Sorry to hear of all the carnage.
The sad thing I've seen is the
many along the gulf coast that
treat hurricane warnings and
advisory bulletins as if it were
a movie or something and it'll
and go away when you push
the remote control

Should have also added- there's
many similar but a little different
of those here, except with the
tornadoes and floods.
Every year they spread the word,
and every year the authorities
have to do dangerous rescues,
and try to recover bodies of
those that know better than everybody
else

Living on a peninsula with the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico as its western border has its perils. I doubt I could afford the home owners insurance premiums to live in such a place.

  My heart goes out to you guys..but I stand in respect how some can still keep a wry sense of humor when
  faced with such peril to life and property.

If it is "Our Time", and we don't think so, the beer and sarcasm are a hedge against the pain.
We've been here and done this countless times.  Perhaps that callousness will one day be our end.
Localized flooding, strong wind, power outage, and downed trees are the known unknowns.
Tidal surge, tornados, and missile hazards are the unknown unknowns.

Our spetic tanks (2) and drain field are currently in standing water for the first time.  The toilets do not flush.  It is assumed the "grass will grow greener" after the stormwater receeds.

I wouldn't live there if I could afford the premiums. The wind blows hard enough for me here on the south plains and I will never have to contend with flooding.  ;D

       Some here say, "I wouldn't live in Florida, because of the hurricanes".  They should stop to think, each area has it's challenges.  Think of the various challenges, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, blizzards, drouth etc, etc.

   Her where folks are saying same about Florida, we have the challenge of blizzards and snow storms..perhaps they have short memories.  Photos below from the blizzard of 1970;

  Starting at top;

    1)  Lake effect blizzard, arriving across Lake Erie (I believe taken from top of Buffalo City Hall)

   2)  About what my road looked like when I got plowed out, after 2 weeks.

  3) C-130 arriving on plowed runway, bringing troops an equipment, (Note: people nearly standing on car roof.)

  4)  Saving the roof of a house

  5) typical of drifts on country roads

  6)  cleanup weeks a couple weeks later, find the hidden vehicle (may have to enlarge)

  That storm covered much of northeast..but the heaviest was off Lakes Erie and the eastern end of Lake Ontario.

  When conditions are just right..   A rather warmer day and lakes are giving off much water vapor, suddenly a very
   frigid cold front sweeps across, changing all that water vapor to snow, and blowing it onto land to the east.

   Many folks, stranded in their cars and covered with snow..fell asleep..forever.  Some discovered by search parties, some by snow plow or rotary snow blower.

  1) Map of the blizzard..dark blue shows deepest snow.

  ..And there is no way of knowing, we could have a repeat this winter..

  2) Home covered with snow.

  3) Even Boston got it's share, here is interstate there.

  4) Hey look...we found a bus.

  Do you have a water supply?  Even if you come clear through the flooding, watch the house closely for mold.

  I say this, because my brother, living in Bridge City, Texas..went through Hurricane Harvey quite well, because his home set up an a small "island", just enough to keep him out of the flood.

  However, some weeks after the flood, he commenced to be getting sick..and soon died, because unknown to him,
  his home became infested with the black mold..in places where he did not see it.

  Now that so many millions are without electricity, I'm not going to ask how the Tesla drivers are doing...

How are you today Land owner?

As noted...
We have localized flooding and had strong wind, power outage, and downed limbs.  Our toilets do not flush.

Currently...
Showers cannot be taken and that is going into its 3rd day today.  Alternate bathroom procedures are in place. We're off to church this morning for most needed showers in their facilities and change of clothes.

Our future is bright, which we cannot say for our known and unknown friends along Florida's West Coast and throughout the center of the State who have had their futures wiped out.   Total losses by wind, tidal surge, and continued flooding.

Comes now the Carpet Baggers, the Con Men, the underhanded and unscrupulous Contractors, the turn-a-quick-buck Rip Offs, and probably the most insidious...the Insurance Agent.  When homeowners make a claim on policies without a previous claim, paid in premiums over multiple dozens of years, the Agent says, "It's not covered!"  If they have no Flood Insurance, their insurance companies are not going to cover their losses.

