Fly-Rod Fishing

Now I was given a bucks-up fly=rod, some one died and she did not want it, never used it and never will, but I am watching Outdoor Wisconsin on PBS.

I never associate fly-rods with anything but trout, but on this show they were on a river-lake, river runs through it, and they caught small and large mouth bass and a couple of Northern Pike.

Any of you ever fished with a fly-rod for anything other than trout; I am too old and lazy to learn (a good friend does do fly-rod fishing) but I still find it fascinating.

I've used fly tackle with the classic
cork poppers and sponge spiders
on these places around here for
bass and bream.
Buddy's youngest son used one
in SE Louisiana trying for reds and
trout. Don't know how successful
he was.  Lots of people go saltwater
flyfishing for very large fish

I've never been willing to go too
deep down these outdoor gear
rabbit holes like a lot of people do

     I love to get a big  daddy bream on a fly rod , although  where I fish the drawback is having enough room to cast without hanging up in trees . admittedly a regular reel-rod & live bait  is better if you fishing to fill up the ice chest .

Yeah, I never did the classic new
england/western rockies fly fishing
where you fling the rod back and forth
to pull the line out for a cast
It's always the strip off line and
roll cast out.  I've done similar with
an old cane pole, and probably did
as much crappie jigging with a fly
rod as anything. Most recently used
a fly rod and a length of mono line
with a 1/32 jig around a fishing pier
to catch small bream for cut baits
for catfish

caught lots of bluegill on a lake by my dads with fly rods. Sunfish too.

I sometimes use a fly rod with an underspin reel to fish in my pond for whatever bites. Might catch, bream, bass or catfish on it.

A silver or a red salmon on six ounces of fly rod will get your attention.
Come Spring, I will be trying my luck with a a centerpin rod and reel. Similar in a number of ways to fly fishing different in as many other ways.
First I have to get through Winter.

Fly rod casting foam rubber spiders or small poppers  will take bluegills, smallmouth bass, and rock bass.  Lure size will, in part, be determined by rod length and line weight.   The line weight the rod is designed for is generally printed on the rod shaft near the grip.

Yep, hanging a little open face spinning reel on a light weight fly rod really makes sunfish seem big when you hook one and a real rasslin' match with a little larger bass.

Quite a few years ago the local country club had a nine hole course and a lake about the same size behind it. I had a two man bass boat and my son-in-law, his son and daughter, just kids at the time, and I would put it on the lake and go fishing. There were a couple of large catfish in it we named ol' yeller and blackie because of their colors and they would grab a lure every now and then and drag that boat around until the line parted. We caught a lot of black bass and blue gill , big ones and released everyone of them. The state record bluegill, almost 4 pounds, came out of that little lake many years ago. One of the local doctors, long retired and moved to Dallas, wore chest waders and fished the edges of the lake and caught lots of bass on a fly rod. Now the lake is gone and an eighteen hole course replaced the whole thing.

Yes.  Years ago Shakespeare made a closed face reel specifically to mount on a fly rod.  Model ?1850.  There were similar earlier models as well.  The ?1850s were favored by steelheaders of the day because it had a good drag.

Shakespeare. among others, manufactured Automatic closed fly reels you strip the line as you cast and press a lever to retrieve. fighting the fish was complicated because the line was enclosed and could not be palmed.
