District Attorney Christina Mitchell speaks at a press conference at Uvalde High School in May. On Thursday, the city of Uvalde sued Mitchell, accusing her of withholding information needed for an internal affairs investigation related to the Robb Elementary shooting.

The city of Uvalde is suing the local district attorney, accusing her of withholding information an independent investigator needs to conduct an internal affairs investigation of the police response to the Robb Elementary School shooting.

City officials hired Jesse Prado of JPPI Investigations LLC to conduct the internal affairs inquiry. The suit filed Thursday names Christina Mitchell, Uvalde County district attorney for the 38th Judicial District, as the lone defendant. It seeks a judge to compel Mitchell to hand over all relevant law enforcement investigative records and materials from all law enforcement agencies.

Mitchell did not immediately respond Thursday to an email seeking comment.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — At least 79 officers have left the Texas Department of Public Safety since the deadly Robb Elementary School shooting on May 24 in Uvalde, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, or TCOLE.

Among them were the top two highest-ranking leaders of the Texas Rangers.

Those officers were Chief Chance Collins and his second in command Assistant Chief Bryan Burzynski.

The timing of their retirements prompted KXAN to ask whether the Uvalde school shooting and DPS’ involvement directly influenced their decisions.

KXAN attempted to contacted both officers multiple times via email, phone and social media to learn more about why they decided to retire. KXAN has not received a response from Collins, however, Burzynski reached out to KXAN after publishing this story.

Burzynski told KXAN he had been planning to retire in 2022 since becoming assistant chief in 2019. Prior to the Robb Elementary school shooting, Burzynski said he considered waiting until 2024 to retire.

“Uvalde was an important factor for why I retired now,” said Burzynski.

While KXAN has not confirmed the reasons Collins’ retired, a timeline of events and records of DPS emails reveal new insight into the circumstances surrounding Collins’ retirement and how some DPS officers feel about the culture and environment within the agency.

TIMELINE: What’s happened since the school shooting

According to email records, Burzynski submitted his retirement paperwork to DPS in June, less than three weeks after the Robb Elementary School shooting.

In July, DPS created an internal committee to review the actions of each of the 91 DPS officers who responded to the Robb Elementary School shooting.

I wonder if any of the 79 DPS officers that have quit were actually at the Uvalde school shooting?

Who knows how far investigative tentacles can or should reach. While I am not suggesting any of them are
guilty, an investigation can go far beyond the local scene.

Charlie Manson wasn't at the Sharon Tate house, Eichmann rarely visited the camps and Tojo didn't fight
     on Iwo jima either.

With all the video, and likely hundreds of statements, along with hours of radio traffic tape,  I'm thinking the city of Uvalde is pounding this dead horse looking for someone to specifically blame.
Take note that not one school board member, nor teachers have been scrutinized for failing to put any real security in place.

Shlt usually rolls down hill, but in this case, it rolls up.
