Little gray birds
« on: September 02, 2022, 03:46:56 PM »
I haven't heard anything from anyone
I know about bird hunting for 2022
There hasn't been any of the dozens
that normally hang around in the street
pecking gravel, or on the utility lines.
I'm not too awful surprised. Most of
the places to hunt in this area
have been sold and covered with
expensive housing subdivisions
during the housing and land boom
these last couple of years

The wife and I finally had a chance to go dove hunting in west Texas a couple of weeks back. Not many flights with lots of birds but it was good enough to scratch out a limit. Our youngest son hunted with us and sent our birds home with him.

Heard some really good reports from the Crane area with people limiting out in less than an hour in the sandhills.

Haven't seen any doves at all
lately. Mourning or collared
either one.  All our old traditional
places are long gone.

We have been fortunate to hold onto a place between Stanton and Midland for over thirty years now. Taught our three kiddos how to shoot and how to drive there. After moving 200 miles away years ago from there it's been hard to justify the money for the bird lease when we only manage to go once or twice a year but the memories of being there with our kiddos and the tradition we had there inspires us to try and hold onto the place as long as we can.
No doubt one of these years the place will be sold or we won't be able to lease it again but in the meantime we  enjoy it for the memories it holds when we are there.

That's good.
There's too big of an influx of
outsiders in the places I've
traditionally gone, and it's either
gone forever, or turned over to
the land speculators or the
outfitters that re-lease and sub
lease for corporate outings and
such as that.
My friend and long time hunting
and fishing buddy and his sons
just lost their excellent deer spot
for any future hunting. Although
they didn't say outright, I suspect
it was because my friend and his
family are excellent hunters and
fishermen and I sensed some
jealousy from the property owners
family that are all poor outdoorsmen
and couldn't hit a bird or a deer
if it were tied down. Hard to catch
fish and kill animals when you're
drunk/ high
Oh well.  . . What can you do.  . .
