Hot days fishing
« on: July 25, 2022, 07:44:31 AM »
Got a few for a supper the
other day in a couple of hours.
Went back today and mostly
lost baits.
Did get a pretty good sized
turtle.  I thought I had a good
one until I got it close to the
surface. Like to not got my
hook out of the blankety blanker's
mouth.

18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

What kind of turtle?  Snappers are tasty critters.

I'd have called it a painted turtle, but
I'm not sure.
This was a big ( relatively big for the place)
turtle,  a little over 12 inches in the shell.
Most painted turtles are smaller, usually
around 6-8 inches.  It had the yellow lines
on the neck, but no orangey color underneath.
I'd just say it was a nuisance turtle

All time personal record
8 turtles in a row
2 break offs
One bent (stout) hook
Some well fed turtles
I didn't get that good of a look at
the hook bender, the head and neck
was as big as a roll of Jimmy Dean
breakfast sausage

All painted turtles, no snappers

Landed one turtle
One broke off at the bank
One was an obvious turtle by the
way it fought, then it snapped the
line and got the hook
Ended up with 3 channel cats

Small community lake
It's only 5 miles away, so not much
expensive gasoline burned for a
chance at a few fish

Had a few small channel cats cooked up
whole. Hadn't made any that way in a
very long time. I never had a fish fillet
until I was older.  Had to look all over
H and back to find my skinning pliers.
I also found I have two pairs
instead of one. One looks unused,
so I probably bought them when I
couldn't find the others

I also found my jar of stinky cheese
dip bait from no telling how many years
ago.  The label is gone, but I can remember
it was either Bill's or Bob's catfish bait.
They used to sell it everywhere around here
and into Oklahoma and Arkansas and Louisiana.
Found some of the old ringed plastic worms
with a treble hook they used to sell to use
with the dip bait, and some sponge squares
I put on treble hooks to use with the dip bait.
I'll have to try that out next time

The only real way to test is on a hook
in the water   :D

Couple of good eating sized channels
today, and 4 turtles.
Caught both on old fashioned cane pole
fishing for bream for cut baits.
Proper dedicated catfish rig was ignored
except by bait thieves, likely turtles.
