America's largest furniture maker closes up before Christmas..
« on: November 25, 2022, 03:24:43 PM »
Just before Christmas?!   Very peculiar.
.
America's largest furniture manufacturer closed abruptly....

Lane furniture suddenly closed it's doors with no prior warning and fired all 2,500 employees in manufacturing without prior notice. There were no impending suits or contract disputes. Either an enemy bought them out and closed them to further wreck the country or something huge is on the horizon that the management was aware of. Maybe they did not want their resources and employees re-appropriated for war? No one knows.

HIGH POINT - United Furniture Inds. has terminated all employees. The company, which has operated under the Lane brand in recent years, sent an e-mail, overnight, that immediately terminates all employees, with the exception of over-the-road drivers currently out on delivery.

Furniture Today obtained a copy of the email sent to employees:

"At the instruction of the Board of Directors of United Furniture Industries, Inc., and all subsidiaries (the "Company"), we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances the Company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on November 21, 2022, with the exception of over-the-road drivers that are out on delivery. Your layoff from the Company is expected to be permanent and all benefits will be terminated immediately without provision of COBRA.

Over-the-road drivers that are out on delivery will be paid for the balance of the week. Whether or not you have completed your delivery, please immediately return equipment, inventory, and delivery documents for those deliveries that have been completed to one of the following locations: Winston-Salem, N.C., Verona, Miss., or Victorville, Calif. location. To be clear, do not complete any additional deliveries.

I'll bet the Biden Regime was gonna turn that furniture manufacturer into a "missile factory, and give all those missiles to the Ukrainians.
Now they'll likely be a nation wide "recliner shortage". :o

when we built our new house last year we needed furniture. There were shortages everywhere and prices were high. best deal i found was with ashley furniture. Order 4 rooms of furniture then it got delayed and when I asked i was told that it was because of those shipping jam ups on the west coast. I asked them where this furniture came from and the customer service rep didnt even know or was ashamed to say. I canceled the entire order and went to a local ahmish furniture builder and had him make it. It cost probably half again as much but was excellent quality.

Bottom line is companies like lane are dying because nobody gives a rats ass about buying American anymore. If you truely felt for those workers loosing there jobs youd look at the THOUSANDS of Americans who have lost there jobs. Whos fault is it? Its not only the government which support all these importers but its also equally each and everyone's fault. The real sad thing is when my dad was young you really could choose to buy American. Now the imports are so implanted in our economy that you cant avoid it.

Good luck finding an American made TV or about anything electronic. Good luck finding a American made car or truck that the money off of its production stays in this country. WE allowed that to happen in OUR generation. Those poor people having to go home to there familys with this terrible news can blame US just as much as any politician.

Its not one bit different then energy independence. If we dont start producing AMERICAN products and actually BUYING them instead of imports this country will just continue to get weaker and eventually fail. Problem is this country is ripe with the sin of GREED!! Let my neighbor buy American and ill buy what's cheaper.

Yup im a hypocrite. I look around me and see crap made in china and japan. Pretty good chance this laptop im tapping on was made in one of those countries as was the tv in front of the living room. But i do make a effort to buy as much American as i can and if someone would again produce an American made tv id buy one in a heartbeat.  But that wont happen because not 10 percent of the country would be willing to spend an extra 100 bucks because it was made here. Sadly its not one bit different with a recliner

Let's face it guys...we know why Biden & Co, are shunting our businesses off to China, the Hunter Biden laptop explained it quite adequately.
I doubt Lane was paying him up to a 20% commission.. ;)  ;D

Really odd how this company closed with just sending a text message to employees to not come back to work?  They did some restructuring back in June with a couple CEO's.  Really strange how they just up and shut down laying off 2700 people. Their retailers were not even contacted. Furniture today had this in their news article.
Furniture Today has contacted several Top 100 furniture retailers to see if they had been contacted by the company. Those responding thus far have indicated they received no advance notification nor any communication from the company as of this writing.

Lloyd hit the nail on the head and it all started when slick willie sold our manufacturing to China with his most favored trade nation decree. The Clinton's were broke when they left the white house but quickly became filthy rich. I wonder what their source of income was? Well, not really. Then NAFTA came along. Trump set about righting this mess but he made mean tweets that pissed all the snowflakes off and he went away with the help of just found ballots and sleezy slo jo immediately reversed everything he had done the day he took office.

My personal take is this country is finished. It will take a few more years but then we will just be another third world dictator ship. No one, NO ONE, will come to our aid and we collectively are too stupid to see what is happening.

