House Semiautomatic Weapons Ban Looks Doomed in Senate

House legislation to ban assault rifles for the first time in many years squeaked by on Friday  through a vote mostly delineated by party lines.

But as it next makes its way to the  Senate, a measure advocates say is a reasonable response to recent horrific mass shootings is expected to make little to no headway in that upper chamber.

Indeed, many reports simply stated it's almost assuredly doomed to fail.

The legislation was approved by a 217 to 213 vote in a Dem-majority House. Five Democrats broke with party lines to oppose it. Just two Republicans, one representing the Buffalo, N.Y., district where a mass shooting left 10 dead in May, voted in favor.

The  Senate math is even more daunting, even in the face of calls to action that have followed the latest deadly shootings.

Consider: In the 100-member Senate, Democrats have just 50 seats, holding the slimmest of majorities when one factors in a potential tie-breaking vote by Vice President Kamala Harris.

What's more, though, 10 Republican votes are needed to bring a measure to the floor for consideration.

Republican lawmakers, anticipating more rancorous debate to come, quickly pushed back against their Democratic colleagues.

"Gun manufacturers do not cause violent crime," said Rep. James Comer of Kentucky. "Criminals cause violent crime."

"We'll continue to protect the rights of all law-abiding gun owners who safely use, store and carry firearms including the AR-15," Comer said.

Others in the GOP also stood firmly against limits on ownership of the high-powered firearms in a heated debate that preceded the House vote.

“It’s a gun-grab, pure and simple,” said Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, according to The Guardian.

Likewise, the publication quoted House colleague Andrew Clyde of Georgia as saying, “An armed America is a safe and free America.”

Meanwhile, the Texas Tribune quoted Republican Louis Gohmert: “What would do more right now than banning AR-15s would be to ban Democrat thinking in the big cities that’s allowing the crime rates to just explode.”

History, Contentious and Violent

Congress passed a 10-year ban on assault rifles and certain high-capacity magazines in 1994 but lawmakers let it expire in 2004 and sales of the weapons have soared since then.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the latest bill a "crucial step in our ongoing fight against the deadly epidemic of gun violence in our nation."

It would ban the sale, import, manufacture or transfer of certain semi-automatic weapons such as those used in recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, Uvalde, Texas, and Highland Park, Illinois.

An avowed white supremacist shot dead 10 African Americans at a supermarket in Buffalo in May.

Nineteen schoolchildren and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old man at an elementary school in Uvalde that same month and seven people were shot dead at a July 4 parade in Highland Park.

After the Uvalde massacre, President Joe Biden appealed to lawmakers to again ban assault rifles or at least raise the minimum age for buying them from 18 to 21.

But Republican lawmakers, who see such a restriction as going against the constitutional right to bear arms, have refused to go along.

If it takes 10 Republicans to bring it up for a vote, hopefully they may not have it.  There is a Democrat Senator in Montana, West Virginia, and Wisconsin where there are a lot of gun owners.

How about letting ALL law enforcements of EVERY state use Juvinile records to find these sociopaths and ban them from buying guns to start with.  Every single one of the school shooters had a juvie record.  Some killed and tortured animals (true red flag).  Some were bullies or were bullied (check further and red flag if needed.  Maybe ban them from buying guns until they are 25 or 26.  Mental illness usually shows up in late teens and early 20's.  Maybe put high capacity guns on the no buy until you are 21 list, like handguns unless you have military training or police training.  Lots of simple ways to keep guns out of sociopaths without banning them.

First and formost, allow CC carriers to be able to take guns into and to school.  Like teachers, janitors, maintenance men.  Have all doors lock on closing and have all doors with cameras going to the office.  You would have to push a doorbell and identify yourself before entering.  Even teachers if they go to their cars have to tell the office before hand and push the button to identify them to get in.  Electronics are cheap these days and should be installed.