I think the thing for them to do is each set fire to the other's remains of their homes and then claim fire damage.

and you live in the banana belt compared to here. I remember a storm in the early 70s when we had to tunnel out of our garage and drive the snowmobiles up to the top of the snow and the local grocery store owner had to tunnel into his store. The side roads took 2 weeks to get opened up. what i remember most about it was dad sent me to the store to get a few essentials and coming up on the top of the snow the whole neiborhood was basicaly gone. All you could see were the peaks of the roofs and the smoke comming from the chimneys. Add to that the day we tunneled out it was 19 below zero. They even had to close two runways on the air force base because they couldnt keep up with the
 plowing. Base was on full alert for those 2 weeks and nobody even the civilians could leave there jobs. Still its nothing compared to the devastation those hurricanes bring. At least we eventually go plowed out and shoveled out. then spring came and we still had a home. I dont even recall anyone dying because of it. For the most part up here people are used to lots of snow and cold and are prepared. I dont even bitch. We average a bit less then 300 inches a winter. Some places in the UP can get near twice that much. One town about 70 miles from here that we snowmobiled to alot got lake effect snow about every day. So much so that ive snowmobiled in short sleeve shirts in late may. and one year we still had enough snow there in june to ride. cold and snow can be delt with and even made into recreation. 150mph winds have no redeeming qualitys.

Kamala Harris said they should prioritize relief from the government to minorities and women.  The FEMA director said that is wrong, and that she wasn't the one to make that decision.

L.O.

So what about these rumors of FEMA and the military going after each other in Ian aftermath zones...?

I hear silence.  I do not listen to the Local Broadcast News and until I saw your question, I knew nothing of this.  No one in my County is talking about it on Nextdoor or FB, so I think it is just a rumor without substance.

Reuters posted an interesting map of Ian's rainfall (the "plus" part after 8 inches is questioned for a reason discussed below):

I think Reuters used partial data as the linked article appears to me as speculative with regard to the storm track.

Ian has been called a "500-year" event.  For clarification, a "100 [500] -year event" does not mean it will occur exactly once every 100 [500] -years, or that it will not happen again for another 100 [500] years.

The "100-year event" statistically describes the CHANCE of an event in ANY year equal to 1 chance in 100 or 1.0%.  Similarly, the 500-year event is 1 chance in 500 or 0.20%.  The US Gulf or Atlantic coastline could experience (say) three (3) 100-year events in a single year - EACH event independent and measured in the AMOUNT of rainfall per event.  Let's hope not though.

The AVERAGE 100-year rainfall amount in 24-hours is 10.9 inches with a 90% confidence interval between 8.34" and 14.4".

The AVERAGE 500-year rainfall amount in 24-hours is 15.2 inches with a 90% confidence interval between 10.6" and 21.6".

https://hdsc.nws.noaa.gov/hdsc/pfds/pfds_map_cont.html?bkmrk=fl

It is noted that both the 100-year AND 500-year 24-hour events have overlapping rainfall amounts within their respective 90% confidence intervals (namely 10.6" to 14.4").  This is not problematic, only coincidental, like Kamala's Venn Diagrams. The actual flooding characteristics are a considerably greater indicator of rainfall and will be reverse engineered in the weeks and months after the storm for a "bell-weather" (clear) understanding of Ian's cumulative rainfall.

Check out the State's river gages.  https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/forecasts.php?wfo=mlb  Deep Purple means MAJOR Flooding, as many gages exceed their historic recorded flood stage along the storm's path.  Ian was a MAJOR storm event.

Hold your cursor over the gage node on the linked map and that gage will pop up.  The gage just below me on Lake Harney, GENF1, has quit working, was still rising on Friday afternoon at 11.71' NGVD '29 datum, and was expected to continue to rise to 12.5' tomorrow afternoon (for 5 DAYS after the event passed) before receding over the next two weeks.  That's a LOT of water!

Today, the FDOT closed the State's highway, SR46, between Geneva and Mims due to flood water overtopping the roadway.  The last time this happened was 2008, when the highest flood record was set following Tropical Storm Fay, not even a hurricane, which dumped 20+" of rainfall in 24-hours.

NOAA (https://www.weather.gov/mlb/ian_rainfall_totals) says NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center recorded 15.2" of rainfall in 3-days.

Other recorded 3-day rainfall totals:
Titusville ==== 14.2"
Port St John == 12.92"
Counties
Orange ===== 17.24"
Osceola ===== 16.43"
Seminole ==== 16.10"
Volusia ===== 21.09"

The NOAA 3-day average rainfall, 90% confidence range, in Florida (for comparison):
 100-year average 14.5"; range 11.3" to 19.0"
 200-year average 16.9"; range 12.6" to 23.0"
 500-year average 20.6"; range 14.6" to 28.9"
1000-year average 23.7"; range 16.1" to 33.4"

IDK where to find Florida West Coast County rainfall from Ian.  I'll keep looking.

In 2008, Tropical Storm Fay dumped 27.65" of recorded rainfall in 3-days at the Brevard County NWS Center in Melbourne, FL.
