Is there a NEF Rifle Shortage?
« on: March 12, 2004, 11:01:54 AM »
Is it just where I live (Virginia) or the time of year, but i have been to the 3 closest gunshops to my home.  Not one had any NEF rifles in stock.  Was told about 2/3 of the models in the catalog just cannot be had.  any insight to this?  Thanks, Grampa Mike

I've been seeing the same thing!....I've been trying to buy a Sportster in 22LR, and none to be found..... though there seem to be quite a few in 17HDY around.....
I ordered one (22LR) from a dealer who sells a lot of NEF's, more than a month ago.....Today they told me that they just got in a 10ga that they ordered in December.....saying that getting anything not already in the distrubutors warehouse seems to be very slow.
What caliber/version are you looking for? I found a site this AM that seems to have the BEST mail order prices on NEF's, and have a lot of them in stock!

That site is :   http://www.gunrush.com

I may still consider ordering from them, though I did put a deposit down for the Sportster.....They have the youth version of the Sportster in stock. I was going to replace the synthetic with wood anyway.....

Sorry to be so cynical but a lot of dealers simply don't want to carry any inventory now because its inventory tax time.  And, rifle sales tend to drop after deer season and Christmas.  IMHO, many are too quick to make an excuse rather than tell it like it is.

I can't get a Sportster either.  It may be that the distributors are holding off on stock as well as some dealers.  My local gun shop has been getting in tons of other rifles, but no NEFs.

Seems like NEF/H&R have almost a perfect thing going.  They sell all the guns that they manufacture or very close to it.  That means more money for them or lower cost to us if they don't have to warehouse the firearms.

Thanks ...
OffHand35 I have a list of 7 NEF rifles that I wanted, told dealers I would buy any one of the 7 that he could get.  1st was the 38-55 Target Model.  One dealer took my list and checked, said he could not get any of them.  Very depressing.  Grampa Mike

The only shortage I've noticed, is in my safe.  I haven't had any problem ordering any one I had picked. After all the talk last year about the unavailability of the BC, I thought it would be a problem, but it wasn't. My local dealer usually doesn't carry many models, just the 17, and the huntsman. It seems he can get anything I order. My BC came right from the factory, based on the UPS label.

It seems that they come in spurts. I have been in three stores in the last month all had 30 30s and 30-06s but nothing else before that it seems like 7mm-08 where the thing for them to have. :?

:-) Thanks, Ganjiro! The prices & stock at BudsGunShop   look very good!
Add shp & FFL cost, and it comes out to about the same as my dealer's total cost.....If I can get my deposit back, I may buy the SS1-022  from them.

Well I have been told that most gun manufactures make their guns in batches once or twice a year.

That is they set up for one model and caliber and run what ever amount they have decided to make.  The guns are then sent to the gun distributers and the gun distributers warehouse them for the dealers to order from.

When the pipe line is empty there won't be any more of that model and caliber until the manufactures set up to make another run of them.

I don't know if this is a fact or not, its just what I have been told.
Happy shooting, may you hit what you aim at.

I haven't seen any at all in any of the stores around here. I don't think there is a great demand for them in my area. I guess the guys want more than one shot or feel that they start beginners out on a single shot. If you want to look like a seasoned hunter, you have to get a repeater rifle. Hmm?? My friend has an NEF in .223 and can't miss a woodchuck to save his life.  :)

this is actually the time that production beefs up. Everyone getting a tax return and looking to buy so they want guns out to buy. The bad season is end of December to mid february everyone wants inventory down for taxes.

Thanks 10ga and Ganjiro for the web sites.  I have good news, my girlfriend is in West Virginia visiting her mother.  She went to a local gun store there and found 2 of the guns on my list and bought them for me, not the 38-55 but the store owner said he will find one for me.  Life is grand...

Marv you are right about that.  She likes to shoot too, but she likes reloading better.  She 5'2"  115 lbs and can walk/work all day.  Spends her free time in the wood shop.  I was very lucky to find her, still not sure what she sees in me.  Life is grand....
