Robert Strange McNamara should have been the one in prison.

YEP!  If for no other crime in that he tried to save about $2 per M-16, by not chrome lining the barrels.  How many GIs and Marines
died, because their M-16s jammed in the humid jungles?

It wasn't the lack of Chrome lined barrels, or humidity that caused the Vietnam era M16s to jam. It was the military trying to use gun powder with a burn rate designed to operate the M14.

I  knew when I typed it..I would receive correction.  Yes, the ball powder replacing the flake powder, was the primary reason for failures, but the lack of chrome lined chambers also contributed.  The reason why I only mentioned the chrome lining was because it was McNamara himself who insisted on saving a couple bucks by omitting the lining.

   https://gundigest.com/gun-reviews/the-ar-16m16-the-rifle-that-was-never-supposed-to-be

   From the article...

" Many parts were changed to more stringent specifications to help deal with the higher pressure curve and harder impact. To solve the chamber corrosion and failure-to-extract issues, all future production rifle barrels would be chrome-lined. Even though chrome-lining barrels is a military specification, Ordinance failed to require this basic requirement on the AR-15/M16 rifle system.
Chrome-lining the barrels gave three major improvements to the standard barrel. First, the chrome-lined barrel was corrosion resistant. Second, chrome is slippery in nature and assists in extraction and ejection. When chromed, the walls of the chamber are harder; sand and mud don’t “iron” into them. Thirdly, chrome is 2 to 3 times harder than standard barrel steel so the barrel lasts significantly longer.  "

In 1968 I found myself standing in the Dallas Texas induction center in my underwear and socks taking a physical.  :-[

chrome lined chambers did help with reliability. but like was said the powder was the main culprit and add to that the troops were just handed the gun with no cleaning supplies or at first even cleaning instructions. A chrome lined barrel only helps slightly with longevity. but it was the powder residue and over oiling that turned it into sludge that cause the real problems. a man i respected very much told me if your using more them 4 drops of oil to lube an ar your over oiling it

When my second child was born that lowered me to a 3A classification. My wife's younger brother was drafted and when he came home he said everyone should have just gone to Canada. It was a war we had no intention of winning and fought for nothing as proved when we cut and ran.

Had an uncle with 2 tour, and a cousin with one, say the same thing. I  had a horse fall on me,  and I failed the physical.

sounds good but then youd have to live with it knowing maybe if you were there even one other soldier might not have died. Isnt to many wars that soldiers in the field fight for a cause, just or not. they fight for to stay alive and to make sure there fellow soldiers stay alive. Was is always political. Ran by politicians that dont have the balls to stand in the line of fire themselves.