We bought new furniture over a span of time several years ago from the one local store we had and it was USA made. The store is closed now as the couple that owned it retired. When is the last time you even saw an ad for Lane furniture? I can't remember when. Just another American company put out of business by most favored cheap junk.

Layoffs and shut downs just before Christmas are nothing new. In fact it seems the favored time of year for big business to do this.

Agreed.  There is no "conspiracy" here. The company obviously was going broke, or is broke.  Emails to employees was likely "self preservation" with todays propensity to rob, burn, and  murder.
I also feel this country is finished as a Republic, and it once again for slightly different reasons is divided. The government once again, is trying to punish the southern states, and once again trying to push us into rebellion.

Ross Perot warned us about the giant sucking sound of the "free trade" agreements.  Furniture, shoes, clothing, all which was once made in America is gone.  Providing jobs for low skilled labor with health care benefits.  About 20% of Americans work for the Federal government, state and local governments, including military, teachers, postal workers, etc.  Probably another 10% are contractors for the government.

American companies are in trouble
and dying because of the "investment
groups " and corporations that buy
up businesses, toss the experienced
management and workers out, and
try to run the business like McDonalds.
I've had several managers over me
that didn't know the first thing about
the business we were in. A real
manager can do any job in the place
from scrubbing the toilet on up.
They might have succeeded if they
would stay in their office and let the
experienced workers run the show
and not try to implement the things
they learned when they were getting
their business degree.

there doing it to the north too dee. steel mills closing because of cheap imported steel. Car manufactures barely hanging on because they made it so easy for companies like bmw and toyota to set up factorys here and pay virtually no tax. The mid section of the country our grain and corn belts? Slam the door on fossil fuels so its twice as expensive to run there equiptment and buy fertilizer and honestly that one effects every part of this country because theres farms in every state. TM7  mentioned wood. I live in an area that wood is only second to iron ore mining and lately is probably even bigger. But its taken a hit too. Price of fuel for cutting and transportation has gone through the roof. I know two local loggers that last summer threw in the towel because they were loosing money.. When i was just out of school anyone that could spell there name could get a good paying job in the mines. We had 4 of them up here. Now theres one and its down to about half the staff it had in the 70s. Only thing growing up here is the welfare rolls.

The divisions arent north and south in this looming conflict. Its democracy vs socialism and theres some of each of those in every town in every state in this country. What we have is a goverment that would be kings. Half the country following them like blind sheep and the other half ready to rebel. Find your real enemy because the liberals would just love a north vs south fight so they can just sit back and enjoy the spoils. So that the blame for all of this goes to the states not where it really lies in the federal government. They know that if half the people in half the states (and thats all youd have if that because you arent even going to get most of the conservatives to actually risk there lives) sure can stand up to the government when they cant even convince there neighbors to join. Texas is a great state. Out of all the states id bet you would get the highest percentage of people willing to take up arms but at best your looking at single digit percentages of the population of your state. The rest will scream and shout till bullets fly then all you will see is there ass RUNNING away. Id bet biden would love it. He could send in the national guard and with one of his illegal strokes of the pen send in the army too. Youd be under martial law within two days. Nope with the civil war you had people divided by geography. You had a line in the sand. Today it would be about impossible even if every person in every state that was actually willing to fight for what they believe to take over crap. There are plans in place for scenarios like that. Its what emboldens those leftists in power. They know we cant do crap to stop it and the only recourse we have is our vote. Heck i wouldnt doubt if yours and my names arent on some list of houses to hit first if shtf. Time to put that silly north vs south crap to bed and concentrate on your real enemy's and to see a few all you have to do is look out your living room window. Or drive to the grocery store.

Went to a house auction and found myself bidding against 1 guy that looked like he was high on meth, this house is being flipped for 80k above where I stopped bidding. Only satisfaction I have is in knowing the co. He was bidding for had to pay 40k more for the property due to me. This post applies to Rangers “investment groups” mention which I believe this vermin was representing.

If you are broke you are broke. Can't buy materials, can't pay the help despite what some act says. Only recourse is to shut the doors. No conspiracy, just driven out of business by cheap junk foreign imports. Just one more company that got sucked down from our politicians greed. Fair trade my happy ass. We aren't supposed to charge import taxes but the rest of the world can charge them on our goods. How is that fair? It's not. It's just more giving our country away to the rest of the world.

