Stopped by Harbor Freight..
« on: August 06, 2022, 12:09:18 AM »
I needed a new Chain saw file.  I happened to be near a Harbor Freight, when it came to mind, so i bought a  chain saw file from them.
I may as well have tried using a welding rod to sharpen my saw chain...

I use one of the cheap harbor freight
dremel type doo dads with the proper
collet and a dremel chain sharpening
stone. I can get one done way faster
than with a file

I should also add that the little stone
bit is fragile at speed, and finesse
is needed

I hav ea Dremel tool and may try that.  I was working with my grandson in his shop yesterday, and he showed me  Dremel tungsten~carbide tool e uses to cut a choil in his blades..works well..

Do you suppose a genuine Dremel stone would hold together better?

For those who are not knife makers, the  choil is a small cutout that delineates where the sharp edge begins.
In the photo, it is directly below the "eye' in this Spyderco blade.

The saw chain stones I use are
the Dremel branded ones specifically
for saw chain sharpening.
The little bits that harbor freight
includes with their cheapie tool
are pretty much one time use.
I just freehand it much like using
a whetstone with a knife.
It's easy enough to follow the
proper angle without a jig
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I have files, and a couple electric sharpeners an expensive one and one from HF, I use the HF one more often.  It runs off the plug in the bed of my Tacoma, so the motor isn't very powerful, but it gets the job done.

I use a round file. A pia butt most chores are a pia and I’m no longer working at a saw mill where the boss maintained the blades which were numerous.
