Wood pussy in my live trap this morn

Stepped out early with my coffee, I set it in my garden and there it was. I always dread getting them.

I'm guessin plain ole skunk.

Yep, a skunk. Called that because they make better pets than a cat after the scent glands are removed.

I have dreaded catching one in my live trap. We had a few chickens go missing, minus some feathers left, and I caught the culprit. A little gray fox. I've never caught a skunk in a live trap, but I hear you quickly cover it, and head to the nearest body of water to drown it before removal. We have an excavator. I guess we could dig a hole and fill it with water. I don't think the Kids would like us using their pool.

When I catch a skunk in a live trap I approach from the solid door side and quietly slide the entire trap into a black trash bag. Done slowly the skunk doesn't spray.
I take'em to the country, lock the trap door open and step back. The skunk usually waddled out, whereupon I either let'em go, or execute'em.

Never seen or smelled evidence of a skunk here at my place in the now over 30 years I've lived here. In fact in a life time of roaming the woods and fields here in Bama I think I've seen a total of perhaps 3 or 4 and I'm 77.

I guess I saw nearly that many in Texas in my few short trips there.

heading to my sisters a couple days ago we came around a corner and there was 2 cars stopped on the road. One each way and 3 baby skunks crossing the road. We have plenty of them up here.

I also use the black trash bag butt I also cut one open and lay it over the trap first. I know they’re not supposed to spray butt maybe it didn’t get the memo . Took it to the country and let it go.

  Perhaps youhave a very effective skunk predator of some kind in your area.

  Porcupines started increasing in my area, a bit faster than the Deptment of Fish & Game wanted, so they
    brought in some Fishers to take care of them.
  I understand that the Fisher is about the only predator that cares to tackle a porcupine.

No I don't think we have predators of them, I think we just don't have much of a skunk population.

Probably depends on where you live in Alabama, Bill. I know when I was stationed at Ft Benning Ga, we had lots of skunks in the field there. Perhaps they don't swim the Chattahoochee. LOL!

Lots of varmints in this region
now. Nobody traps anymore, and
the hides from here aren't worth
anything. Plus we have way more
lazy people in 2022 than we did
in my parents day

My buddy had skunks living under his house. They got along fine with his cats. He was worried they might not get along with his dogs so he decided to eradicate them. The shotgun perforated them so well he and his wife had to go live with his parents for a month

I get a lot of coons, stray cats and skunks. So I put the black trash bag on the trap when I put it out. Then if I get a skunk  the bag is pulled over the door end and they are put out in the woods. Have never had one spray , I do be real gentle handling them.

This makes 3 this morn, I wonder how many there are. One thing is for sure, they can’t resist a cracker with peanut butter on it. This one was jumpier then the others about the plastic bag so I took extra time, also took a while to come out after the trap was opened.

We had them under the house once. Used a gopher smoke bomb to run them off and they all ran away.

I put mothballs under the hobo shack
to discourage scorpions, but it seems to
ward off skunks and other furry varmints

I like to welcome them to one place instead of repel them from a small area. A well placed trap never sleeps and has much more patience than me...

JMHO-  I don't relocate any varmints if
I put out a trap. They can have the
wild places, but the areas I live and
have things for my sustainment are
sacred and I do away with them so
they only have to be dealt with one
time. Everybody has to decide for
themselves about that

My trap is a live trap and the if they play nice, I usually play nice. If you follow the 5 mile rule, you would never have to deal with them again. If ya can’t trap em then plan b always works...

5th skunk this morning, guess I’ve been letting my trap gather dust a bit to long. Also caught a raccoon last week and it was growling and charging me while in the cage. I had to laugh. It had no problem eating the crackers me and kids fed it though.