I don't buy the fact that the closing is due to furniture coming from China. I know someone that works for a large Levin furniture store. Less than a year ago furniture orders were back ordered 6 months. So there was a large demand for furniture, but they could get it fast enough to supply demand.

OAS, in November of 2017 "United Furniture Industries" bought "Lane Furniture". United already had 3400 employees, so I suspect the closing was a strategic move in a down turned market that was made at the end of this physical year, likely to merge with other furniture manufacturing facilities owned by "United Furniture Industries"
Lane Furniture was previously owned by "Heritage Home Group" and they made the sale to United.
Not much of a mystery, or a conspiracy, but more of a lack of research.

"United Furniture Industries" reorganization and plant closures in future. The announcement was made in July of this year due to a "DRASTIC DECREASE" in consumer demand. No great mystery, or conspiracy. Just business.

But the Lane closure blindsided everyone. Then there's the Warn Act violation.

Btw, nobody said anything about conspiracy this and that except you. Just discussing some of the points of this very abrupt business failing, as often done in business classes.....looking at what went wrong.

Notice I furnished websites explaining the buyouts, and announcing future closings of manufacturing plants. None of which were difficult to research, and none of which were "secretive".
TM is resentful of an "actual explanation", and is trying to play his "sensationalism attempt" at making it to be "darkly ominous" down by making me out to be the bad guy.

yup dee its the men in black! ;D  A government plot to make it so the only place you can sit is on your porch with a quart of colt 45. Hes not interested in facts. Just the opposite. He spends ever waking minute of his life trying twist anything factual into a conspiracy. been that way since the first day he was here. He came to an outdoors forum and id about bet he hasnt posted 3 times about guns or hunting or anything outdoors related since the day he was here. Just stirring crap and telling lies. Sad thing is if someone new came here or some government agency was watching this forum theyd see his nut case ass and think we were all loony like him. Youd think hed spend his time on forums where people share his opinions but id about bet he just cant a group short of the hotel california that even wants him.

Sorry Dee, but when I post an item I usually include some food for thought to generate interest in the topic....often with a touch of humor.
Apparently, as self-appointed thought police, you don't approve.  Immediately you go hypercritical and charge the usual tired conspiracy crapola. My thoughts on that are, "I don't give a damn or care".
(Be warned, hypercritical argumentative fixations are indication/symptom of impending senility.)
.
Now from your Furniture News link:

The company said that affected employees will be guided through the transition with information about outplacement assistance and other support services including the continuation of unemployment and insurance benefits.

Well, this didn't happen if you comprehend the email sent to employees. In the end none of the stuff in your link occurred..... management just abruptly closed up shop. I guess they saw it was a good time to liquidate, but wonder what their decision is based on; and if we'll see more of these closures. I take it you don't realize the furniture industry is considered a signpost harbinger of our economy health.
.

I think its pretty nifty that your quoting from the links I posted, and that your tryin to downplay your doomsday scenarios.

I think it's sad Dee, you can no longer connect dots or follow trends or hypothesize in thought experiments.. Yeah, you're link said what usually happens in business reorganization, but it didn't happen. Now 2700 employees can look forward to a rocky Christmas _ _ not that that matters to you.

Nope, that's your specialty Torquemada.
I'm just trying to discuss the topic, but pre-senile curmudgeons poison the thought experiment and open their endless Inquisition.

I never thought about a "conspiracy theory" being "a thought experiment". Hmmmm, all this time I just considered it bullshlt.

Certainly a thought experiment is not in the realm of your experience, a misunderstood different concept for you.  You need to get out and around more, before it's too late.

And your shadow
the UPer Torquemada.....,forgetaboutit....not a hope in he!! for that train wreck to ever escape his cretinous hate filled self. Pity those around that deviant simp.,..he certainly shouldn't be around firearms with his uncontrolled anger and hate issues.

As far as the furniture industry goes, we will just have to see if the Lane example indicates further decline in the American economy. Europe's economy is certainly looking brittle.
.

Well, the bottom line on this is, I don't need any more furniture anyway, and your "experiment in thought" was comically entertaining.
I guess I probably should get out more, but I get more solid reality from feeding cows, and more sense out of a good horse.

I don't need or want any furniture.
But I feel for those employees cut loose at Christmas.
.

You "feel" for those 2700 people cut loose at Christmas, but you support Pootins' slaughter of THOUSANDS of civilian men, women, children, and the elderly in the Ukraine. Not to mention those left homeless, starving, and loss of families. That is really messed up.

I think you're the one that needs that "therapy horse".
