Electric windows.
« on: November 06, 2022, 09:37:48 AM »
Dang thats almost Rocket science. All this weird sh*t in a door you can barely get your hand inside there. Window wouldn't come down,  then it went down half way and stopped. Wont budge.

I didn't need or ask for electric windows...one of many things I would rather not have and keep the money in my pocket !

Depends on the make of the
vehicle. I know the older Fords
had a sheet metal window
regulator that was nearly bulletproof.
Usually the gear rollers in the
motor would crumble, and you
could buy a gear kit and fix
it relatively quickly.
After they went to the cable
set up, they changed the motor
configuration and there's no
serviceable parts in the motor
now. You'd just as well to buy
the regulator and motor both
since either one is subject to
failure at any time.
You may want to also be
particular about the usage of
the switch and use lots of
finesse. Many of the failures
of electric windows are from
holding the switch too long and
jamming the window one direction
or the other. Light touch.  Light

Good Luck

I took the door panel off and omg! One of those wire spools came apart and that stainless wire was everywhere. I managed to get it out but i couldn’t push that glass window up and back in the tracks.  When I was trying then window exploded and small bits of that glass everywhere. If i got it up i was going to glue it in place and forget about it. Winter is coming and i was going to mess with it next spring. But in now have a window wide open.

Lubbock has a place who works on them.  They put in some kind of a  kit thats less complicated, takes two days.  I see all these other vehicles with cardboard taped over it. Can’t do that on a front widow and drive. And this was the drivers side.

I work on my vehicles, but sometimes it pays in time and frustration to let someone else do it. YMMV.

If they are charging for two days labor you are getting ripped off. Look elsewhere. If they say drop it off and pick up tommorow? That makes sense.

It takes a day to get the window, four hours to put it in. Or that’s what they say.

Well, there's nuthin like old Lincolns, fitted with equally old Lincoln parts. "Classic" Chevys, and Fords are pretty straight forward.
Old Lincolns, and Cadillacs are complicated, and expensive. Even the windows.  ;)

Reminds me of a conversation I had back on the 25th of August, when I  said: A 20 year old Lincoln Town Car. Parts for repairs, AND LABOR equals VERY DEEP POCKETS, or a future  "yard ornament". 8)

All the wiring, all the electrical switches, all the electric motors (windows, air conditioning, heating ducts, ect),  electronic ignition, and other electronic components, are all 20 years old.
SO! You still have dozens of 20 year old switches, motors, and electronics to look forward to replacing. YIKES! :D

Time to pay a professional and quit dicking around...

It always costs more to fix a vehicle after
somebody has tried to do it themselves.
You have to fix what they did, then do the
regular repair that they tried to do unsuccessfully.
It's that way for everything, not just vehicles.
At the dealers I've worked at, it was usually
electrical problems from people having
alarms and/or fancy stereos installed at
one of those fly-by-night shops

Price parts and labor for a Lincoln, or Cadillac.  :-\

had some problems up here in the winter with power windows back in the 70s and 80s but not a single problem with any of my 90s and up trucks or cars. Like ranger said the old ones could fail if you kept your finger on the button to long to often or tried to hard to get them to open when they were froze (which they did do back then often)  but the new ones have auto stops in them so power is cut at full travel. I like turning my own wrenches but window work i leave to the pros. Most body shops and glass shops will do it and they have the proper tools to work on them.

I could trade it for a crown Victoria, across the table. Rather have those other problems. Although the Lincoln is a nice car.
But it is 30 years old, but dont look it at all.

Daughter 7 year old minivan drivers window regulator took a dump over the summer.  I managed to get the cables back in their track and the contraption back together and put the window up before disconnecting the switch so it wouldn't inadvertenly or even though you tell them a million times not to do something "I  didn't know ---- would happen".  Ordered a new OEM window kit and installed it when it came.   Seems wasteful to have to replace the entire kit when it was a $0.50  plastic spiral the cable winds around that wore out.

Anymore most are parts hangers, very few fix the part now. I’ll sometimes fix the part but more often than not I’ll replace the part.

My 2000 Pontiac had the driver's window quit and GM replaced the motor under warranty. Only electric window problem I ever had except for an "88 Caddy that broke a little plastic part twice that you had to get it from Cadillac as no one offered an aftermarket one and Caddy was very proud of it. I did both myself.  That is it for the around 50 years I have owned vehicles with electric windows.

No not at all, they are waiting for a part from Napa and it takes an afternoon to fix it after that.  So far under $400.00.

I have PU's both ways, my newest PU has electric windows.  I think the electric windows are now reliable enough that I will never again have wind up windows!!

My wrangler has cranks on the doors. I regard them just like I do stick shift transmissions--obsolete. Since I seldom ever roll down the jeep windows I can live with the outmoded style of opening and closing it's windows.

Most times the problem lies in contacts. Wire breakage or otherwise. Can be a pia butt, what in life isn’t?

Depends
There's a good many "problems "
that are customer caused.
Liberal use of armor all has caused
a good many switch failures, and many
radio repairs were brought about by
customers spillage of coffee and
cold drinks sloshing out into the
works of the radio itself. I've seen
and heard that from many of the
radio repairmen. They're not made
to function full of sticky gooey
mess
I'll always remember one long time
radio repairman saying that center
console cupholders were the best
job security addition that automotive
manufacturers ever added
