing a pretty good job of it.
