son in law got a bitching out yesterday
« on: December 07, 2022, 12:03:10 AM »
Im loading 556 and 9s. Was down to my last 300 bulk soft point 556 bullets and ran out of brass. I give him ammo on occasion and figured he had some brass. So i called him and asked him to drop it off. Well i about flipped over backwards. He brought back like 2k 556 brass and AT LEAST that many 9mms. He also had a bag with about 50 stripper clips. Now i store my long term ar ammo on stripper clips and dont even use that myself. Looked through my ammo cans and low and behold there was one only about a 1/4 full. I kind of read him the riot act. Told him he shot up at least 300 bucks worth of my 556 ammo and that doesnt even factor in the time to load 2k which is substantial. The 9s dont cost near as much because i cast my own bullets but its sure not free. Told him thats IT! No more. If you want ammo buy some primers and bullets and come pull the handle on that press yourself. bottom line is thats probably what pissed me off the most. I used to be able to stand at the press for 8 hours loading. Today its about 2 and I hurt for that. Loading 2k of 556 if i start with once fired crimped brass is about a 2 week project. Only thing that pissed me off more was that he was grabbing them when i wasnt home and not telling me.

at least that in 556 and that again in 9s. Aint his first ass chewing. He borrows my jeep all the time which i dont mind. Went to camp one day and took out my truck gun which is a 4.5 inch 9mm ar pistol. The bag has 10 30 round mags in it and all were loaded with jacketed bullets. There wasnt a single round in the bag. I jumped him about it and he said "oh i forgot to tell you" I asked him what the F id would have done if i actually needed that gun. Told him if he wanted to shoot it all he had to do was ask and i would have given him a couple hundred rounds of cast (not a couple thousand) and at that time 9mm jacketed bullets were about impossible to find. Kid does alot for me and its probably the only reason he wasnt laid out. But then i do alot for him too. I guess i figure im owed at least the respect of being asked. I just sent him an email and told him i have about 1000 rounds of brass left he can have. I already sized and deprimed it yesterday. Its twice fired so doesnt need decrimping. Told him to go to the store and buy a 1000 primers and id even prime it for him but then he will need to buy bullets and powder and finish loading it himself. Wana bet shooting gets put on the back shelf!!! Id bet when he sees primers at 10 bucks a pack hes going to find something else to pass his time doing.

I would have been seriously put out too but what I find strange is standing at a press to reload. I started reloading in the '60's and have never stood at a press. There ARE chairs and stools available to remove the need to stand.  ;D

Im to slow sitting behind a progressive and to get situated so that you can feed it and not knock yourself in the knee with the handle is about impossible. Only progressives that are handy sitting are the short throw square deals. I had 5 of them i lost in a fire an still try to talk myself into one in 9mm. I can crank out as much ammo on a square deal with its short throw as i can on a 650 with a case feeder.

I’ve been reloading about as long as you have, and I didn’t know anyone ever sat to reload. New one on me.

Office chairs are good for this. I’ve got one i would give you. Or I'm going to take it to the dump. I bought one of the mesh back chairs at staples, it’s much better. And not like sitting on a sofa with wheels.
It makes a great reloading chair. Comfortable , mobile, great adjustments to fit you.

Go check em out i have three of them. Reloading, computer, or just reading.

Sometimes I sit on a stool, sometimes
standing depending on what operation
I'm doing at the time. If I'm resizing larger
cases that need leverage, I'm standing.
I had a discussion about this the other day
with an acquaintance that's a handle jerker.
I've told him 2 1/2 gazillion times to pull
steadily on the press handle and not jerk,
but I don't know anything and all the yoofloob
"experts " know what's best. He almost
always ends up with rounds that are not
properly sized and the cases are no longer
concentric and bullets not seated in
alignment, etc.   Doesn't want to devote any
time to case preparation or inspection etc.

You can't tell anybody what they
don't want to hear
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Not once have I stood in the 10's (maybe 100's) of thousands of rounds I have reloaded over 30-years at the bench.  The top of the reloading table is perfectly chair height and I don't have the issues claimed of hitting knees or difficult feeding.  I sit when I cast too.  Creature comfort is not overrated in the repetitive world of reloading and casting.

I get plenty peeved at the audacity of taking without asking. I have been generous with the use of my property, giving a key and written permission to access to friends and guests alike.  Twice I have been walked up upon by individuals that did not have the common courtesy of contacting me in advance of their "walk about" on my land, as was told to and expected of them as the "price of admission".  I removed their key, changed the lock, revoked their access, and sent them home right then and right there without further consideration.  End of line for them.  Those that take a mile after being given an inch are rude, an accident waiting to happen, put me in danger, and to be ostracized.

well ive been doing this a LONG time and have sat loading ammo single stage and on real long sessions even tried to take a stool with a progressive. But after 50 or so rounds of awkwardness i have to grit my teeth and stand back up. Ive even thought of putting some hilti bolts in the floor and building some kind of back rest to lean against. But truthfully i dont load near what i used to. Maybe two long sessions like the one im on now in a year. Same thing with casting. I know some that cast sitting. I could never do it. Just slowed me down to much. Im not into the slow and smelling the roses crap. I want ammo so i can smell those flowers on the range or in the woods. I load and to shoot. I dont load for fun or shoot so i can load more. They are just necessary work i HAVE to do to be able to afford to shoot as much as i do. Bottom line is if someone offered me a lifetime of free ammo for all my guns id never load another shell. It was fun at first when i thought i was doing something loading 50 rounds of ammo. But somewhere along the line it became work. Its why i progressed from my rock chucker to progressive presses, dillion case trimmer and swadgers and wouldnt give you 10 cents for a 2 cav mold and wouldnt even try to work up a load with a bullet that only comes that way. They lyman sizer became a star which became pc coating. I am willing to pay good money to make this WORK easier. What i wont do is jobs that add little to nothing. things like cleaning or trueing  primer pockets, measuring every powder charge, trimming handgun brass or weight separating cast bullets. Ive loaded 556 and 308 ammo on a progressive press thats easily shot 3/4 inch 5 shot groups. Why should i worry about being more anal then that. If i shot my deer killing guns as much as the ars id be loading them progressive too and id bet that ammo would be just as accurate as what i make on my rockchucker or orange crush.

That's what it's all about!

If it is WORK you're doing it WRONG.

748, ramshot tac, benchmark and varget. Lately mostly varget. its an extruded powder but with small kernals that meter real well out of a powder measure. I love 4895 for it but it just doesnt meter good enough for a progressive.

I  use both ball & extruded . I like ball powder because it dispenses smooth and dont get that annoying crunching you get with extruded  . I have never used varget ,I'll  have to give that a try .