This is a two pronged approach.  Juvie records go forward into adulthood and schools with simple locking doors and cameras.  What happened at Uvalde should never had happened as well as incompetent law enforcement not going in to stop the guy.  If they were waiting for a stupid key, shoot the stupid lock and open the door.

You mean a list? :o
That sounds exactly like a communist/socialist idea to me. How about people taking responsibility responsibility for their own safety instead giving up freedoms for such an idea that will most certainly be abused.

Anyone willing to give up freedoms, for governmental safety, deserves neither.  Ben Franklin.

This is a conundrum.  The school kid killers almost all bought their guns legally at 18.  Their Juvenile records were sealed, yet they had mental and emotional problems, acted out, etc.  This is why juvenile records should be used in background checks.  Maybe making kids wait until 21 for high capacity magazine weapons, since most were under 21.  When you inferred a said list, I mean criminals or violent people already on the no gun buy list of the FBI for gun purchase approval.  Everyone else is not on any list, juvie record included.  If a kid beat up other kids, tortured animals to death, raped a girl, or had proven mental problems, they should be on the no gun buy list as are adults, or at least have to wait 5 or so years after turning 18 and have no such record as an adult.  Keep the guns out of young parasites hands.

On the other hand 85% of gun related crime is with "lost" or stolen guns.  Not that many so called straw purchases.

90% of gun crime is in large cities and mostly done by people under 25-30 years old.  If you took out the 5 largest cities with the most gun crime out of the US statistics, we would have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Your suggestion amounts to another "gun control law", nuthin more. When you live in a so-called "free society" there are risks.

"ANY GUN LAW", is a sacrifice of freedom. What your suggesting, is MORE GUN CONTROL LAW, i.e. more GOVERNMENT GUN REGULATIOS, which always wind up being abused by none other than "the government".
I don't need the government to protect me, I need them to stay out of my life.
SELF SECURITY, is the solution.

If your idea went up for a vote, you and I would be killing each other's vote.

It all makes one long for the days of long ago when a friend and I at the age of 12 could and did walk right through the downtown where we live with real rifles over our shoulders, and no one gave it a second look.

There was no such thing as a school shooting.  In those days if you did something bad, you went to prison and stayed there for a long time.  If you did something real bad, you got to sit in an electric chair.

I disagree completely that government needs to stop gun purchases for semi auto rifles until 21 years of age. What if my 20 year old son wants to buy a semi auto? The wait until your 21 law is nothing but another brick in dismantling our 2nd amendment rights.  They can send 18 year olds off into another country to fight some war drummed up by politicians that want to make money. They sure as hell should be able to buy a semi auto.

Same reason we don't let 18 to 20 year olds drink.  They are disproportionately involved in drunk driving accidents.  Kind of like profiling.  If a majority of the crime is committed by red headed midgets, the cops should be able to stop red headed midgets.

So you think a written law stops 18 year olds from drinking?  I suppose it does about as good as drug laws work.

:)

I was issued a m-16 at 17 yrs old and even though it was illegal for me to drink I had no problem getting it. Even bought 6 packs at the bar across the street from the horse barn I worked at when I was 16.

Exactly! I had a semi auto rifle when I was 16, and I nor my rifle never shot anyone.

I was actually able to sit at one particular bar and drink when I was 16. Getting beer was not much of an issue when I was under age, as its not an issue now for underage people.  Just making a point to those that think just one more gun law will somehow do anything to stop any crime.  If someone joins the gun ban crowd from stopping an 18 year old from buying a semi auto rifle, they might as well join them on the complete semi auto rifle ban. Lots of bad people over the age of 21. Another thing is conservatives need to stop calling semi auto rifles assault weapons. Assault weapon is a BS term made up by the gun grabbing leftists. They can put the assault weapon name on your pump shotgun.

The only reasonable response to mass shooters is to kill the shooter. DRT, no trial, no examining his poor upbringing, wringing of hands, or any of that sociobabble nonsense. Kill him and be done with it.
