gave away probably my favorite rifle
« on: December 08, 2022, 11:39:53 PM »
Its a remington 700 classic in 6mm from the original classics not the classic of the year bunch. Even had adjustable sights that have long ago dissapeared. It was my first bolt action deer rifle. I bought it off a buddy when i was in the service. It was 4 years old then and like new and it cost me a whopping 150 bucks. I shot MANY deer with it. Later when i was out of the service and started aquiring more and more bolt guns i gave it to my dad who hunted most of his life with open sighted 94 3030. He used it for about 10 years and when he retired from work i bought him his dream gun a browing blr 308. I got it back. Gave it to one of my nephews and he read the bs about them going off all on there own and was scared of the thing. I had well over a 1000 rounds and had never acted up. Then it went to my daughter who ended up with a bit of a drug problem and used it to club her husband (now x) over the head. Even bent the leupold scope which by the way after even telling the truth leupold replaced. Took it back from her and used it to shoot a few more deer crop damage shooting. At camp this year another nephew (that isnt a yuppy like the other) said he was looking for a 243 for his son. I called him yesterday and first thing he said was he got his buck last night. A nice 9 pointer that is his biggest yet. Told him to hop in the truck and drive it over here (45 miles) so i can see it. He said ill be there in an hour. When he got here we looked at his buck which was dandy and went back in the house and i gave him that gun. Told him it had a bit of sentimental value to me because dad had it too and i wanted it in the family. So for at least 40 or 50 more years that gun will be killing deer in the family. I did tell him ammo is about impossible to find and gave  him 200 rounds i had and told him he better buy every box he can at any price because when his kid gets old enough to pass it down nobody will probably even know what a 6mm rem is. I remember when i first got it buying corelocks for 7 bucks a box at walmart!! Now if you can even find it your looking at 50 bucks a box.

Great story. It is nice to see family tradition carried on in such a warm and caring way.

Years ago I bought a 700 ADL 6mm with a cheap wood stock. I don’t know what it was made of. It would change point of aim with the weather. I found a new Walnut ADL stock at a gun show ands it straightened out the problem. Used the original stock for kindling. It’s still a good shooter and still in the family along with everything needed to keep shooting for many years. Probably one of my favorites.

Yeah
Lots of "hunting " magazines and
videos and such rag on the 6 Remington
as a failure and inadequate, blah blah blah

When I was pretty young, the south Texas
people were using 22-250's and 6 Remingtons
and 222 magnums and 243's and such for
deer, and none of them ran off
A good many still use 22-250, but you seldom
hear any mention of 6 Remington or especially
222 magnum

Everybody wants the latest and greatest now
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

every one of those old press checkering no floor plate adls ive ever owned or shot were exceptionally accurate. probably more so then any other sporter weight 700 ever built. Id buy one today if i saw one in the used gun rack.

yup in the hands of me and everyone else in the family that shot deer with it we probably could have filled a dump truck. I dont recall anyone ever losing a deer shot with it. Is it anymore effective then a 243? probably not but i sure like it more.
