Trying Something New For Bears This Spring
« on: March 11, 2004, 09:51:08 PM »
Instead of putting out bait this year my partner and I are going to try calling them in with varmit calls this spring.  In the past we have gone out, put out the bait, then gotten into the tree stand, in the afternoon.  Nothing would come in till after dark, then there would be all kinds of bears.  Feeding, fighting, and keeping us up all night.  Even had them climb into the tree stand with us.  Then before daylight they would leave.  We are hoping to be able to get them to come in during daylight, in response to the calls.  Also by not having bait out, if a Grizzly comes in he is fair game.  Who knows we may also get some Wolves to come in.

A lot of times this happens when you put out too much bait at once. You need to bait like crazy, and then when hunting season is near slack up on the bait to make some competition. Then the first bear to the bait gets the best of what you put out, and leave the leftovers to the bears that don't come in till late. They will most likely start coming in before closing. Works good most of the time.

I don't have a lot of experience calling bears but I have read a lot on the subject.  One of my students last fall took a black bear using a fawn bleat.  I have also heard of rabbit squeals working and cub calling http://www.gamecalls.net/huntingproducts/bearcalls.html.

So it does work.

Watching a show on the Outdoor Channel this winter one guy was melting marshmallows with berry jello in a frying pan and pouring it over a stump.  He claimed it drew them from miles. from watching the bears in the video eating the stump it looks like he was on to something.

Sourdough - Just a word of caution - be very very observant while using a call, my hunting partner was using one for coyotes when a black bear showed up behind him   Luckily both of them were surprised and took off in different directions! A .222 isn't a great bear caliber! He's also had this happen with a bobcat which was perfect for his .222  :)  CEJ..

CEJ: Believe me, after calling in a Mountain Lion in New Mexico, I now watch me back.  I'll be calling from a tree stand.  There will be two or three of us in the stand.
